About
The memorial is dedicated to all who served in the 7th Armoured Division (The Desert Rats), the 4th Armoured Brigade (The Black Rats) and the 7th Armoured Brigade (The Green Jerboa), throughout history. In 1944 the men of 7th Armoured Division (The Desert Rats) arguably one of the most famous units in the British Army was based here and in the nearby countryside and towns, before they left to take part in the Normandy Campaign, landing late on 6 June 1944. These few months are the only time the Desert Rats were ever in the UK. The Memorial and main plaque inaugurated on the 23rd October 1998 by Field Marshal Lord Carver is located on the A1065 two miles north of Mundford, Norfolk, England. The additional plaque commemorating the Desert Rats of the 4th & 7th Armoured Brigades from 1945 to 2003 was added to the plinth and inaugurated during the Open Day on the 27th June 2004. A new museum has just been opened.

Great place, full of history and championed by a great man, full of patriotism and committed to ensuring the Rats are remembered.

Full of memorabilia and some great tales

Highest praise to Rod Scott, who has painstakingly built and maintained the museum.

Pleasant and informative trail
Aug 2019
Stopped here on impulse after driving past many times. Enjoyed following the trail which was well marked and lots of information boards. Easy walking through the forest and very peaceful. Well done to those who set this up in honour of the desert rats.

We were camping right next to this Memorial and its accompnaying historical trail around the Desert Rats Thetford Forest base so a perfect opportunity to revise our knowledge of the Desert Rats and their amazing contribution to our peace and security.

A touching symbolism to commemorate those in the desert rats and our case the 8th army who served with them.

A wonderful place to contemplate the horrors and losses of wars. Especially if you or yours were Desert Rats

I was one of the team of three former soldiers who put this memorial in its place after many many months of hard work and negotiations, I even went back to the Army in Germany to raise funds. Sadly, I am the only one of thee team left. The site is very well maintained and instructional for children. Thee is a small and meaningful museum as well as a marked walk through the forest.

Open Day 2018
Jun 2018 • Family
Hi, back again for another year of events at the memorial. Had a really brilliant day and it was great to see new displays and stalls, plus the museum open. The latter is a really great attraction that packs a great deal in. The display from the Army Signals unit was a great addition, as was the Ham Radio station that was talking to people everywhere.

We had a fantastic day out and the whole event was as ever very well organised.

So great to have you back with us again. Many thanks for your support over the years. The Amateur Radio Special Event Station was a new addition this year and we have heard good things about them and also the Royal Signals Squadron, too. We changed thinks around a bit this year, so that the bulk of the displays were close to the newly opened Museum. Thank you for taking time to provide the feedback which is most welcome and we are pleased to hear you all enjoyed the day.

Memorial Day June 2018
Jun 2018 • Family
We were using the Caravan Club site this weekend and there was a Desert Rats Memorial Open Day held just outside on Sunday (the day we were leaving) We couldn't stay to have a look round but there were lots of people of all ages and rank chatting and reminiscing in the sunshine which was lovely to see. So important to remember those that gave so much
