The Time Simply (Butter)flies By!
Jul 2021
This was my second visit in the last couple of years and it was lovely to once again be able to enjoy this rather British experience. As for the folk on here griping about the facilities you must decide if the operators of this enterprise are simply avaricious and are raking it in whilst caring little for their customers or are they in the main enthusiasts operating an enterprise that for much of the year is in little demand and needs to pay its way. I know what I think.

I did feel sympathy for passengers wishing to board at the Walsingham end who because of those passengers (like us!) who decided to stay onboard after boarding at Wells were unable to secure a seat and as a consequence were faced with a long wait - and no certainty of a seat even then - when the train returned. However, given the nature of the operation such situations are not in the hands of the staff who on the day of our visit absolutely did their best to keep everyone happy.

For us the summer highlight of the ride is always the countless butterflies that dance along the route beside you. It is the most uplifting of experiences and one we cannot recommend more highly.

Not a bad way to spend an hour or so…
May 2021 • Family
Went early (10am departure) to beat the queues. With COVID restrictions it’s best to plan ahead a little.

Not a bad experience overall. The staff were all very happy and pleasant.

There are a mixture of carriages (enclosed, open and partially covered).

The place is a little run down and could do with a wooden play area for small children to enjoy. There’s really just a static carriage and that’s about it. I’m not saying it needs tens of thousands of pounds spending but could do with generally being tidied up.

Still, it was £12.50 for two adults and a toddler including parking so quite good value if you enjoy a steam train.

Sweet little railway
Jun 2021
We had a lovely morning on the Wells and Walsingham Light Railway. Due to COVID restrictions the train only does a round trip to Wighton at the moment for £5.Our 18 month old daughter loved it, we sat in a semi covered carriage as it was sunny. On the way she was a bit fidgety as it is mainly bank to look at but on the way back she stuck her head out of the carriage and could see more and also the people in the other carriages, which she loved. The members of the team were really friendly and enthusiastic.
As we went on a Wednesday our train was a “non steam” train as the steam train driver usually has a Wednesday off so probably best not to go on that day if you would like a steam train.
There is also a parking charge of £2.50 but we used this too our advantage and walked into Wells, which is less than a mile away, after our train journey.
We also arrived at about 9:40 in the morning, I would definitely try and get on the 10am train because once we returned it was beginning to get busy.

A sweet little Steam Railway - give it a try
Jun 2021
Lovely little railway, with a tiny train pulled by a Garrett Steam Engine. It is obviously run on a shoestring by enthusiastic volunteers.

We visited on a sunny day and sat on some picnic benches with a takeaway tea, whilst we waited for our turn on the train (it sets off on the hour).

Payment was contactless and the place seems Covid safe. There seemed to be a little gift shop on site, and the Car Park was a large well mown field.

The train ride cost £5 each and Parking £2.50.

We enjoyed the ride and the fresh air, a lot of the trip was through a cutting, but this is a shorter trip than is normal, and it was still good fun. The engine driver was lovely - really smiley and happy in his job, and there was a nice friendly guard ushering us on and off the train.

The light railway does need some money spending on it, although they seem to be replacing sleepers on part of the track where the engine changes over, but it is worth a visit. They are doing a great job - there were so many smiling faces during the journey, and when we got off, passengers were asking to go again.

The toilets were clean and tidy

Interesting little railway.
Jun 2021
We visited as we had given up looking for a parking space in Wells on a hot Sunday afternoon. There was plenty of space at the Light Railway so we parked up and purchased some tickets for a run up to Wighton and back. The facilities at Wells are distinctly lacking with only some picnic benches to sit on in the blazing sun. It feels like they could probably do a lot better with visitor facilities at this site which as far as I know is their main station on the line. Whilst I appreciate COVID may have reduced options for them, it was certainly not clear that there was anywhere such as a gift shop or cafe for arriving visitors that had been closed due to COVID. It feels like they are missing a trick somewhat and they would be well placed to offer some more substantial visitor facilities at this site when funding allows.

The trip on the train was very enjoyable and the small steam locomotives well kept. It filled up an hour or so of our day and was an interesting little trip.

The grandchildren loved it
Jun 2021
We went with our son, daughter in law and grandchildren, 8 and 4. On this occasion the train did not travel to Walsingham. The grandchildren loved it, and we thought it was great fun. A gentle ride through lovely countryside pulled by real, but very small, steam engine.

Delightful!

Completely charming tiny (but perfectly real) steam railway through very pretty Norfolk countryside. Only running Wells-Wighton at time of writing (June 2021); hope they reopen to Walsingham soon!

Disappointing.

I was a bit perturbed when I pulled into the car park, to see some heavy machine guns pointing at us. An even bigger threat was a large coach. We didn't get any welcome, either buying the tickets or boarding the train. Whilst the trains have a certain charm, the carriages fall well short of a modicum of passenger comfort. Unless you are fortunate enough to get a seat at either end of the carriage, the remaining seats do not have any back rests and offer no support. This makes for an uncomfortable ride.

The present journey, whilst being reasonably priced, is only a short 30 minute jaunt up and down the line and for the most part, there is very little to see. It may improve if the whole line to Walsingham was open but there would still be the issue of comfort. It didn't help being in an open carriage on the coldest day of the week. It is a shame because it could be so much better but unfortunately, this time, it didn't cut the mustard

Lovely little railway
Oct 2020 • Family
Lovely little railway, currently only running up the track and then reversing back but still a decent length and nice views of the surrounding countryside. Fun decorations for Halloween too. It’s not a big flashy attraction but it’s very sweet and nice to visit whilst in Wells. You can park and leave the car in the field next to the station then it’s just a short walk into Wells for the shops and cafes etc.

My 4th visit to this charming railway. Always get a warm welcome. Sadly this year no tea and cake. Thanks Covid not! Railway runs on the old trackbed of the Wells branch. The powerful logos take the stiff gradients in their stride. Always an enjoyable time had by all.
