- Nbkd2012Southwick, United Kingdom6 contributionsInteresting Day OutWe visited this railway as we thought it would be a fun day out for us as a family (2 adults and 1 x 11 month old). We arrived and it looked a bit run down, with barely any other visitors in the car park. We were a bit apprehensive but after travelling to get there we thought we would give it a go anyway. The staff were really friendly and lovely and gave us seats in the indoor carriages as it was drizzling with rain slightly. The train ride to walsingham was ok, not a huge amount to see at first (lots of hedgerow) but about halfway through it did open up to fields etc and we saw some chickens and hares. We got off at walsingham and had a look around - very little there and only 1 cafe and a farm shop open - everything else was closed. The cafe (Nortons Cafe & Bar) was lovely with a great selection of hot and cold food and cakes. We then got the train back and we were going to walk down into wells but the weather turned on us unfortunately. We still enjoyed the day out but felt there needs to be a bit of TLC to make the place a bit more inviting to visitors. Also there is a playground advertised on the website but unfortunately we didn’t see that at all, and that was a shame as our son would have enjoyed that.Visited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 March 2023
- Vicky F10 contributionsAn enjoyable rideVisited at the start of the Easter holidays. Like others have said, looking a little tired and in need of a lick of paint. The ride was a good length and we enjoyed a walk around Walsingham opting to miss a train to visit some of the religious sites there. The staff (volunteers?) were friendly and it made for a good morning out. However, a few things grated. Our son was offered the Easter trail which we did and enjoyed spotting the eggs along the way. but when we got back to Wells, no one knew the answers so we couldn’t check them and despite saying so on the trail sheet, the “treat” was not available as we were told it’s only for the Easter weekend. Much disappointment and upset this caused. Also, £2,50 to park in an unmade-up field. I understand the charge for those walking to Wells but to charge actual visitors seems a bit much. Despite this, it was enjoyable.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 April 2023
- LarryEelesRoyston, United Kingdom64 contributionsLovely little ride on the trainWe got to Wells station exactly on 12.45 when the train should have left. They held the train and let us on! Ride was longer than I expected at 30mins each way. Kids loved the eggs spotting along the way. Volunteer run, and you can see the passion. Great little find.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 April 2023
- TESEly, United Kingdom44 contributionsGreat family adventure!Excellent fun for both us and the children. Delightful to have had a chance to chat with the driver and other staff who showed the engine to ours boys. Would thoroughly recommend a little jaunt either way! Thank you to the team at Wells-Walsingham railway!Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 August 2023
- Welltravelled56107 contributionsNeeds lots more organisationThe train itself is delightful, although the seats are uncomfortable having no backs, unless at the ends. However, the whole process of ticketing is woefully inadequate. There is no guarantee of a return journey even though you have paid for just that. Why not move it all online and have people book their seats? Alternatively do the physical ticketing at Wells where there are at least facilities, of which there are none at Walsingham. Just scraped on to the return train, very stressful experience. Also note there are no real views, the major part of the journey taking place in a deep cutting. All in all, a disappointing experience.Visited August 2023Written 25 August 2023
- Just our Opinion …….Milton Keynes, United Kingdom282 contributionsDisappointingFelt extremely underwhelmed after our return journey from Wells to Walsington. No organisation at all on arrival; everyone in a line to board only to be told return travellers take priority then had to scramble under a handrail to enter a different entrance to signposted. Nothing to see on the majority of the journey just hedges and extremely uncomfortable unless you’re lucky enough to get a seat at the back of the carriage which has padding. Would recommend being able to book online as would imagine in high season people have to be turned away. The whole area needs to be tidied up to look more appealing to visitors. Currently not worth the £21 return journey for 2 adults.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 August 2023

The narrow gauge railway travels through beautiful farmland to the historic village of Walsingham. - SuffolkmawtherIpswich, United Kingdom46 contributionsWe are glad we did it!As lovers of steam trains we always like to find ones we have not been on. This one was o.k. but if you are travelling from Walsingham to Wells do be very aware that the station is a good walk from Wells. There is a bus stop just outside the station but with no timetable, so no idea of how long a wait it might be. In the end we opted to get the same train back and then drove to Wells and explored the coast that way.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 September 2023

- Jess J1 contributionDelightful day outWe went on the WWLR on a Saturday morning and it was an honestly delightful trip, we saw it last minute and turned up and was able to get straight on the train. It was very affordable, sweet trip to walshingham - neither me or my partner are the religious type but took the time to explore walshinham for a few hours before coming back on the WWLR, it was just as lovely as the trip there. Staff were friendly and answered questions, it was well run and on time. Better then most British rail services these days!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 September 2023

We drove up from Cantley to take a ride on the Wells and Walsingham Light Railway. Prices are reasonably for two 30 minute rides and our 3 dogs travelled free which is a bonus. Looks like they have started preparing for some Halloween spooky rides later this month. Well worth visiting, we even saw a Tawny owl sitting on a post literally a few feet from the track, wish I could have taken a photo of it

We have been meaning to have a ride on this railway for years and today we finally made it. After great expectations it was a real anticlimax. The entrance is across rough grass and not very good for those with less mobility. The ticket process is chaotic and a mad scramble rather than an orderly queue. We were hauled by a diesel which, quite frankly, is not fit for purpose. It was belching out toxic fumes and obviously needs someone with technical know how to set it up properly. By the time we got back to Wells I had needed to use my Asthma inhaler NINE TIMES and the daily dosage is supposed to be a maximum of four. Even after getting back home my breathing is not as it should be and I may yet have to get medical attention. About fifty percent of the journeys scenery consists of chugging along between high hedgerows with little to see apart from vegetation and millions of ripe blackberries. A field of sunflowers and a few derelict bridges does, however, make for a little respite. We have been on many railways of all types and gauges and this is is the worst ever we have been on. I am also very surprised that the Health and Safety people allow the coaches to run with no safety gate / bar / chain on the open carriages along one side. Unless one sits at either end of a coach there are no back rests on the seats and this makes for an uncomfortable journey with backache at the end of it.

Felt extremely underwhelmed after our

A peaceful 30 min potter through the countryside in a little steam-hauled light railway train. Delightful - we went from Walsingham to Wells and back again as we also went for a walk around Walsingham on our return.

Hi where abouts in Walsingham does the train stop? I would like to take my mum into the Shrine and wondered if we would have time to do this before return journey. With thanks

It stops just near the farm shop and opposite the road to the Slipper chapel. You could do it if you caught a later train back, not enough time in the 15 mins it takes to arrive, change and set off again.

Wisbech to the railway at Wells-Next-The-Sea is 1 hour 23 minutes. Also allow 15 minutes for the Hardwick roundabout at King's Lynn which can be a nightmare in summer.
