About
Come and visit our fascinating local museum located in the seaside town of North Berwick. We’re run entirely by enthusiastic volunteers and our aim is to enable locals and visitors to explore the culture and heritage of the coastal communities that make up East Lothian’s North Berwick coastal ward – North Berwick, Dirleton, Gullane, Aberlady and Whitekirk plus the smaller inland hamlets. It’s free to enter (donations appreciated), you’ll get a warm friendly welcome and there’s lots to discover for all ages.

    A great local museum
A friendly and welcoming museum in the centre of the town above the library. It gives an excellent insight into what life was like in East Lothian in the past, as well as what it is like to live there today. The displays were very wide ranging and informative throughout.

    Hidden gem!
Went to the museum after being at the library below. It’s been newly changed around and loads of stuff added to it. I took my two children (10 and 8) and they loved it. The staff were really engaging with them and they were kept busy doing the quiz, postcard colouring, and finding the Lego figures hidden in the museum (prizes for getting the quiz right!) which meant I was able to actually look round the museum properly. Loved the miniature shops exhibition, the Robert Louis Stevenson and the witches of NB! Well done to all the volunteers, it’s a great museum!
Glad to hear you and the children enjoyed the new 2024 season exhibits. Hope to welcome you back again. We're a great school summer holidays resource!

    Enjoyable family experience
When mentioning visiting a museum to the kids (13&8) there is a sigh, not another. But this museum was great. The volunteers had activities for the kids to do which gave us grownups some time to look around the museum. Our smallest child enjoyed dressing up in pirate outfits and playing in the boat as well as dressing up as a Victorian school child where she sat at a Victorian deck pretending to play schools. Definitely worth a visit, the volunteer staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable.
Delighted to hear you had such a positive experience at the museum and that your kids enjoyed it. Hopefully no sighs in future! I'll pass your praise on to our volunteer, front of house staff.

Hidden gem in the heart of North Berwick!
What a brilliant and interactive experience! We told ourselves it won’t even take 30mins to walk through what looks like a tiny museum. We expected dingy, musty rooms with lots of reading. Upon arrival we were welcome warmly and enthusiastically by Anne-Marie, we were given age appropriate quizes to complete and a brief explanation of what the museum offered. The volunteers were on hand to answer any questions we had and we left with postcards to colour in and send off! We ended up spending an exciting and blissful 2hrs in the museum with our 5 children! We will definitely return!
Good to hear our local museum provided a positive surprise, contrary to your expectations. We'll look forward to welcoming you all back.

    Excellent local museum
Excellent local museum, located in the town's library, situated on the 1st floor, giving a very interesting display of the town and surrounding area's history through the years. There were plenty of different types of display from information boards to film clips to physical artefacts, some of which you can touch and feel. In addition, there were various challenges and activities specifically designed for children. Overall, a well presented town heritage, suitable for all ages. Free parking available. Well worth a visit.
Thanks GoingGuide. Glad to hear you enjoyed your visit.

What an amazing place! So informative and interesting on so many aspects of North Berwick and the surrounding area. The volunteer staff were so friendly and told us lots of fascinating facts . Well worth a visit - can easily spend an hour here. One of the best smaller museums we’ve visited- no admission charge but certainly deserved a donation- which the volunteers really appreciated.

This is one of the best local museums I have ever visited. It is free and run by a team of very enthusiastic and friendly volunteers who are very proud of the museum and keen to help each visitor - the welcome each person personally when they come in. There is a fantastic range of displays covering a number of towns along the Berwick coast including medieval history, pilgrimages, wildlife and natural history - including Bass Rock - and transport. The displays were so good I I read just about every word and decided to go back for a second visit. Lovely range of historic photographs and maps. A great experience and I'll be sure to go again next time I visit!

We were greeted warmly by the friendly volunteers. The museum is excellent and has well written, colourful information posters to go with each exhibit. So many topics are covered and the information given is interesting while concise for each topic. Great things to interest kids including postcards they can colour in. Really interesting and enjoyable, would recommend a visit.

A really nice museum. The volunteer guides were very knowledgeable and friendly, and the exhibits were most interesting. I found particularly interesting the exhibits about Robert Louis Stevenson's association with North Berwick. Not to be missed if you are in North Berwick.

Very friendly and helpful volunteers when we visited earlier today. First time leaving a review as we had a good time in the exhibition and would recommend to anyone visiting North Berwick. Fun family activities for younger visitors such as the lego quest (which was a bit tricky even for us adults)!

Wonderful local museum. There were lots of exhibits describing many different aspects of Berwick history. The guides were friendly, knowledgeable and happy to spend time with us and very patient. The trails around the museum, whilst designed for children, were fun - even for four adults - there was plenty for any age group. Struck just the right balance between being too dry and detailed and being 'dumbed down' to the point where they didn't really tell you anything. I particularly enjoyed dressing up as a pirate.
I would recommend this to all ages - a good few hours of entertainment.

Delightful museum, carefully and interestingly laid out with lots of great local information and beyond. People places geology history.
Truly something to suit every age and taste.
Especially good for children with lots to see and do to keep their interest.
As a newcomer to visiting the museum it is fascinating and the volunteers are just the best and many with a wealth of information of North Berwick, East Lothian and historical facts to entertain.
