- David MWest Mersea, United Kingdom33 contributionsGreat experienceLoved all of it, the entrance fee is really good especially that under 16s go free. The exhibits are really varied and interesting. The volunteers there are lovely and very attentive. Now the cafe, what lovely people who actually know how to make a cup of tea, and the scones are amazing. As you may guess, I highly recommend visiting here.Visited February 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 14 February 2023
- KenGy1 contributionSparkling Gem of a MuseumAfter over two hours there I had time only for the Mayflower and neighboring displays. Recommend you plan lots of time as there was much much more to experience. All the exhibits were well displayed and chock-full of interesting items and information. The All-Volunteer Staff are genuinely welcoming and enthusiastic. Cafe was superb. I saw many local people returning just for the refreshments.Visited February 2023Travelled soloWritten 28 February 2023
- Simon L4 contributionsLocal museum packed with historyVisited with my 9 y/o son today. Lots of interesting displays, staff provided a nice map of the museum and a questionnaire he enjoyed. Packed full of memorabilia and history this is a really lovely museum of local history. Friendly staff, kids get in free which is always appreciated and a nice little tea room attached as well. Very good!Visited April 2023Written 1 April 2023

- Keith JNorth Wales, United Kingdom120 contributionsA small museum with a reasonable admission fee of £3.50 and a lovely tea room. This is a small museum with a reasonable admission fee of £3.50. The photograph of the outside of the building on their website shows two stories, but the museum is limited to the ground floor. There are interesting displays about Harwich during war time, the east coast storm surge, maritime Harwich, and an entertaining section on the Hi-de-Hi television programme. There is also information about local buildings such as cinemas, as might be expected in a local museum. What the museum is missing is more interactive displays, particularly for children. A dressing up station would be a cheap option to entertain children and provide photographic opportunities. There is an evidently popular café in the building, with some outside seating, in which I enjoyed a mug of tea with a warm chocolate brownie and "the works", and my wife a cream tea.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 June 2023

The volunteers are friendly & have extensive knowledge of Harwich which they are willing to share with you. I suggest finishing with a cream tea in the gift shop as it's all homemade & such a treat.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 September 2023

We have visited the museum cafe many times and have always enjoyed our food.
A cream tea was thoroughly enjoyed today.
Staff who are largely volunteers are always pleasant and helpful.

This relatively small museum and coffee shop punches above its weight.
The exhibits are well presented with succinct explanations, covering many aspects of Harwich and the local area.
A reading room/study area, together with a small lecture theatre were unexpected but welcome finds and compliment the area given to displaying the many and varied exhibits.
For a small local museum a huge amount of thought has been expended on what to display and how to display it, resulting in an absorbing collection of memorabilia that should please most people.
The website gives details of an excellent and varied programme of talks, making the purchase of an annual ticket very good value.
Staffed entirely by volunteers the Harwich Museum should be 'not to be missed' by visitors and locals alike.
There really is something here for nearly all people exploring Harwich and its rich history.

Such a warm/helpful welcome - got instructions/map for the walking tour and had a quick recce around the maritime, Hi de Hi and other local history.
And conveniently next to the tall lighthouse.

I spent a very happy half day in this historical museum, astonished by the richness of its exhibits and the generosity of its volunteer staff -- not to mention the excellent cream teas. I am particularly grateful for the expert research help from museum curator David Whittle, who is a national treasure.
