About
The Old Prison, formerly a House of Correction, is a fascinating 18th Century Grade II* listed building in the Cotswold market town of Northleach. Today it serves as a popular and rather unique Kitchen & Café serving artisan coffees, brunch classics, homemade cakes, lunchtime specials and afternoon teas, all made with locally sourced ingredients. Complementary access is available to the original Prison Cells and Court Room and the fully enclosed garden with outdoor seating houses the Lloyd-Baker wagon collection.

- Gidders3Seal, United Kingdom104 contributionsOdd placeHave driven past here many times and finally decided to stop for lunch. Menu is ok, but strange atmosphere. Staff all standing round yet you have to order at the counter and then collect all your food from the hot pass when it’s ready and your buzzer goes off. The kitchen extract was not switched on so it was hugely smoky and stale oil smell. Food was actually quite good, but it needs some enthusiasm and passion putting in to improve it. Random guy wandering round in a beanie hat clearing tables… still not entirely sure if he actually works there.Thank you for visiting us and sharing your feedback. We're glad you enjoyed the food and apologise for the atmosphere and service not meeting your expectations. We've addressed the kitchen extraction issue and are reviewing our service approach for better clarity and hospitality. Your insight is invaluable to us, and we hope to welcome you back for a more enjoyable experience.Written 2 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 October 2023
- philip w200 contributionsThe old prison northleach December 2023Hi we went there at lunchtime and have been here many times previously before the pandemic. Upon arrival the staff were not that friendly and were on their phones only the chef engaged with us. We had some lunch which ws good but the service is non existent.all the time the staff are on their phones or eating whilst behind the counter. The place was less than a third occupied. Would we return, probably not I would try another place.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 10 December 2023

Stand with visitor leaflets and history board on the wall about the prison. Access to the old court and cells from the cafe. Agricultural exhibition of old farm machinery outside.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 March 2024
- Libby W137 contributionsOverpriced for what was presentedDisappointed overall by an underwhelming experience. The girl at the counter struggled mournfully with the ordering process, it was only the interjection of another member of staff explaining it was a new menu and apologising that kept me there. I was then presented with a buzzer which calls you back to the counter when your order is ready .not a system that appealed to me- does not create a relaxing atmosphere. The chicken sandwich (at £9) was club style but made with unpleasant sliced bread and the filling was minimal but tasty. I ended up removing the filling and eating it without tackling more of the bread. Coffee was rather weak too, I won't return.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 3 July 2024
- Bramble Hedge1 contributionGood mealMuch improved! We go here a lot as we enjoy rural drive down back lanes and they serve gluten free options! Very pleased this time to see they are doing jacket potatoes again! Bleepers are annoying but being disabled staff very willing to being food to our table. Only problem is that there is no longer any designated disabled parking! Otherwise I would give it 5 stars!Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 July 2024
- Sunshine825299287 contributionsA bit different. We had a breakfast here as 3 adults (and a dog) and it was nice, bit expensive but as tourist in the are we already notice prices are dearer in this parts. Food was pretty decent, I like the fact they were serving sourdough with full English. Walk around the prison was interesting. it's a unique dining experience. Staff were pleasant enough, we had no issues, they actually served us breakfast to the table which from other reviews I gather is not necessarily the norm.Thank you for your thoughtful review! We’re glad you enjoyed the breakfast and found the sourdough a nice touch. It’s great to hear that the unique dining experience and the surrounding area added to your visit. We appreciate your feedback on pricing and are happy to know the staff provided a pleasant experience. We hope you and your dog had a lovely time exploring and that we’ll have the pleasure of serving you again in the future!Written 10 September 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 10 August 2024
- Annette PUnited Kingdom6 contributionsVERY DISAPPOINTING - WON'T BE BACKDisappointing! First visit for us. Ordered two Farmhouse breakfasts and two Garden Farmhouse and coffees. The flat white coffees were only luke warm and the americanos had flecks of what looked like sour milk on the surface. Answer from staff on complaint was that they had changed supplier and maybe they should change back 😬 (not our problem). The breakfast looked good when presented - however the plates were not warm and the breakfast was also only luke warm. Poached eggs very watery, bacon dry, sausages stone cold. Had to ask for butter for toast as only one of the four breakfasts came up with butter. The breakfast was fairly expensive at £12 -£12.50 plus drinks. We don't object to higher prices if we have good food - unfortunately this was not the case. This place has such potential to be an amazing cafe, but the lack of customers should have been a warning. The staff were not at all interested in our concerns and never even gave eye contact when we left. First place we've been in a long time (and we go out every weekend for breakfast) where the staff do not say goodbye or acknowledge us on departure. 😞 Cannot see any reason to return to this place which is sad as we loved the setting of the place. Would be very surprised if this place gets repeat business - just relying on Cotswold tourists unfortunately!I’m truly sorry to hear about your disappointing experience. This is certainly not the standard we strive for, and I appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback. I apologise for the issues with the coffee and the breakfast; we are currently addressing these concerns with our team to ensure improvements are made. Your comments about the temperature of the food and the quality of the service are particularly concerning, and we will use your feedback to make necessary changes. Thank you for bringing these matters to our attention. We genuinely value your input and hope you might consider giving us another chance in the future to provide you with a much better experience.Written 10 September 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 11 August 2024
- Alison DWellington, New Zealand7 contributionsA gem of a find and well worth a visitA gem of a find. Great place for a stop off for coffee/food with the added bonus of a free tour of the old prison and a farming equipment exhibition. A real homage to the local community of bygone days. Highly recommend. If you have time, a visit to the nearby market town of Northleach is also recommended.Thank you for the wonderful review! - Amanda A1 contributionGreatThis was my second visit to The Old Prison and it did not disappoint. When we arrived, the cafe was very busy but we managed to find a table. The table was clean and there were plenty of napkins/cutlery. I had coffee (which was very good), and my children both had Oreo cake, which they reported was delicious. Staff were friendly and offered to bring my coffee and the cakes over to my table once we had ordered at the till. After visiting the cafe, we had a look round the prison cells and the court room, which we all enjoyed. There is also an interesting display of historic carts/farm vehicles outside. All in all, we really enjoyed our visit and will be back!Thank you for your wonderful review! We’re delighted to hear that your second visit was just as enjoyable as the first. It’s great to know that the coffee and Oreo cake were hits with you and your children. We’re also pleased that you enjoyed exploring the historic features and displays after your meal. Thank you for your kind words about our staff and the cleanliness of the cafe. - JS7015Roswell, Georgia276 contributionsCool venueWe were on our way to Cotswolds from Bath and stopped for a takeaway cup of coffee. The coffee was good as was the service but the venue is very cool. Wish we’d had more time to explore but it’s worth a stop, for certain. Apparently, it’s changing hands so hopefully the new owner will continue to promote and preserve this interesting artifact.Thank you for stopping by and for your lovely review! We're so glad you enjoyed the coffee and service, and that the venue caught your eye. Hopefully next time you’ll have more time to explore and soak in everything we have to offer. Well, where do I start? A couple of friends and I decided to pop into the Old Prison Cafe as we've never been before and heard great things about it. Upon arrival we are greeted straight away by the staff, all with smiles on their faces and given a menu and told we are free to sit anywhere which isn't taken.
We used a QR barcode with our phone camera which took us to a very easily accessible website where we could order our food and drinks from the phone which was very convenient.
Within 2 minutes of ordering the drinks they were delivered to our table by a very friendly member of staff who treated us with the utmost respect and we even had a little laugh. Around 5 minutes later, our food was served to us on the table which looked absolutely delicious (we had a bacon roll with an egg, sausage roll with an egg, and finally bacon scrambled eggs on sourdough).
We were extremely impressed by the taste of the locally sourced bacon and sausages and would recommend to just about anyone. It was absolutely delicious.
One of the people I was with followed that up with a slice of hummingbird cake and my word, it was amazing and a massive slice for only £3.50!!!!! We all had a taste and were impressed with the quality and delicious flavor.
As soon as we got up to check the Prison Cell's out and look around the site, the staff were instantly at work clearing and wiping our table. Within 30 seconds it was spotless, we couldn't believe our eyes about how efficient and quick working staff were.
The cells were very interesting to look at and overall a very cool experience. We will definitely be returning hopefully to check out the bar outside and the amazing food (which we saw) coming out of there. (Things like Burgers, Chicken dippers, fries).
Dog friendly as well, I must add. We saw many dogs loving the outside environment in the seating area in the prison garden and they looked like they were having just as much fun as we were.
If you have not been then I urge you to check this place out as it most definitely did not disappoint and we will be back soon.

With a choice of seating inside and out plus a good ordering procedure this feels a safe venue in these challenging times. Whilst the 50% Government discount scheme has ended you can still enjoy a bacon buttie and hot drink of your choice for £4.95 before mid day. The young staff are a delight and nothing is too much trouble. This is an ideal venue fo breakfasts, light lunches or snacks with the added attraction of Safe seeing the court room and cells. Well behaved dogs are allowed and there is parking in the forecourt. Highly recommend.

Popped In for a coffee and cake. Staff are really friendly and helpful. I requested a hot chocolate made with water only, it wasn’t a problem. Service was very prompt. Carrot cake was delicious as was the rocky road .
We looked around the old prison which was informative. There was a donation request of £2 each, which we were more than happy to donate. Very pleasant cafe with excellent staff.

Just visited here for breakfast and defeated by techno and lack of customer services! The idea is you find a table and scan the QR code and order and pay using ur phone. The first problem is the signal in the area is poor so you have to find a WiFi connection. Then actually finding what you want and inputting your credit card details (before you have eaten anything) is a faff and we could not tell if the order had been submitted or not so we left. We had been sat at the table some 15 minutes but no staff came over to see if we were struggling with technology, no sign on the table offering an alternative way to order. Some with no mobile phone (yes, there are still some people!) would be put off before even going in when reading the sign. We gave it a go but failed and obviously because staff don’t wait on tables (which are metres apart over a wide area) they don’t pass close enough to check on ‘oldies’ who might be struggling. If we had managed to order, I would have preferred to pay by contactless as we left as it’s very strange to pay for food over your phone messing with credit card details. I felt that our order could have been taken at the table in half the time we faffed about trying to get the technology to work.

Visited this place today, not for the first time.
This used to be a really good place with a good menu, if not slightly expensive.
I think that its changed hands now and is little more than the sandwich counter at Asda.
The "menu" consists of £5 sandwiches that are are pre made and packaged and going slightly stale with £2 cans of drink.
The staff are about 10 years old and have little interest in what they are doing. Today we were served by a girl who had a young lad about the same age flirting outrageously with with her and comically getting no-where.
The tables around us had food left on them that had a good array of flies on them.
This place represents a few things.
A place in the cotswolds can charge what it wants for anything and get away with it from passing footflow, a business run by someone that is clearly out of their depth and exactly how not to staff a cafe.
If you fancy a meal in Northleach, don't bother with this place.

If you want breakfast, brunch or just coffee somewhere different this is the place to go. Friendly staff, dogs very welcome, with a simple breakfast/brunch menu leading to fresh, well cooked food, plus excellent coffee makes the cafe alone well worth a visit. Add a great value breakfast roll and hot drink plus free, yes free, visit to the Countryside collection, the Old Court House and the cells makes a visit a must. Having tried the breakfast roll will certainly return for brunch.

Came here for lunch as it looks lovely from the outside.
Food is overpriced for what you get and the quality isn’t good either!
One sausage wasn’t cooked properly and one had been cooked & reheated.
Poached egg had shell in and wasn’t cooked properly.
‘Fresh’ cakes inside had wasps crawling over them. If I hadn’t gone in to look at the cakes this would have been served to me. Wasps carry bad bacteria so this has to be a healthy & safety issue.....
Bread with soup wasn’t edible. It was rock solid.
Such a shame as from outside the place looks lovely
Wouldn’t recommend and definitely won’t visit again

Arrived for lunch after visiting last year and was lovely. The lovely young girl seated us and told us someone would come take our order. After 15 mins my husband started trying to get the male waiters attention and he looked directly at him and proceeded to take an order from the people who had just arrived , after us. We walked out and no one noticed..!!!!!! Which says it all.

We were looking forward to trying the old prison upon its reopening however we're left extremely disappointed. Upon arrival with 2 elderly relatives and a newborn baby we sat outside. No one told us it was now counter service, so I went back in, collected menus and returned outside. Reading the menu it then said to ask what toasted sandwiches and sandwiches were available that day meaning another trip inside. A very limited menu especially for vegetarians. We placed our order and were given a buzzer to collect when food was ready. My elderly relative asked for a receipt, he was told they don't offer receipts which is bad. The buzzer went so i went to collect. Only 3 sandwiches and 4 drinks out of the 5 food orders and 5 drinks were ready. The waitress said I will collect your buzzer now I said well were missing items, she just said oh. I wasn't given a tray to take orders outside I had to ask for one. The buzzer went off again for the final orders 10 minutes later. By this time the first orders ready were cold. I stood in the queue waiting to be given my order when I over heard the chef say have you buzzed number one. She said no resulting in the buzzer going again when I was already waiting. I asked for the missing orders to be told to get it from the kitchen. Having to cut through the queue that had formed. Again no tray given. A customer had to help me get the food as I couldn't carry it all. Very disability unfriendly! I dropped my order in the floor before the customer waiting for his order could help me. Very very unorganised and a terrible system. Being local we know how busy it gets in the summer and if it was this bad on a quiet day I dread to think how they will cope on a busy summer day. I asked to speak to a manager and was told we don't have one in today were left to it. Just very unprofessional. My disabled relatives couldn't have got there own orders and we just weren't given any help. Not even a tray until I had to ask. Always try and support local but a very expensive, very terrible service today. Disappointed is an understatement!

Sometimes you read reviews of a place and think, well come on, it can't be that bad.
This place is, although it never used to be. Something has definitely changed in the way they recruit their staff perhaps or the way they are trained because when we went there we waited ages to be served and the coffee and cake we ordered was lukewarm and almost inedible.
Maybe this place is being run as some sort of social experiment in order to find out what a minimum level of service is required.
Avoid at all costs and join the campaign to reconvert this place back into a prison and use it to house the people who thought they could run this place as a cafe.

Yes! We love dogs at the Old Prison Cafe. They're allowed in the Cafe and the Courtyard so long as they're well trained and kept on a lead.
