Look, I know Covid has been hard on historic properties, but when you say your grounds are open and charge a fee to visit them, be honest and make it clear that this includes only an extremely small section of the property (the walled garden adjacent to the tea room). Those interested in walking within sight of the castle itself will be disappointed.

I think charging to see very little in the Winter gardens and glass houses a mistake.
Some good food in the gift shop to take home.

Very poor afternoon tea. 4 different dismally sandwiches in plain boring cheap white bread,
no savouries, cakes looked shop bought frozen. Staff not very welcoming or friendly either. Won't be back.

Had lunch booked at the Terrace Cafe…Absolute rip off. Food was basic but extremely over priced. For the child’s menu…. Came with some fancy salad and dressing…..really.
Coffee was of poor quality and couldn’t drink it.
I dont usually leave reviews, however for a light lunch for 4 plus an 18 month old child we could have had a night in a hotel with breakfast. Joke

Lovely grounds but the highlight is the Terrace Cafe. We booked afternoon tea for 4 during a getaway and it surpassed our expectations. Delicious cakes and plenty of tasty sandwiches. Friendly and helpful service. Would definitely return!

The house was worth a visit but the gardens were very disappointing. There were very few plants with labels and needed a really good tidy. Looked unkempt. Signage bad and to eat in the cafe was almost impossible unless you could eat fast. Maybe a warning that you need to book in advance for a rather overpriced meal could be an idea.

Beautiful surroundings, but a welcome to visitors would be great. During the week we’ve been holidaying here, we’ve tried three times to get some lunch in the Terrace Café. We’re fully booked sounds a little hollow when there are lots of free tables. Today we walked from Kelso centre, making for the castle café. But it was closed, and of course the Terrace café was ‘full’. No warning at the entrance, which would have been helpful! Won’t be going back.

Fantastic place to visit. Beautiful grounds and a wonderful visit inside the castle. The room guides were friendly and very knowledgeable… delightful to meet them.
The paintings, furniture, silverware etc are fabulous. Highly recommend a visit
