About
Winner of the Channel 4 Restoration of the Year, this site features 900 years of history including medieval castle walls and a Georgian house restored to its original glory. You can also stay in this great place with a mixture of serviced and self catering accommodation, 4* and 5* respectively. Our 1176 café and restaurant serves great lunches in a modern cantilevered building overlooking the river.

Recommended for charm, peace and quiet.
Perfect few days self catering in the Gardeners Cottage. The castle is small but full of character and charm with so many friendly smiling faces from staff who couldn't do enough to help us. So quiet and peaceful and just what we needed after a troubled few months. Looking forward to another visit.

    Lovely Place to stay
Booked one night stay at the Castles bed and breakfast accommodation as a break from travelling all the way home after having a week in North Wales found it online and booked a premium ensuite Heritage double room for £115 . On arrival had a code to enter the castle gates with our car , we were staying in the east wing of the castles accommodation, another key code entered us into the east wing not knowing what to expect we had to walk through the downstairs part of the wing with original slate flagstone floor and stairs lots of original features in the lounge area and utility area with a well equipped kitchen which we did not use . We opened our room door which was on the 1st floor and were pleasantly surprised, lovely clean smell , everything clean and tidy Local bottles of water and toffee waffles , in the bathroom locally made Myddfai beauty products , lovely soft towels .Old style sash windows with wooden shutters were a lovely feature , The furniture looked like old Welsh Oak with the Welsh 3 feathers on the handles once again nice feature , old style fireplace and cast radiator, plenty of power points , nice modern bathroom with a rainfall shower Breakfast was included which was in the 1174 restaurant on site which gave a choice of cereals, juices ,tea ,coffee , croissants, jams etc then a choice of hot food off the menu we went for the full Welsh breakfast which was delicious, staff were really pleasant and made sure we had and were happy with everything a great experience Afterwards we liked the place so much we booked another night stay online and we were able to keep the same room which was great For £115 it is a bargain great accommodation within an historic castle grounds , excellent food even the castle house is available to look around as with the castle grounds , gift shop on site and straight onto the main street in Cardigan on foot with an abundance of shops , places to eat and drink , Highly recommended will be staying here again

Amazing stay and much cheaper than you’d think
The rooms are comfortable and with modern things but without losing the character. The setting is amazing with the grounds and the river outside. The place is really amazing. The breakfast is fantastic. I really think this place is amazing value. I was surprised at the cost, it was the cheapest room I stayed in on this trip back to the uk and no where had its character.

    Great historical experience
I am from the area originally but growing up the castle was privately owned and not open to the public. I finally had the opportunity to visit and found its history fascinating and engaging. The Cegin 1176 was great too with helpful staff and stunning views across the River Teifi. And great value with the admission tickets letting us back in again within the year! Well worth a visit if you enjoy history
There is not much of the castle itself, but the house in the grounds is the real story. Well presented with lots of information, even if the full story of how it came into public ownership has been withheld. Excellent disabled access. The restaurant is fine, but we would have appreciated steak knives to cut our delicious bread roll sandwiches.

    Lovely stay in the Stables
Just home from a lovely 3 night stay in the castle. Accommodation was very clean and check in instructions were very clear. Breakfast was included and was of very good quality. Castle grounds are very well kept. Recommend for a place to stay in Cardigan.

Very disappointed, similar feelings to other contributors. Not a lot see and despite being so called dog friendly they charge £1 for the dog. Never ever had that happen before. If there had been somewhere else to go we would have turned away, and it’s not about the money,
You can’t take your dog into the cafe either so if it’s raining looks like you have to sit in the rain or go back to reception while you partner enters the house.
All in all disappointed

We had 2 really enjoyable visits to Cardigan. The first day we had lunch and then went down by the river and through the town. It was a lovely day and we really enjoyed our walk through the town.

We only knew of the car park behind the market to park centrally but the maximum time you could stay is 3 hours and this was not enough on our secong visit. We went for breakfast first and then to the castle. The lady in reception was lovely and we would have enjoyed the castle, had we had the time to look around properly. The volunteer gardener was really lovely, chatty and knowledgeable but we had to rush to see all the castle and grounds before our car park ticket ran out and it just wasn't worth going all the way back to the car park and then back to the castle. It was nothing to do with cost, just the inconvenience of not being able to pay for all day, when there is clearly enough to do and see in the town,

We visited Cardigan Castle as part of our week away, and we were so glad we did. You start off with an introductory video (the gazebo you're in has plenty of spacing between the chairs to accommodate social distancing) and then you have the freedom to explore the grounds. There's a huge garden which our dog enjoyed exploring (until the ride-on lawnmower came that is!) and we had loads of fun taking photos while sat on the Eisteddfod chair. The Manor House was really lovely and included a lot of exhibits from Cardigan's history, and the allotment was lovely to visit and I was surprised that they're still growing vegetables even with the coronavirus situation, so we could see a lot of different vegetables being grown. You can get some fantastic views from the castle walls and it made for some great photos. The entry price was very reasonable (I think it was £6 per adult and only £1 for our dog) which lets you revisit any time within a year. If we return to Cardigan we'll certainly come by again.

We went to Cardigan for the day and parked by the river, we spotted the castle straight away and after a while decided to go in, so glad we did it's lovely inside with a nice cafe.
It's only £7 per person.. its not huge but worth going to see.. for a couple of hours..
We had a hot drink and the staff were friendly at the cafe.
There's a house inside to walk around and it's set in very peaceful surroundings with beautiful gardens..
Would definitely recommend it.

Despite the fact we thought we couldn't find it - entrance is not obvious as you drive past - it was easy to get into once we knew where we were going. Entry fee is reasonable and there is a lot of history available about Cardigan and its surrounding area. There isn't actually much of the castle to see as such, a lot of walls and a few ancillary buildings. However, the House is a must see - it is beautifully restored with a lot of interest, and the two ladies on the top floor doing research are a mine of information!

We had been to Cardigan before but did not visit the castle. This time we popped in and we were glad we did. It is not the biggest castle we have ever visited but it was very interesting. It was not very busy at the time of the visit but when we did meet other visitors they were all very thoughtful when it cam to photographs and listening to the video guides. Some lovely views from the ramparts and the main house was very interesting.

My partner and I were excited to return today (16/08) to visit the castle and to enjoy coffee and cake at the restaurant. Unfortunately we were turned away as they were only serving customers who were purchasing hot meals. We looked around and there was several tables empty (inside and outside) Surely the restaurant would like to take money from paying guests like ourselves than having empty tables. If this was the case there should be a sign as you approach the restaurant. Not a good experience!

I remember going to Cardigan about 30+ years ago when the castle was derelict and the outer walls were propped up with beams to shore them up. It was a very sorry sight. However I was delighted to visit and to see what has been done with the castle since the renovation started. It is only small but the gardens are lovely , the kitchen garden has lots of lovely produce growing. The house has been renovated and although not fully restored to the period has lots of interesting information within it.

We didn't use the cafe although it looked inviting but we had a lovely time. Dogs are allowed in the grounds but not in the house.

Cardigan Castle offers a mix of self catering and rooms with breakfast accommodation that is delivered from within Castle House inside the castle walls. It is not a hotel and reception is provided within the castle entry shop between 11-4. Outside these hours entrance is effected in a convoluted manner via key safes and a secure on site car park. An expanatory video is sent prior to arrival. Rooms are accessed via a staircase and our room Y Cei/The Quay is a double room with compact walk in shower room and a small seating area and desk that offers a view of the river Teifi and the quayside walk. Restaurant 1176 can be entered from Castle House and a delicious breakfast is on offer cooked to order or Continental style. The. Castle grounds are well maintained and planted imaginatively with tender plants. The main courtyard was set up with a concert stage and light/sound set. We noted that Natalie Imbrulia performs in a fortnight! We made do with the sounds from the pub across the road and bathroom noises from the next room.

Outside yoy get a good view, I would say it's a castle but it's the remains. Cafe on site is delicious.
