About
Winner of the Channel 4 Restoration of the Year, this site features 900 years of history including medieval castle walls and a Georgian house restored to its original glory. You can also stay in this great place with a mixture of serviced and self catering accommodation, 4* and 5* respectively. Our 1176 café and restaurant serves great lunches in a modern cantilevered building overlooking the river.

- HenryhRuthin, United Kingdom117 contributionsCastle ComfortsCardigan Castle offers a mix of self catering and rooms with breakfast accommodation that is delivered from within Castle House inside the castle walls. It is not a hotel and reception is provided within the castle entry shop between 11-4. Outside these hours entrance is effected in a convoluted manner via key safes and a secure on site car park. An expanatory video is sent prior to arrival. Rooms are accessed via a staircase and our room Y Cei/The Quay is a double room with compact walk in shower room and a small seating area and desk that offers a view of the river Teifi and the quayside walk. Restaurant 1176 can be entered from Castle House and a delicious breakfast is on offer cooked to order or Continental style. The. Castle grounds are well maintained and planted imaginatively with tender plants. The main courtyard was set up with a concert stage and light/sound set. We noted that Natalie Imbrulia performs in a fortnight! We made do with the sounds from the pub across the road and bathroom noises from the next room.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 July 2023
- Amber665Birmingham, United Kingdom274 contributionsMainly just the castle wallsAccording to the locals we spoke to this was sadly falling apart and inaccessible about 10 years ago, but has now been repaired and the inside reclaimed. Mainly the castle walls remain with a Georgian manor house and cottages now used as holiday rentals. The original kitchen garden and orchard has been restored and the main arena is used as a venue for music events over the summer. There are good views over the Teifi river and a copy of the giant carved chair awarded at the first Eisteddfod held at the Castle in 1176.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 July 2023
- Jenny BTurners Hill, United Kingdom14 contributionsNo really a castle, only spent 30mins thereOnly £7 per adult which is okay value for what was there. No buildings to go into however, there are plenty of signs and a short video tell you the history of the castle. The kitchen gardens were beautiful and the views were pretty from the towers. There is a cafe and a small gift shop. In addition, there is a play area for kids however, as we didn’t have children with us, we only spent 30mins looking round. Little disappointing and not really a castle.Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 25 July 2023
- Andrew K431 contributionsExcellent place to visit with great historyWe have visited this place a few times and the last time was this August 2023 when we were on holiday in Fishguard. We picked the perfect day to visit as HMS Wales was having an event showing off real live muskets and firing them as well as giving a very interesting insight into Admiral Nelson’s achievements and the life of the sailors and soldiers. Apart form that special event the castle itself is very interesting and you start by watching a film that gives you history and background into the Castle and the annexed buildings. Its fantastic to look at and to explore some of the historic artefacts and buildings and to learn about the history surrounding the place. You can explore at your leisure and there is a nice cafe where you can sit down and relax and enjoy a nice cup of coffee.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 22 August 2023
- virginia bCardiff, United Kingdom9 contributionsVery disappointedIt could have been nice. The staff were friendly but our accommodation was basic. No TV , No tea and coffee facilities in our room. Nothing to do at night. When we booked it said there was an evening restaurant and bar in the Kitchen 1176. But this closed at 4.30 every night. If I had known all this I wouldn’t have booked our 4 night stay here. They should let people know if things are closed or you have to go downstairs to the communal kitchen to have a cup of tea. It was so bad we were glad to get home.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 September 2023

Booked one night stay at the Castles bed and breakfast accommodation as a break from travelling all the way home after having a week in North Wales found it online and booked a premium ensuite Heritage double room for £115 .
On arrival had a code to enter the castle gates with our car , we were staying in the east wing of the castles accommodation, another key code entered us into the east wing not knowing what to expect we had to walk through the downstairs part of the wing with original slate flagstone floor and stairs lots of original features in the lounge area and utility area with a well equipped kitchen which we did not use . We opened our room door which was on the 1st floor and were pleasantly surprised, lovely clean smell , everything clean and tidy Local bottles of water and toffee waffles , in the bathroom locally made Myddfai beauty products , lovely soft towels .Old style sash windows with wooden shutters were a lovely feature , The furniture looked like old Welsh Oak with the Welsh 3 feathers on the handles once again nice feature , old style fireplace and cast radiator, plenty of power points , nice modern bathroom with a rainfall shower
Breakfast was included which was in the 1174 restaurant on site which gave a choice of cereals, juices ,tea ,coffee , croissants, jams etc then a choice of hot food off the menu we went for the full Welsh breakfast which was delicious, staff were really pleasant and made sure we had and were happy with everything a great experience
Afterwards we liked the place so much we booked another night stay online and we were able to keep the same room which was great
For £115 it is a bargain great accommodation within an historic castle grounds , excellent food even the castle house is available to look around as with the castle grounds , gift shop on site and straight onto the main street in Cardigan on foot with an abundance of shops , places to eat and drink , Highly recommended will be staying here again

Perfect few days self catering in the Gardeners Cottage. The castle is small but full of character and charm with so many friendly smiling faces from staff who couldn't do enough to help us. So quiet and peaceful and just what we needed after a troubled few months. Looking forward to another visit.

The worst castle I have ever visited. I would have been more satisfied lighting a match and watching our £30 burn for a few minutes. What a rip off . Yes we paid £7 per adult x4 and £1 for each dog x2 . Even the dogs looked up at me as if to say ‘where’s the castle?’ It’s buried somewhere under the lawn I think…

Excellent accommodation, full of character, very friendly and helpful staff. Great facilities. Private and secure parking. Wonderful grounds to explore and relax in, right in the town centre so easy to walk to restaurants etc. Excellent breakfast, great service and quality ingredients.
Cannot really fault anything other than no TV in room.
Would recommend highly.

Real highlight of our visit with our 5 year old was the activity "knight school". It was so entertaining and the man leading the session was superb. The site itself has a lovely garden and a little play area.

What an absolute rip off. £7 per adult to look at a few walls. Which is described as a castle. That's a bit debatable to say the least. Once inside you will find a rather boring Georgian house and that's about it. Not even a place for a coffee. Keep your money and go elsewhere. On saying that, you would be hard pressed to find anything decent in the town. Best part of Cardigan is the by pass!

Hello there,I am thinking of visiting Cardigan Castle with my mother who has mobility problems and can not walk far and I am concernd about parking as I can not see any disable parking close to the castle. Is there parking within the grounds of the Castle?
I thank you in advance for your responce.
David D
Pwllheli, UK1 contribution
Sorry, there is no parking within the castle, but there is one disabled bay on the hill outside. Other disabled bays are about 300 metres away along the high street. The castle grounds has slopes that would make wheelchair use a bit tough. Car parks near the castle are at the foot of steep hills, and parking is often at a premium
