Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

So Hedionda literally means "Stinky" and, well, it's aptly named. While there are tons of flamingos, it truly smells like sulfur and I liked some of the other lagunas better. It could be the time of year we visited, so don't write it off completely.

We were struck by beauty. Equally, pollution with lots of plastic was also of huge concern to us. Clean it up!

We reached Laguna Hedionda (also known as the Red Lagoon) after about an hour by jeep from San Juan de Rosario, on the second day of our three day crossing from Uyuni to San Pedro de Atacama. The place is beautiful: the strange, reddish color of the water, dotted by the pink of a large number of flamingos, some yellowish little plants on edge of the lake, just in front of us, the blue of the sky, the brown of the mountains in the background and the sounds of the wind and the flamingos and..... nothing else...
We loved it...

Beatiful lake full of flamingos. You can walk around here for a while and take loads of pictures but it can be windy sometimes

It's a nice laguna but for sure not the best.
As the trip from the Salar to this laguna is around three and a half hours just to go, I'd suggest to do it only if you'll spend the night in the area and you'll get the chance to see the other lagunas too.
Doing a 7 hours round-trip in a day from the Salar just for this laguna and the black one (nearby) isn't worth.

You stop here during the Uyuni tour and you will spot large groups of flamingos. I really love animals so that's why this bus a 5 star stop for me. The place is a nice looking lagoon and it is very quite (when the car engines are off :) ). Really loved it!

We saw quite a few lagunas on the Salar tour but each one was slightly different. This is coloured red from the presence of arsenic. There were lots of flamingos as they come here during winter. It was a very desolate location but the amount of flamingos was amazing. Definitely worth a stop on the Salar tour. I don't think many tours stop here specifically. Our guide was pretty relaxed and let us stop wherever we asked. We were very far ahead of our convoy of 3 so we stopped off here to wait for the others to catch up. Very peaceful and calm.

This was the highland lagoon with the perhaps highest number of flamingos on our trip from Uyuni to San Pedro. Definitely more than previous Laguna Canapa and perhaps similar as Laguna Colorada. I took hundreds of photos... The landscape is nice with the lake and mountains, but it really was all about the flamingos for me. It was very cold in October, I was freezing in my winter jacket due to the strong wind.
