A bad trip planning made me exhausted and had to take the trolley taxi up! I felt ashamed of myself for not being able to hike up only 3-4 Kilometers but then it really wasn't an easy hike, specially when you aren't feeling well. The fare was IDR400.000 (-/+ US$30) to the rim. Seems expensive but actually isn't! That is... More

Just don't go. It's a hard dangerous trail down to the crater, where you and the crowd go bumping into each other, inhaling toxic fumes. Why? When you reach the bottom you barely see the blue fire through the smoke - but nevermind the blue fire. You are probably going to be very impressed with the miners carrying stones. Intense... More

After the strenuous uphill struggle, made harder by seeing the locals do the same carrying heavy loads of sulphur, the views at the end are so so worth it. Ijen lake is beautiful and to sit watching the steam clouds float over it is truly breathtaking. We travelled 12 hours from Bromo and I'm so happy we did, as I... More

We left for the blue flame tour at 1 am. I think though it would be better to leave at 11.30- 12 midnight. The reason being the trek is arduous and really time taking. However, it is totally worth walking with the cluster of stars giving you company ;) The blue flames and the crater lake is a sight to... More

Impressive volcano, a lot of activity because of the sulfur mine. You have a lot to see/experience at night. With clouds / fog you can not enjoy the views and the blue flames are hard to see but still impressive, especially the hard working sulfur mine workers!

We skipped the whole blue fire thing and instead got out of bed at sunrise. We were at the crater rim around nine and had an amazing unclouded view until around noon when the clouds set in. The crater is closed off for entry at 1pm, but could be closed earlier depending on the weather conditions. Don't go without gas... More

I originally wanted to see the blue fire and the acidic lake up close but for such a tour you would have to start at around midnight to 1 am. Since no one told us that we started our tour at 3 am, too late to see the flames. The hike upwards is easy, good shoes are still recommended tough.... More

Mt. Ijen is a must do in Indonesia. We took a tour starting at 3am. That's too late if you want to see the unique blue flames though, as sunrise is at 5am and you can only see them when it's dark. We had a great tour guide who gave us plenty information about the sulfur miners and geothermal activity.... More

The best time to climb this volcano is at midnight. The ride up to the volcano crater is tough, really tough. Joined by our unique guide Cahyo and the many hard-working miners handled the trip to the crater of a couple of hours, including breaks. When you get up to the crater you get when it's dark, the chance to see...
