Wow!! We rented a motorbike from our hotel and headed up towards Batutumonga. The route we took has us climbing upwards through the rice paddies. We knew there was supposed to be a lovely panorama at the top, but WOW!!! We were blown away. Just past Batutumonga, you can also find the graves in the giant stone at Loko'mata. I recommend checking them out. We had spent the day before on a tour of different gravesites in the region, and so on this day we weren't really looking for any specific gravesites. However, Loko'mata is very unique and worth a quick visit. We took another route down to Rantepao from Batutumonga, but I would recommend seeking out the rice paddy route for the way up. The scenery just builds and builds until you are finally at the top. We must have stopped ten times to take photos on the way up!

The journey here itself offered breathtaking views with plenty of stops for superb panaramic photos. Make sure you stop at the coffee kiosk at Deri which is perched over hanging the edge of valley.
At Batutmonga alight at the church cross the paddy fields and take the gentle climb to the restaurant.
During your stay in TT explore the beautiful area around Bebe and the eastern circular road (not the main road) from Marante to Palawa. Try and visit Kesu Ketsu in the morning for a better sun position for photos.

Batutumongga itself is not a wonderful place by itself, but the hiking in the neighboring village sand rice fields is some of the best you can do near Rantepao! We took the bemo up and hiked all the way down along small roads only used by motorbikes. Best to ask the local people often for directions in the beginning, as it can be a bit confusing to find the right trail. Once you're on track it is easy and you cannot get lost.

Batutumongga provides travelers view an amazing overhead view of the small town of Rantepao, as it is surrounded by lush green hills and rice terraces. Especially on a sunny day, the scenery is really quite stunning. At the top of the mountain, there is a small hotel where you can stay. The environment is very rather quiet and peaceful, and the climate is nice and cool. This makes it the perfect place to just relax, have a tea, and enjoy the view.
Other reviewers comment that the journey to the Batutumongga is rough (literally). However, this was half the excitement for me! From Rantepao, there are shared rides available that take people up the mountain. We negotiated with a driver to allow us to hire him privately for the day to take us there; however, to do this is rather challenging if you don't speak Indonesian. I suggest asking your hotel to assist you with getting a ride to the top.
The road itself is very bumpy and winding, and in some places it's very steep! It's very narrow, and often times passing an oncoming vehicle is rather scary, especially when there's a long drop beside you. We even had to stop on one occasion and help a car stuck in the mud. However, the drivers seem to know exactly what they're doing despite our perceived danger of the situation. The road going up does bring you nearby to rice terraces, where you'll see locals working. There are also plenty of boulders all over the place, and you may even see some with the burial caves carved out. It really is quite a memorable ride to the top, although be warned that it may not be pleasant if you easily get motion sickness.
I definitely recommend visiting Batutumongga if in Rantepao.

As much as I would love to hike to Batutumongga one day, this time we drove there. The road is narrow and very windy, but the trip is worth making because of the beautiful scenery along the way.
We enjoyed a nice lunch at the hotel restaurant in Batutumongga.

A place to look at the paddy rice terrace from top, with buffaloes, stones and Tongkonan scattered in between. A beautiful viewpoint you would come to when you are visiting the stone graves as this is where they have huge stones in Tana Toraja. There is a resort if you wish to spend a day or two here.

Not easy to reach this area with motorcycle but worth it! Advice: don't take the shortest trip on google maps, the road is very bad, go for the longest one instead.

We added a visit in Sulawesi following another recommendation and boy, this was a highlight of our indonesia tour. As a couple who want to have a private tour guide and it wasnt an easy task to find someone and there are not to many names and reviews and even if you have a name it is difficult to get a phone number for a contact. After some search and through another guide we found in some of the recommendations on this webpage, we were referred to Julius Tandirerung and received his number. so you can imagine that it was a difficult decision to go all this way and plan 4 days of trip without really knowing who is on the other end of the line. Boy, we were lucky! Julius, +62 #821 #2473 #8880 , is apparently one of the 2 main tour guides for the entire area, who trains all other guides and you could see the respect he gets from them. His English was fluent and his knowledge remarkable. He is friendly, always smiling and does everything with a positive attitude. We visited a funeral, different graves, a house with a dead man inside, the live stock market and more. an experience not to be missed.
