Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My wife and I had visited the Bagan plains during our holiday in Myanmar. We had a look at this unusual monastery that was built underground.
It is a small place. The underground quarters provide a cool and quiet place for the monks.
This place is bland, spartan and there is not much to see.

Brought here by tour guide. Series of cool caves/tunnels to escape the heat. Monks still live there. Per guide, one of the sleeping cots belongs to an arhat who had died a few years ago. Cool monastery; worth a look.

This Cave Monastery its a very interesting thing to do in Bagan and I'm surprised with so many negatives reviews about this place. Yes, its mainly a cave but still its an underground temple in an area where you have almost 3000 temples on the top. So its way different than anything else around.
Is not very easy to find and is not even close to the main attractions so have some patience while looking at your map. The place is just a few minutes away from Thambula temple and on the back of the golf course.
Inside the temple, you will find a meditation area with some other halls and at least 4 or 5 tunnels that would give you a basic idea of how they used to live this monks in the past. The place is quite dark so, if you have a torch, take it with you.
If you are in the area I would recommend you to go!! Also, on the back if this temple there is a small pagoda that has some very well preserved murals (as a plus). So, go and enjoy!

We spent an hour or two trying to find these caves due to incorrect map location on trip advisor (correction has been provided), thankfully we persisted and found this part of Old bagan, near Thambula Temple. These caves are a little off the usual tourist route but well worth the visit. The caves are a very special place and we were lucky to be shown around by the caretaker. The caves are still being used by monks, with a few currently in residence and using the caves for meditation. I will treasure seeing this retreat for the monks as will anyone who has an interest in the practice of meditation.

I read the other reviews of the Cave Monastery and were surprised by how negative they were. I toured the monastery with my husband and 5 kids and we thoroughly enjoyed it but we had a guide who described live in the monastery and toured us around, introducing us to people, etc.

My draw to this location was to check out the tunnels and to sit and meditate out of the hot sun. It's a simple monastery and one that does not draw crowds...something that also attracted me. It's quiet and cool and there are other temples and pagodas around the whole area. One thing that I really enjoyed was the local village nearby. There is a place to grab local food and you can get a tour of the village by some really nice people that live there. Its for sure a unique experience for those that like to get off the beaten trails and experience something different than the rest...

Tip: Star Beam is an excellent restaurant (check my review and pics) conveniently located in Old Bagan. Delicious Burmese food (and it also has some European food)! Don't miss the warm bread!
Tip: behind the cave there is a small old temple that had murals of some interest.
This cave monastery is not very interesting. The walls don’t have any mural. It’s just a cave with a bed for monk’s meditation.

Visit Myanmar with Solidarasia Travels and learn about meditation, and its role in Burmese life. This monastery is really worth to visit. Take a ebike and ride through the site to get there

We liked the idea of a different kind of sight in Bagan. The temple next yo the cave has nice carvings and wall paintings. But the cave tunnels were barren bar two altars. Not worth the trip if not already there.
