I went on this solo and a frenchman joined the tour. It helped we were both very curious about the process, so they took the time to show us additional things that normally are not on the tour. It's an incredibly labor intensive process and quite a few fumes associated with it. But I really enjoyed taking the time to go and visit this place and pick up a few gifts for family.

I have " toured " many factories, and cottage industries in my travels, from weaving villages, turkish silk carpet weavers, silk farms etc. So I am always a little skeptical of what I am being taken into when a greeter comes out and invites you in. This place stands out from the others in both old Bagan and new. Bagan. The process is so intricate and you can walk up close to see the intricate and intensive work put into each piece of lacquerware being fabricated. If you are unaware of the process, it will surprise you. Once past the education portion of this location, you get to the show room.

I visited several " lacquerware" factories and showrooms in both old Bagan and New Bagan. Either they were unimpressive or they had staff who were only to eager to sell you something. Here at the Bagan Lacquerware. Co. Ltd. none of that exists. The staff will let you roam a very large showroom at your own pace . They never try to sell you anything, only assist you in what you want to see or help you find what you might be looking for. The owner Ms. Maw is a gracious woman who runs a place of business which is a reflection of her class, style and just all around pleasant nature and attitude. Once you meet her, you ' ll understand why the staff is so nice. The lacquerware is so nice here. Top notch. You might feel it is more expensive, but it is well worth the extra $, Morever because if how they treat you as a customer.

Before I could haggle about the fixed prices, Ms. Maw came over and discounted my purchase without me even having to ask. Now when is the last time that's happened? I would recommend this factory / shop to everyone and hope that success does not spoil what Ms. Maw has established for herself and her staff. Shop around and see for your self. Just let Ms. maw know you have heard good things about her and her staff and her Business.
Safe travels everyone.

Bagan is a remarkable city for temple viewing but an additional side benefit was a wonderful shop for purchasing quality souvenirs from Myanmar.

Bagan House Lacquerware is a most worthwhile experience when visiting Bagan. My wife and I visited Bagan House as part of a tour. The process of creating lacquerware was explained and demonstrated during the tour in a warm and friendly manner. The demonstration was very impressive because it showed the huge number of man hours needed to create each piece and the artistry involved in their creation.
After the demonstration there was time for shopping and there are amazing pieces to be purchased. There were items on sale in every price range. My wife purchased several items one of which was a serving tray. When we arrived back in the US she washed the items we had taken back with us and noticed that the serving tray had a slight imperfection in the lacquer which allowed water to go beneath the lacquer surface.
My wife contacted the company via email and explained the problem. They couldn't have been any more accommodating. They explained that all of the items are individualy hand crafted and it would take some time to recreate what she had purchased. They asked for measurements and email photos of the tray. True to their word in their specified time period we received an email photo of what they had created. They asked if that matched what we had purchased and we replied that it was. They then said that they would send the replacement to us. The new tray arrived in perfect condition and is beautiful.
Every business should treat their customers as Bagan House does.
Bravo to excellent work and customer service.

I'm a novice re lacquerware. After visiting this place I now understand how good lacquerware is produced. It is a very complex process. I feel better equipped to tell the difference between fake and good lacquerware. Must do while visiting Bagan

I stopped here after a recommendation from a friend. I enjoy shopping and I was hoping to buy some lacquerware. I was by myself (no group tour or personal guide). Immediately upon entering, a man approached me wanting to guide me around. I declined as I prefer to look at my own pace. While wandering and watching the people working on the process, a shop lady started to follow me a little too closely. I told her I preferred to look on my own and if I had questions I would ask.

I was then left alone to look around the shop which was nice. I could enjoy looking at my own leisurely pace. I was quite disgusted though to see the shop ladies offering tea and cookies to every other customer entering the shop. They did not offer me any. I was planning to buy something from their shop-- and I might have even bought cookies (I think they sold the ones they were offering customers) but I immediately left instead. They were not very friendly when I walked out and instead were overly nice to the big tour bus stopping in. I found the items to be a bit overpriced-- although there were some that were cheap. I did see the same things for sale at the Yangon International Airport shops. They did take credit cards supposedly but I never bought anything to find out if they really did. It's a shame they don't seem to treat all customers equal. I didn't want someone following me around the shop constantly, but I would have liked the same customer service of tea and cookies as the others.

It felt like its set up more for a tour bus shopping stop. I did not see anything out of the ordinary at this lacquerware shop that I didn't see at others. Disappointing. It felt like they are all about making money.
This is the first shop in Myanmar where I felt this.

The ladies in our entourage spent lots of money in this lacquerware shop. The staff explained & demonstrated the tedious process convincingly that you feel bad if you did not purchase something. At least here you know you will get the real deal. For example, it takes 4-5 months to make a simple coffee cup (USD30). The process of turning thin strips of bamboo/rattan into magnificent bowls & other objects is painstakingly wonderful. Even if you don't intend to buy anything, a visit to the shop can be educational. At least it will teach you how and why not to buy the sub-standard ones found at the temples. Enjoy.

To begin they teach you all about the incredible work that goes into producing their Lacquerware. Their selection is incredible and the prices are reasonable for the quality you get. The owner, Maw Maw Aung, is a lovely person who has given demonstrations around the world including the US. As a student she stood up for democracy and spent a year in jail. For this alone or shop is a treasure.

We enjoyed our visit to the Lacquerware shop. We were able to view a demonstration and see how many types of lacquerware are made. We left with purchased gifts!

After leisurely lunch I went for shopping to this place.Located at Jasmine Road in New Bagan, in a spacious premises, the shop cum manufacturing area offer genuine Lacquerware.A young lady took me round explaining the intricate processes of making this ware right from cleaning of bamboo raw materials, developing of vegetable colours, drying and carving etc. It's an educative experience for me. I was lucky that owner of the shop Ms.Maw Maw Aung, a cultured person, was in the shop and she not only clarified to me about various varieties of Lacqueware from cheapest to the expensive items and gifted me a book on Buddhist teachings written by a renowned Monk. I purchased a few items including a beautiful statue of reclining Buddha, though a bit expensive but worth the price as it got an unusual ornamental shroud wrapped around Buddha. Got good discount also. Shop accepts credit and debit cards unlike many other shops in the area but with extra charges.

I stumbled upon this place after buying lacquer-ware at one of the pagodas (silly me). This shop and open workshop is amazing - you can watch the workers create beautiful items in front of you, take pictures (ask first) and then shop in the cool and clean shop. I was carefully attended all the time by a nice lady without feeling pressured to buy anything. She explained how each item I picked up is made and stepped away. Each product is clearly marked in USD which helps you decide, the quality is comparative to prices - some of the items are more than USD 100 but the quality is very good. I bought a few items which came up to USD 67 and went to the cashier with an intention to buy. I asked for a discount and they gave me 20% - since I didn't have my credit card I split the amount between some dollars and kyats and the staff was very attentive and nice during the whole process. At the end, they packed all my purchases nicely, put them in a nice canvas bag, threw in a free bottle of water and a three-dollar bracelet of my choice. I highly recommend people visiting Bagan to spend at least an hour here - it is located in a cool and beautifully decorated garden, items are hand-made and you can learn a lot about this typical handicraft from the region.
