The Karakoram Road (KKH) is one of the best drives I have ever experienced. It is a magnificent work of engineering, stretching between majestic mountains and stunning valleys.
A trip along the KKH is a true adventure. You'll pass through winding roads and climb high above the valley. The views you encounter along this journey are truly amazing, from snowy peaks to clear rivers.
Apart from its natural beauty, KKH also offers the opportunity to interact with local residents and experience its rich culture. Small markets along the road serve delicious food and interesting handicraft items.
KKH is a trip that will provide an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a wilderness adventure and wants to experience the magic of the Himalayas. Thank you KKH for this wonderful experience.

Karakorum highway is adventure road connecting China & Pakistan. It is road through Himamalaya, Karakorum and Pamir mountain ranges. These ranges are called to be one of highest mountain ranges in the world. The road is from Havelian, Pakistan to Kashgar, China and the distance is 1200kms. It also known as Pakistan & China friendship highway. Driving over this highway is not less than a fun adventure and it goes through world highest pass "Khunjerab" and where today is actual border of Pakistan & China. This road start to build in 1966 and completed in 1978 under supervision of Chinese engineers.

From Khunjerab pass to Islamabad this highway connects dozens of villages, civilizations and cultures and the landscape is overwhelming. This is the only way which connects China to Pakistan and Northern Areas to rest of Pakistan.
Avoid to travel in public buses as this has the highest number of accidents each year. Definitely something worth doing when in Pakistan if you have the time, but not recommended to do it alone due to security issues, I traveled KKH as part of tour organized by a local well reputed tour outfitter Vertical Explorers Tours, well recommended.Road is incredible all along the river upto Thakot Bridge and the photos are truly spectacular. It is well worth driving if you can put up with the police security hassle in Kohistan districts of NWFP province of Pakistan. Does have the wow factor but a road is a road after so many miles of twists and turns. One can see Rakaposhi, Nanga Parbat and numerous other peaks and towns traveling on this wonderland connecting highway.

No surprise people life can go active till 100..I feel a strong connection with Pakistan. I have been many times on Karakorum Highway: on the bycicle, in the car, as a couple, as a family with kids. The surrounding are amazingly beautiful and Hunza people are ambassadors of this intriguing and impressive land!

We travelled the KKH from Kashgar, China up to Islamabad, Pakistan, where it ends (Via Khunjerab Pass border between China and Pakistan). It is a spectacularly scenic drive with majestic snow capped mountains of the Pamirs, Karakoram, Himalayas and the HIndu Kush mountain ranges. High peaks, and many many glacier originated rivers (Hunza, Indus, etc) everywhere.
The KKH road itself ranges from excellent to very bad, and is under reconstruction in many places by the Chinese. Great engineering feat as this highway crosses very mountainous areas. Due to these mountains, there are many many daily landslides, rockslides and glacier slides that blocked the road. In general, the Chinese side of the KKH is in much better repair than the Pakistani side.
Note that in Kohistan, Foreigners are NOT allowed on the roads after 4PM and before 8AM; due to some Taliban activity there. So plan your drive on KKH through Kohistan District appropriately.

The Karakorum Highway, considered as the eighth wonder of the world due to its high elevation and the difficult conditions in which it was constructed, starts from the Abbottabad Mor near Hassanabdal (Islamabad) and enters Xinjiang Uyghur Region of China from Khunjerab Pass (Gilgit-Baltistan) at an altitude of 16,200 feet after covering distance of nearly 806 KM, making it the highest border crossing of the world. The breathtaking beautiful surrounding, the mountains and the river Indus traveling along with this highway make the traveling on this highway a Journey to remember for a lifetime. At the start, the highway crosses through Mansehra the region surrounded by high mountains, the enters Chillas where the highway moves alongside the Indus river where the highway is at the edge of the mountain and you can see the river Indus flow hundreds of meters below. Then the highway enters the Gilgit-Baltistan region, the region of Nanga Parbat and K2 Mountain. There is a point at Karakoram Highway where on a clear day you can view the awesome peak of Nanga Parbat, at the Raikot Bridge a road connects with Karakoram Highway that leads to the Fairy Meadows, the base camp of Nanga Parbat. As you get closer to Gilgit city there is a Junction point of Karakorum, Hindukush, and the Himalayas, a must point to stop for photography. There is also the Confluence of River Indus and River Gilgit at this point. The scenic beauty and awesome mountain views start as soon as the Karakoram Highway enters Hunza region, the Paradise on Earth. At Hunza from Karakoram Highway, one can see the 1100 years old Altit Fort, there is also a 1000 years old village called Ganesh on the way to Attaabad. Near Attaabad, there is an archeologic site that contains the store carving that belongs to Romans when they travel to china through Silk Route. The highway traveled till the Khunjerab Pass at the altitude of 16,200 feet the border that connects Pakistan and China. There are many Hotels and Restaurants alongside the Karakoram Highway where one can spend a night or two with peace and comfort or eat local food. For those who love scenic beauty, awesome mountain views and flowing rivers, this is a journey one must have and do remember to bring your camera.

Travelling via Naran to khunjarab top china border is a lifetime enjoyable experience You have wonderful road with scenic view and delicious foods especially at PTDC restaurants The journey is safe and the terrain is wonderful especially if you have a good vehicle and nice company.

Traveling along KKH is very adventurous and extremely educative. I have done it numerous times during past 26 years and every time I have a new feeling about it. I have seen this road in worst of conditions too but even then there is something special about it. Weather one is passing through the pine forest on the green hills of Besham or the absolutely barren landscape of Chilas or the orchards in Hunza Valley or the Attabad Lake that was never there few years back or the winding road near Khunjerab Pass where it becomes the highest highway anywhere on planet earth, KKH is very unique and absolutely fascinating. Truly a man carved wonder that took hundred of lives of Chines and Pakistani soldiers before completion.
If you live in Pakistan and haven't traveled along KKH up to Khunjerab Pass, you have missed a lot. If you are visiting Pakistan that traveling along KKH should be a priority thing for you. You wont regret it I can assure you.

The KKH (Karakoram Highway) is no doubt the 8th wonder of the world. Men of unmatched courage & unbeatable will carved it through the insurmountable mountains under the most hostile circumstances in the era when there was not even any telegraphic communication was possible. Their story would induce a current through one's spine. Hello I saw your post about the a Karakoram Highway. Can you tell me how you completed your journey? Did you do it on your own, hire a driver or go through a company. My wife and I are planning to do it in July. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

My trip to the Khunjerab Pass along the Karakorum Highway was many years ago. I traveled with some friends in a private car belonging to one of them. Please do take the advice of your Embassy regarding security before you embark upon your proposed trip. If they provide you the needed clearance. We have a saying which translates to "Come Often and welcome"!

Hi, Naran is not situated on this Highway, rather it is approached from Manshera, Hazara via a side road. To get back to the highway you would have to come back to Manshera. Yes, there are toilets located in Petrol Pumps and hotels all along the route.
