Seeing this tree was one of the highlights of our trip to Crete! This magnificent tree is between 3000-5000 years old and is amazingly still fruiting. Olive branches have been cut from the tree and given to the marathon winners since the Athens Games in 2004 and it was really neat to be able to see this little part of Olympic history as well. There's a nice little shop that houses the small museum and they sell drinks, snacks, and olive oil. It's a great stop if you're close by and I would 100% recommend it for anyone visiting this area of Crete!

This olive tree was already over one thousand years old when Columbus started his first journey across the Atlantic, so it's nice to visit it if you're in Crete. The overall experience was above my expectations, not only because of the ancient olive tree, but also because of the tranquility and beauty of the entire scenery. Visiting the tiny museum dedicated to the ancient olive tree was also a pleasant experience, as well as the relaxing time we've spent on the vine shady terrace of the nearby cafeteria over a pint of cold local beer and some snacks.

The Olive Tree Museum of Vouves is located next to the Monumental Olive Tree of Vouves in the settlement of Pano Vouves.
The museum is housed in a traditional building and was donated to the Municipality by the family of Panagiotis Karapatakis who used it as his residence.
Entrance fee 1,- Euro. Just a very small museum but ‚nice to visit‘ if you stay there for the old tree.

A little off the beaten track but well worth a visit. The tree itself is very large and imposing and has an interesting information board providing some information linked to the olympics.
There is also a very small museum (2 rooms) about olive oil production.
Free to visit.

If you are in the area stop and see an Olive Tree estimated between 3000-5000 years old. It was impressive. Also there is a place to get some food and drinks. A nice quick stop with a small museum. We sat and had a drink and desert.

The magnificent ancient olive tree of Vouves has huge hollow roots that have grown right up out of the earth and are an unbelievable 12m in perimeter! Thought to be between 3,500-5,000 years old, it is actually listed on Wikipedia as the world's oldest olive tree. It lives on still bearing olives in the heart of the small, picturesque, very rural village of Ano Vouves which is an idyllic setting for such a stunningly majestic tree. The olive tree museum housed right next to the tree has free entrance and is usually open all day throughout the summer months. Everything is beautifully displayed and presented.

Visiting this place is must. I sat right by the tree and thought I wish the tree could talk and tell me a couple if things I've missed in history classes. Highly recommended.

Worth a slight detour (it's in pretty much the middle of nowhere) to see this fabulous tree, said to be one of the oldest in the world. The olive oil factory and museum were not open when we visited, but we were quite happy just to wander around the tree and appreciate it's age and beauty.

I would say the Olive Tree Museum of Vouves is definitely worth visiting for a photo opportunity. The tree itself is impressive, the museum (with free entry) is small but well presented. There is also a small cafe selling drinks and ice-creams etc. I was even more interested by the fruit trees in their kitchen garden and the views of the surrounding countryside on the drive there and back. It won't keep you occupied all afternoon but definitely worth including on a driving tour of the area.

Hi my name is Alexandra Caravanos and both of my parents are Crete. I love Crete and its culture. What I would like to ask if the oldest Olive tree is still growing. I mean the actually tree itself. I understand the tree is still producing olives. Are the olives used to produce olive oil and is it sold to the public.
Thank you for your kind attention. Looking forward to hearing from you
