The place's architecture is similar to our old parliament building. When we visited in October, there was no crowd. It has multiple shivlings. You need to walk up the steep stair on the hill hence, it will be difficult for senior citizens. The place was secluded in my opinion so please try to visit during the day time.

Mitawali is a 64 yogini shiv temple located on a hillock about 15 km from Morena. However, if you are using Google maps, the directions are likely to be wrong. It will ask you to take a left turn from Nurabad- which will lead to a narrow road through villages and near Bateshwar temples, it degenerates into a rut. Small cars will find the going tough. However if you were to take a left turn after nearly 11.4 km from the Morena chowk (Major Intersection), its a newly laid road which will take you to Mitawali without too much fuss.
The temple is visible from about 5-6 km away. One can drive part of the way up and then its a winding walking path up to the temple. Its a great place and immediately one can see why its reputation to have "inspired" the Indian parliament building.
While there is a board saying that its a protected monument, there is no ASI plaque describing the place.
There are some text fragments in an old Indian language - difficult to say if its Pali or Prakrit.
As is the typical Indian tradition - a "defiled" temple is typically not a place of worship - so no rituals are carried out nowadays.
One can see quite a bit in the distance all around.
Inside, most of the yogini statues are missing. It does seem that there was an elaborate drainage system but difficult to understand its purpose.
Apparently there are 3-4 such Yogini temples around India - 2 in Orissa - Hirapur and Ranipur-Jharial, 3 in MP - Bhedaghat (Jabalpur), Khajuraoh and Mitawali. All are circular except the one in Khajurao. More about the Yogini cult/ practices can be read at:

mitawali and padawali is known for archeological interests with 6th-11 nth century temples. It lies 55 kms from gwalior and needs a whole day to cover all 6 spots.Temples and monuments are well maintained by archeological survey of india.some patch of roads are still in progress. The inspiration of parliament house lies here only.no food available here and the place remains lonely for most of the time. The road to reach is surrounded by green farms and the famous sanichara temple should be clubbed with the visit of these ancient temples which lies and scattered in the area of 4-5 kms.The ASI attendents are available everywhere and will assist you about the history of these monuments free of cost.No commercial activity available nearby these attractions.

Chausath Yogini Temple, Mitavli, is one of the rarest of Hindu temples in India. Its plan is circular and it is dedicated to the Tantric sect of Chausath Yogini. Most of the Hindu temples are based on square or rectangular plan. Circular temples are very rare. It is said that the design of Indian Parliament is inspired by this temple in Morena. It is also a very rare temple as there are only about a half a dozen Chausath Yogini temples in India. A Yogini in Tantra means a practitioner of Yoga, who has controlled her desires and reached a higher stage. They are related to the Matrikas and are basically various manifestations of the Divine Durga. This association with various forms of Durga gave rise to the cult of Chausath (64) Yoginis over time. The Chausath Yogini temple of Morena has an outer circle of 64 subsidiary shrines of Shiva with a central shrine of the Yogini. According to an inscription, it was built by King Devapala of the Pala dynasty of Bengal in 9th century.

a small excursion from gwalior, abt 45 km. this place needs to be publicised. the design which has inspired indian parliament building. also the location on a hillock is excellent. since we visited in winter, the journey after leaving highway was very soothing with lush fields all around, two cautions:
1. the road is not smooth all along.
2. one needs to climb a few steps to reach the top.
the ASI attendant was very friendly and explained about the place as also other places to visit nearby. padhawali, bateshwar and shanischara temple. all three are MUST SEE

It's a beautiful temple set atop a hill and open to sky like most Yogini temples. It has an aura of mystery and is unique in its design and location. If you have the time, you must visit the temple!

There was no one when we reached this place, it is less known among tourists. I as a single woman traveller has to hire a cab and also a guide to accompany to see this place. 40 kms from Gwalior. Recommend to travel in a group. It has a functioning Shiva temple inside, and kept very clean, requires a short trek to reach the temple. Please do not litter.

From Gwalior it is very easy to make this excursion and it is well worth it. Make sure you have some kind of SUV or high car as the terrain is not always smooth. There were no tourists when we went and it was well worth the trip. From there you can visit Padawali and Bateshwar the same day.

If you love culture, you will love it.
It looks like our current parliament house...whether there is a link, I don't know. But its a delight !
The place is on a hill. You need to have the stamina to climb the stairs to reach there - carry a water bottle.
