Fortunately we stayed an extra day in Saranda to see Butrint. We have seen archeological sites all over the world and didn't think this site would be worth it but were we wrong! It's a historical gem that encases a site's development from the Illyrians through the Greek, Roman, Turkish, and Venetian periods. And it's set in an environmental wonderland.

We were on a Holland America cruise that changed its itinerary to Sarande, Albania. We looked at the excursions and saw a UNESCO sight called Butrint. To be honest we normally do not take excursions as we like to explore on our own but read it was better to take guided tours. Note we felt safe everywhere we went in... More

Visited this with a guide - it was a most interesting place . A guide gives you the history but you also need time to just enjoy the whole area; however if no guide I would recommend buying Albania by Bradt books in advance of your visit. However, sadly most of the area is unsuitable for anyone with walking difficulties.... More

We visited Butrint on an excursion from Corfu. Albania was completely different from our expectations as Saranda is a modern seaside resort with a very upmarket atmosphere. Butrint is wonderfully preserved with examples from almost 2 millenia . The site is very spread out and some parts would not be accessible to persons with limited mobility. This a a great... More

Butrint (Buthrotum) - treasure of history and archeology of Albania, a goal, UNESCO declared World Heritage Site in 1992. Promontory overshadowed by natural forests is part of a complex ecosystem that includes a large freshwater lake that is discharged into the Ionian Sea Canal Vivari. Butrint is a happy mix of historical monuments and pristine natural surroundings, which make it... More

We were lucky with an expert archeology guide accompanying us together with our Albanian guide so we had the best of all worlds. There was a leaflet in English available at the entrance but also a detailed guidebook (in English and other languages) was for sale at a very modest price at a stall outside the museum in the centre... we went on an organised coach trip. Was a bit slow being shown around by our guide. Would have been more interesting if we had been allowed to roam around on our own, however it was a very interesting place to visit.

We took the city bus (less then 1 euro) out to the park. They run every 1/2 hour in the morning and every hour in the afternoon. You do not need to waste your money on a taxi. Spent about 2 hours there walking all the way around. Did not use a tour guide. Entry is 700 leke or about... More

Nearly every civilization has marched through Albania: the Hellenic, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman, etc. This national park contains ruins from 28 centuries as well as a beautiful natural setting with plenty of opportunities for walking. You can wander on your own, or hire a guide. Locals also have a small stand, selling local crafts. This is a UNESCO site, but... More
