Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The main entrance to the ancient city of Petra is called the Siq. It is a narrow winding passageway that is about .6 mi (1 km) long and in some places only 6 ft (2 m) wide. It is surrounded on both sides by towering canyon walls. The colors are gorgeous, the weather-worn rock shapes out of this world and punctuated with Nabatean carvings. Incredible! Just be aware of your surroundings, because the horse carriages travel at breakneck speed and seem to think they own the road. To get to the Siq, you’ll first walk thru the main gate and follow the path known as Bab As Siq, Gateway to the Siq (this distance is also about 1 km). Animal transportation is available, but walk if you can, you’ll enjoy the experience much more. At the end of your visit, the walk out is uphill, so save a little energy for the end! Go early and go off-season.

I am sooo glad we took the Jordan Pass for 2 days so we got to pass the Siq several times...I just loved it. Make sure you take the time and really appreciate this 1.2 kms passage and don't rush to the Treasury.
There is really a lot to see from carvings on the walls as well as the ancient pipes for transporting water to the city, continue looking up and see how the two edges would fit if you put them back together.
Definitely one of my favorite parts in Petra.

The Siq is the main entrance to the old city of the Nabatean Empire - Petra. The access is through a very narrow gorge, about 1.5 kilometers long. In many places in the gorge you almost do not see the sky anymore. However, the trip is worth it because at the end of the way you will see the most important building in Petra - Al Khazneh (Treasury).

It was a bit underwhelming. The ruins are unfortunately not well protected and being sandstone deteriorating every year. They are quite a site to see and some well worth the time and expense to see. But I think you should more enjoy the overall site and how incredible the carvings are and how many big projects they had. The scale is fantastic and deserves appreciation, not so much the main area. I do recommend you go the extra 500 yards to the amphitheater and just do a 360 degree turn to take in the details.

This is the walkway you have seen in Indiana Jones and many other films/documentaries. Ensure you hire a guide as there is so much to see and spot along the way. We went through the Siq at night and one morning and noticed nothing. But on the third walkthrough, with a guide, we were amazed at the various carvings along the way that you wouldn't notice otherwise.

After admiring the stunning Wadi Rum, it seemed that nothing more beautiful could happen to us. And yet. Siq. The Siq Gorge and its colors: red, navy blue, orange and yellow at the top of the rocks, and pinks and browns of sandstone at the bottom. And above everything there is a blue sky. Additionally, the shapes of the rocks: wavy and eroded into fantastic and unique forms, strikingly resembling plants. The further we go, the closer the rocks get to each other, and at some point we are almost completely deprived of the view of the sky. At the end, the biggest attraction - the entrance to Petra. The guide puts us on one side of the gorge, not allowing us to go any further. At some point, he begins to let go of one person at a time, taking short breaks so that everyone can, at least for a moment, contemplate the view that suddenly appears to them. In the narrow passage between the rocks, one of the most wonderful things we have ever seen appears - the dazzling Al-Hazna - the Pharaoh's Treasury. We don't want to move from here, we want to enjoy what we saw here, but unfortunately those behind us are already shouting to move on.

Get enchanted as you walk the main pathway into the city of Petra. There are alot of markers and info along the way. It took me about 40mins with some stops. If you want a carriage ride you can pay for it but I think the walk is reflective and humbling.

We've walked back and forth enough times now to sometimes wish it wasn't quite so long. Because it takes at least a half hour to get in and out (from entrance to treasury), leaving Petra for a nap or lunch, etc isn't always worth it. It doesn't cease to be beautiful however.
We experienced walking out as the sun was setting, and it sure gets dark quickly. Luckily we had flashlights along. It definitely felt safe, just eerie and adventurous. It's usually an interesting and fun walk - we've never taken the horses or golf carts but those are options.

The walk to the start of the main sites in Petra, such as the Treasury building takes about 30 minutes. You can hire a donkey or a horse but it far better to walk. It is definitely worth getting a local guide because there are many things to see that you would probably miss. Look out for the carving of the Bedouin leading a camel.

The Siq is a long narrow canyon that leads to the Treasury in Petra. The Siq has high walls that vary in color. The path is paved, it takes around half an hour if you hike to the Treasury. The Treasury features in the Indiana Jones movies. When you turn the corner and see the Treasury for the first time, it is a revelation. No amount of movies can prepare you for the real thing. By the way, if you don't want to walk, you can take kart one way or both ways. Prices are fixed.

Can i hire a carriage at the ticket office area to the Treasury
Written 13 October 2018
Not at the ticket office, once you get down just beyond it. The carriages are very close to the start of the track and they will take you to the treasury, you can also go further right to the steps to the monastery.

Is it required to be experiended in horse riding when we would go by horse?
Written 4 February 2017
You won't need to be an experienced horse rider because the locals will either walk the horse or ride alongside you. Be careful to very clearly negotiate a price for the ride AND for the tip before you start because some horse/camel/donkeycarriage operators can become intimidating at the end of your ride if they believe the tip should be bigger. It is important to be very clear about where you want to go before you get started so you aren't taken or led off the track to 'see another site'. Although some of the operators can be persistent, they will usually leave you alone if you are polite but firm. Also, the operators will be keen for you to buy a ride to the Monastery (the highest site at the very end of the track), but they often refuse to let you ride down from this point because it is more difficult for the animals to bring you back down again.
