The Siq with its narrow passage ending in front of the Treasury, is a compilation of mysterious bends and turns at the bottom of a narrow trail with huge and imposing walls on both sides! A fubuolus "mise en bouche" for the adventure of the Treasury, the Monastery or the High Place of Sacrifice. Truly awesome!

Although it is easy to absorb the natural beauty of this rock cleft, some detail may be missed, unless you have someone to point them out. You will see dams, elephant carvings, camels and attendants, and votive niches. Our guide made this a truly rewarding experience with his scholarly insights.

Wandering down the Siq at night was a bit of a challenge because of how dark it was. I suggest bringing a small flashlight. But walking thru the Siq in the daylight hours is amazing! Very romantic winding around the Siq on the way to the Treasury. So beautiful...

There are a variety of transport options, but to take in the grandeur and atmosphere you must walk in. The gateway is indeed spectacular.

Most people forget about the Siq and remember only the Treasury and the other sights - but the Siq is actually beautiful.

The siq is the entrance to Petra. It's a gorge and in itself is worth the trip. As the sun moves through the sky the sandstone walls change color and is absolutely gorgeous.

The Siq is a long natural stone passage leading into Petra. This relativelt narrow passage helped to protect Petra from outsiders. Nowadays you can walk, take a carriage if you are older or if you are young you can ride a horse. It is about 2 K in length. Along the way you pass the tomb of the obelisks, other... More

We did Petra early in the morning - one of the first people to arrive so it was fairly empty which was perfect! I highly recommend getting there at the opening to beat the crowds and the heat. It also allows you to get a good feel for the gorge and its history. (and unobstructed photos!) We had a guide... More

The Siq is a gorge cut though the living rock by earthquakes, wind and water over a period of time. The variety of rocks faces and their colours will keep you occupied during the walk to the Treasury, together with buildings cut into the rocks along the way. Well worth the walk

When you cross the Entrance, navigate the camels, donkeys and buggy rides offered ad nauseum, you explore the Siq, Petra's Main Street before the Treasury unfolds before your eyes. However, be sure and pay attention to the Siq as you will discover the ancient history of the site simply by looking at the carvings. Look closely at the markings and... More
