Its unique and eclectic design is a mix from the Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Syrian architectural elements. It's best to see it in the early hours to avoid the crowds. There will be Bedouins trying to get you to take pictures with the camels and guide you to one of the picture spot hikes.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 23 October 2023
- LolaGo1Washington DC, District of Columbia6,632 contributionsFinally, I saw it!I first saw it on Day 1 of my visit of Petra. Used my 2-day Jordan Pass for this visit. On Day 2 of my visit, I saw it again when I started my walk/hike at the Little Petra. The Treasury is the most intact of all the ancient buildings located in Petra. Closed #2 is the Monastery. From the Visitor Center, one can walk, ride the camel, or ride the electric cart to reach this attraction. I passed by the huge, beautiful boulders and canyons. Took lots of pictures here!Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 2 November 2023

It is one of the most elaborate rock-cut tombs in Petra, a city of the Nabatean Kingdom inhabited by the Arabs in ancient times. The most visited place in Wadi Musa. You need to walk 600 meters on sand followed by 1200 meters on carved stones to reach to Al Khazneh through Al Siq. You can take a camel ride there for JD 5 for one round and photos. Many cafes and souvenir stores.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 August 2024

Al-Khazneh was originally built as a mausoleum and crypt at the beginning of the 1st century AD during the reign of Aretas IV Philopatris. Its Arabic name Treasury derives from one legend that bandits hid their loot in a stone urn high on the second level. Another legend is that it functioned as a treasury of the Egyptian Pharaoh at the time of Moses. The treasury was carved and sculpted from the cliff. The sculptures are thought to be those of various mythological figures associated with the afterlife such as the four eagles on top. The eagles would carry away the souls. The figures on the upper level are dancing Amazons with double-axes. The entrance is flanked by statues of the twins Castor and Pollux who lived partly on Olympus and partly in the underworld.
From its origins as a fortress city, Petra became a wealthy commercial crossroads between the Arabian, Assyrian, Egyptian, Greek and Roman cultures. Control of this crucial trade route between the upland areas of Jordan, the Red Sea, Damascus and southern Arabia was the lifeblood of the Nabatean Empire and brought Petra its fortune. The riches the Nabateans accrued allowed them to carve monumental temples, tombs and administrative centers out of their valley stronghold.
The city of Petra was rediscovered in 1812 by Swiss explorer Johann Buckhardt. Tourism started 100 years ago on a small scale. It was the 1989 movie Indiana Jones which caused a massive surge in popularity for Petra. Nowadays, tourism and visiting Petra in particular has become Jordan’s main source of income.
This legendary place is not that easy to get to. It is a long drive from Amman and a long walk from the main town of Petra.

The Treasury ( which is in Khazneh in Arabic) was thought to be where the Nabateans kets there treasures. It is carved out in sandstone and seems to have survived the elements much better than anything else in this centuries old nabatean village. This is a 2Km ( 45 Mins ) walk from the entrance on uneven pavement. One can also take a horse ride, a buggy ( 2 people), or a electric cart ( 5 people) . There is another 2 km beyond this to see the other parts of the village

After walking through 1.2 km Siq, the first sighting of the treasury or Al Khazneh leaves you stunned with its grand magnificence. Carved out of pink sandstone, this intricately sculpted 40 metre tall building is fabled to contain a pharaoh's treasure. The beautiful facade is doubtless the best sight in Petra!

No big introductions are needed for this amazing archaeological site.
After the long walk before and during the Siq, seeing the Treasury appear in front of you literally takes your breath away.
I recommend arriving at the Treasury no later than 8:00 in the morning, to avoid the crowds of tourists and Bedouins looking for customers who pour into the space as early as 9:00/10:00. So it's best to leave no later than 7:00 from the ticket office. At this time the temperature is still excellent even in August, and the silence is total.
To take perfect photos, however, you have to wait until at least 9:00. In August between 9:00 and 11:00 the light on the Treasury is at its best. Before 9:00 the facade is not yet illuminated, but around this time the sun begins to bathe the facade in gold and the show is truly incredible.
However, I advise against arriving in the afternoon because the sun turns behind the Treasury and you end up taking photos against the light.
Also recommended is Petra by Night, a very fascinating and unusual experience, with a fascinating archaeological site illuminated by torches and the colored lights of the musical show. Really nice!

Petra is a tough climb over rough stone staircase, spread out over 4 km walk.It consists of various edifices-treasury or khazaneh is where the dead were buried, along with their treasures, food and clothing. There is an interesting sound and light show in the evenings and one can spend the night or watch the sunset from the top.
The other monuments include the marketplace, where trade happened. The travellers were given shelter, food near the entrance, where small alcoves stand testimony to their foresight in planning water supply And maximising natural light. There was an area dedicated to sheltering camels and horses used as transportation mode.
There are various temples dedicated to various gods,as well as a church, granaries to stock food, wells for storing water supply as well as specific quarters for the ruler and royals.
Donkeys are employed for the steep climb ,leading to the temple ,situated at the top.Fortunately, there is a cafe close to it where tourists can rest and have some Kavah,Arabic food or plain tea brewed over coal. There are various small trinkets, artifact shops all along the way. There are no public conveniences like rest areas or toilets along the climb.
It’s
a glimpse into the past mysteries and the nomad’s mastery ,in harnessing natural resources to fulfill their need for shelter from strong winds, rains and plunderers.

The Treasury is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985 and was voted one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Even the movie "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" shows "The Treasury" in part of the story. "The Treasury" is just one section of many in Petra. Through the narrow gorge of Siq, we saw this extraordinary sandstone rock facade architecture. We were just amazed at how people in ancient time could make such a majestic structure. We were glad that we had the opportunity to explore last November.Happy Travelling!

It seems like many people go to Petra just to take pictures of this monument. It is very iconic. It's also the first thing you see when you enter the ancient city itself. It's absolutely worth the hype, but I wouldn't get too caught up in it. I saw plenty of people who spent way too much time here, then ended up too wiped out or too short on time really dig in to Petra.

Clearly this is the most iconic image of Jordan and fame sure is well deserved. It is simply magnificent and breathtaking.
Make sure you come early enough so you have the place relatively empty so you can enjoy because once the tour groups arrive you just want to run away...they open the gate at 6AM so feel free to come as early as possible. We came at 7AM and it was very nice and empty enough.
There is a place to buy drinks, tea, water and interestingly enough water costs 1JD and tea costs 2JD.
There is a path to climb the rocks and get an aerial shot, facing the treasury, head right and head to the wall (not the one facing the treasury but the one on the side). You will see a trail heading up and it is kind of easy climb but it not exactly a trail or path but the view is amazing

A UNESCO World Heritage Site. The is the most iconic image of Petra and of Jordan. It is one thing to see in pictures and movies and quite another to be standing in front of it. One of the seven wonders of the world. We only had one day here and I wish we had at least one more. There are horse drawn carriages available and in front of Al-Khazneh are locals with camels. For a small price you can pose on them for a photo of a lifetime.

Unmissable experience on a trip to Jordan. If you are short on time during the tour, you can opt for the Main Trail only which includes the parts that are considered main in the Petra site. We traveled it with a guide who I recommend because it helps you better understand what you are visiting.

He’s right. This is a NO MISS site. Must be visited. Peddlers selling their wares but no beggars and super friendly people. You need tickets to get in, so...people are workers or legit,

Just an interesting note. We are getting ready to travel to Petra later this year so I am doing a ton of research. I read about your experience with the young boys threatening you. Did you see Park Rangers? I found documentation that the US Park Service has set up their guidelines for Petra and it up like the US National Parks. I am just thinking that maybe people need to report them and complain more about them. It is a tragedy that this goes on but I hate bullies and tend to want to try to do what I can to make it better for the next people.

This wasn’t me talking about young boys being threatening. Yes they bother you to sell stuff but there in no way threatening. It’s been a great experience.

How much is the ticket to Petra? Also, how can we get to Petra from Aqaba using public transport.
Many thanks

I would recommend renting a car and traveling by car in Jordan. It’s much easier and safe. Enjoy your trip. Also make sure to catch Petra by Night. Amazing experience!

I only have 24hrs in Jordan. My flight arrives at 8 am what is the best and most cost effective way to and from Petra from Amman?
Written 28 February 2018
Hi!
The trip from Amman to Petra and back takes at least 12 hours, which is very demanding and exhausting. This will allow you to see only some portions of Petra, including the Siq, The Treasury, the highlight of the trip and The Court.
If you are ready to take the trip, I can recommend a very knowledgeble driver. He took us from the hotel to Petra and back in his comfortable and new mini van. We paid him around 130 Jordanian dinars. Since he was very nice with us during our 4 -day Trip in Jordan, we gave him a tip.
Good luck!

Is there a trail map on how to get to the high trails that look down on the treasury? I've seen several photos from pin high but all the maps keep you to the standard tourist trails on the valley floor.
Written 21 October 2017
superpear,
I cannot provide you with a trail map, but the trail uphill to the treasury viewpoint from above starts right after Palace tomb. It's called al-Khubtah rail and from experience of previous travelers it takes 40-45 min one way. It seems it is well marked and doable without a guide.
eventually you reach a tent (probably a tea-shop) and take the path downhill on the left hand side of the tent.
There has been a detailed post on TA forum but somehow I cannot paste the link here. Search for it and it will be even clearer.

Hello dear fellow travelers,
I am planning to visit Petra in November. While I have found detailed info regarding access to the view of Treasury from above via the al-Khubtha trail starting from the royal tombs, I also came to know that there is another viewpoint accessible via the Madras trail which is more difficult and guide is recommended. My question is the following:
if the second view point is easily accessible (well marked) from the High Place of Sacrifice and if it is doable without a guide. How long will it approximately take for a hike from the High place to the view of treasury from above and back? I am a 24 year old and would like to do it on my own to keep the cost low.
Any information will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

P.S- I am quite new to such posting activities, hence pardon me if anything is against the rules of the forum.

I have only done a guided trip where we camped in the desert behind Petra and then entered through the city's back door, avoiding the crowds and having to do only downhill from then on. The trail is not super well marked but very easy to walk. I highly recommend it.

Hi
we are going in May to Petra for a few days and do have tours booked. I am really interested in doing a short camel ride at the treasury. Did you arrange the ride prior to going to Petra? If so, whom do you contact. Or did you just arrange it that day.
Any information you can provide would be helpful
thanks
Written 23 March 2017
You can arrange camel rides locally. However I would strongly recommend against it. The sites worth seeing can only be reached by climbing stairs, which the camels can't do, so you'll be seeing the same area you would see by foot. On top of that, the animals in Petra are not treated kindly by the beduin group that "manages" Petra. If you would really like to ride a camel, It would be better to do it elsewhere, for example in Wadi Rum. Also, be advised, riding a camel is not very comfortable, so book a short tour (half an hour to an hour is more than enough).

Dear everybody,
Indiana Jones Trail Riding tour in Petra / Jordania
I would like to ask,
1.-which skill one must have to join the Indiana jones trail riding tour
2.- is it recommendable to join the riding tour
regards
christian

As I have not heard of the Indiana Jones Trail Ride, I am sorry I cannot answer that question either.
If it is just round the site then probably not strong skills as it is an easy site but further afield, not sure level.
