Takes about an hour to get up to the Monastery - one and half hour round trip. Nice climb. wear sturdy shoes as the steps are worn in certain sections. The locals will sell you a donkey/mule ride to the top for 15 or 20JD. But I saw several hikers who appeared to be in their sixties doing this. Take... More

The monastery is a monument that demands to be seen and you feel very,. very small in front of it. The urne on top of the monument looks small but we were told it stands 10 meters high! It's another incredible monument in the Petra region that fills you with awe and respect... Another must see!

We where unsure about climbing to te monastery, my parents are 58 years old but in good shape and they decided to go... we passed on all the donkey and camel rides offerings... the walk gives you a sense of achievement and makes you enjoy even more the place

This was my second visit to Petra, could only go uptil Treasury first time. I think the best time to go to Petra is winter season as summer is too hot to deal with. Though honestly speaking if you have seen Treasury, monestery is jsut another place like Treasury. If you are short of time, just visit Treasury, theater and... More

A tiring hike, but not as bad as some have described. Get up early so you could have it to yourself for the perfect photo!

The monastery is deep within Petra so be prepared for a long walk. After the walk you have to climb up approx 870 steps to get to the monastery. It's not easy to get to but it's worth it if you're able.

The Monastery also called the Deir is perhaps the most impressive building at Petra and sits high atop a mountain. The front is 160 feet wide and 127 feet high. This was both a ceremonial place and a King's tomb. It is believed to have been built by the Nabateans in the first century BC. Like the Treasury it follows... More

Like many others on here, I would say it was worth the hike but it is very hot and it is difficult. It takes a few hours to do the round trip walk. One person indicated that their driver dropped them off at the top and then picked them up from the main entrance. Means you don't get to the... More

This is a good hike to do in the morning before it gets too warm. Over 800 steps - none of them regular - but it's part of the charm. The monastery is much larger than the Treasury but less ornate - plenty to explore at the top. Great views and photo ops. There is a small stand for a... More

The hike up to the monastery was a rewarding and enjoyable experience but challenging and moderately difficult on a typical strenuous scale. The views from the top - of the scenery and the monastery itself - are worth the trip. Mules are available to take you up and/or down if help is needed or desired.
