Many islands, small to large, in various shapes, some with caves, are there. In addition, there are many gulls and black-tailed gulls (in Japan black-tailed gull is called Umineko – sea cat – as its cry resembles that of a cat) flying over. Feeding a Umineko is recently prohibited, as its feces damage pine trees.

If nearby you MUST take this boat trip. The scenery is unbelievable beautiful and it honestly feels like you are in a film set. Worth every single yen

The pleasure boat will take you to some of the most breathtaking rock formations that are entirely made by nature and national treasury. Bit of advice for those with a light stomach, part of the route is in the oute bay area and you will expirience larger waves even on a nice and sunny day so better not eat before... More

Pleasure boat from Shiogama to Matsushima is really nice. Got to take numerous photos of a lot of islands and outcroppings. Get an English map at the port to keep track of the boat ride. Matsushima seemed to have a lot of other tourist attractions. Take the ride early as crowds formed very quickly after 11AM.

We drove to Matsushima. Parking was 300Y per hour (no max). The ticket office is right on the docks and there are two boats. One is a ferry to another town (the ticket is one way so for a round trip you have to purchase the return from the other side) and this is a round trip cruise that takes... More

Lovely cruise through the Matsushima Bay. The boat has seating both inside and outside. We stayed inside because it was so cold. There is prerecorded narration in Japanese and English about many of the small islands and outcrops. It is a pleasant way to learn a little about the history and industry of the region.

Overall the boat ride was pretty good, as you get to see a lot of the small islands and rocky outcrops close by. I would have given it a 4/5 if it wasn't for the pushy staff at the Information centre. They seemed to have pushed me to go on this particular boat even though I wanted another one. They... More

I read another review that it is important to get a window seat so that you could take good photos and that some people ended up sleeping in the cruise. So I heeded the advice and bought my tickets early, queued up at the pier early in the blazing hot sun and got a nice window seat. The cruise started... More

Matsushima island belongs to the Matsushima National Park. The name comes from: Matsu = Pine and shima = island. People use to say there are one thousand islands. In fact is less than half thousand. There are islands big enough where several families live there. Some others are only rocks. Last tsunami destroyed some of these rocks. In an effort to... More
