We hiked up to the top of the volcano. We got directions from the tourist association at Lake Akan. This was a really tough hike. It is easy to follow as there are loads of red ribbons marking the route, and then red marks painted...More

According to the hiking map we obtained from the Eco Center in Lake Akan, there are 3 different courses to conquer this summit. The one we choose starting from Nakano Onsen (25 mins drive from Lake Akan) is described as a 2.5 hour steep uphill...More

This is one of the best hikes in Hokkaido - wonderful. But give yourself 4-4.5 hrs to do the loop. And pick your weather window well - you want good visibility on the top! Didn't see any bears just fabulous views of the crater and...More

Great views, many different types of landscape. We took the Me-akan-Onsen trail in both directions. It's not an easy hike, wether uphill or downhill. Almost 900 meters in height on just about 3.5 km trail (one way). But the effort pays out.

I can't see anywhere to review Oakandake, so I'm putting my review here. We had an amazing hike up this monster of a volcano but it was hard work and took us (two 40 somethings and an 11 year old) 4 hours to reach the...More

This is one of the best hikes for volcano lovers - not only for them! Meakan-dake climb will take you about 4 to 5 hours, and is amazingly diverse: you start in an old pine forest and feel like a hobbit among huge roots of...More

We did this hike based on the Lonely Planet description of this as an easy hike. We have done hikes all over the world and I would not describe this as easy or for novices. The trail is well marked, but not maintained at all....More

There are 3 routes going to the top of the volcano. The easiest starts at Meakan-Spa (17 km from Akan-Ko, south west). The path starts hundred meters before the parking, left on the road. There are then some signs which say to take care in...More
