Nicely maintained war memorial. One time, but must visit if travelling to Dharamshala. Small entry fee of Rs. 10. Amidst of tall trees, a very calm and peaceful park.

The Memorial was built to commemorate the memory of the soldiers of Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh who fought bravely and sacrificed their lives for the country while guarding the country in the Post Independence era. Lot of thought has been put into its creation. The focal attention of the memorial is its three large curved walls in black marble, each 24 feet high. The names of 1042 braveheart martyrs who laid down their lives while guarding the motherland during the war or warlike operations of 1947-48, 1962, 1965 ,1971 and during various other peacekeeping missions are inscribed on these walls on five of its faces. Rising from a circular shallow pool with 21 water jets the walls represent the three wings of the Indian Armed Forces. Their curved shape indicates the continuity and the fact that these great soldiers will remain immortal in the minds of Indians forever. A mural painted on one of the walls symbolizes the spirit of national freedom. It shows a stout arm holding aloft the flame showing how the brave soldiers of the country are making determined efforts to keep it ever high and burning even at the cost of their lives so that the citizens may be able to live freely. The garlands and medals around them represent our gratitude to them.

The War memorial, locally known as Shaheed Smarak, is situated at the slopes of beautiful valley just off the highway on Kachehri Road at the the entrance to city of Dharamshala as we are about to reach Dharamshala from the national highway (NH154) or from Kangra (Gaggal) airport. Distance from the airport is 11 kms. and is located at about three kms. before reaching Inter State Bus Terminal of Dharamshala. Place is nestled amidst the tall pine trees and dense forest. Main memorial is surrounded by beautifully lanscaped garden, tall pine trees, nice little paths and trails all around. The memorial is spread over 7 acres. The foundation stone of the memorial was laid in February 1972 by then Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh and the memorial was inaugurated by Shanta Kumar, former Chief Minister of the state, on 28 September 1977. An expenditure of Rs 18 lakh was incurred on its construction. Entrance fee of Rs.10 per person above 5 years of age is charged. Vehicle is charged Rs.10 to Rs.40 depending on its type. Timing is from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. as per the sign board at the entrance. Government Post Graduate College Dharamshala, established in 1926, is situated near the memorial. This is a spacious and historical building complex. There is also a café just close to the Memorial which serves fast food and beverages.

There is a very big map of India inside the memorial. It is made up of rounded stones and each state is indicated by differently colored stones. Other attractions include a Children Park and open auditorium. Many benches are placed inside the memorial. There is a small exhibit of the prototypes of weapons used by the Indian Defense Services. These include a Patton Tank, a 25 Pdn Gun, a Ship (Virrat) and a Gnat Aircraft. This place offers a nice and pleasant walk through the woods once you have given your salutes and tribute to the martyrs. Annual event is generally organised at the Memorial on 16th December to celebrate the Vijay (Victory) Diwas (Day) where floral tributes are paid to commemorate the contribution of armed forces in 1971 India-Pakistan war. Display of army weapons and equipments is also sometimes organised at the Memorial during this celebration with the aim of motivating the youth and young children.

One India-Pak cricket match during ICC T20 World Cup scheduled to be played at Dharamsala on 19 March 2016 was shifted to Kolkata. This was done in view of the adverse sentiments expressed by local people and the family members of the martyrs over holding the match here whereby the Pakistan Cricket team would have played under the shadow of the Memorial which is very close to the HPCA stadium.

People visit the memorial to pay homage to the brave soldiers who protect the borders despite facing various odds. The War Memorial is one such place where Lord Byron's words "In solitude, where we are least alone" come alive. It is so well designed that amidst the whispering of pines we could feel hearing the martyrs saying: "When you go home, tell them of us and say, For your tomorrow, we gave our today." The sacrifices of soldiers are often forgotten in popular media. Revered monuments such as these remind and inspire us to remember them and keep fighting the good fight. A visit to the Dharmasala War Memorial can certainly boost up the patriotic feelings.

This War Memorial is a beautiful tribute to the war heroes. Set amidst beautiful scenic surroundings and dense Pine forest, the memorial is just set at the entrance of Dharamsala to honor the sacrifice made by the war heroes of Himachal Pradesh on the Post Independence war fronts. The panels of black marble have the names inscribed on it of those martyrs who lost their life guarding the motherland. The operations of 1947-48, 1962, 1965, and 1971 and in various peacekeeping missions saw many of the soldiers fighting bravely for their country and not returning home. Some old tanks, guns and a small fighter plane is displayed there. Lots of photo opportunities, a good family picnic place. A visit to this memorial is a must to get the feel of patriotism while standing at the War Memorial of such brave souls.

Dharamshala war memorial is in the open and the concept of a memorial in a garden is very refreshing. A beautifully laid gardens with fountains and flowers and the memorial right in the centre is nicely done. The place is very calm and quiet. It is few yards away from HPCA Stadium. One can park the car outside the memorial gate and buy your parking tkt and entrance ticket. For 4 persons it was Rs60/- including car parking. From parking the entrace gate is few steps and easy to approach. One must visit this on a sunny winter afternoon and enjoy the beauty of the gardens sitting on the benches under the shade of trees!
