This is a must visit place as well, in Hampi. As the name suggests, it is dedicated to Lord Ram and hence, it has many carving depicting stories from Ramayana. The carvings are really beautiful. If you go in the evening, the temple just glows in the evening golden light

The temple was build during Vijayanagar Empire and has a marvelous architecture. Hazara Rama Temple has carvings from Ramayana and that's where the name comes from. It is the only temple nearby the Royal Enclosure and it is believed to be the the temple where Royal people used to worship.

1. This is one of the left structures and is beautiful. It has carvings which depict Ramayana episodes.
2. You should take a guide who can inform you about the carvings on the walls.
3. Once you buy a ticket, you can visit all the structures of the Hampi for a day.
4. It was a temple for Kings and their royal family.

Hazara Rama Temple is a beautiful temple located at the center of Royal Enclosure. The temple is dedicated to Lord Rama.
Hazara Rama Temple was built in the early part of the 15th century by Devaraya II. The term Hazara Rama literally means a thousand Rama and refers to the large number of Ramayana panels depicted on the walls. This temple is believed to be the private temple of the kings and the royal family of Vijayanagara..

An extraordinary outlook of the walls distinguish Hazara Rama temple from other structures in Hampi the capital of Vijayanagara Empire. Its external walls are decorated wonderfully. We see multitudes of stone panels bearing pictures from Ramayana on walls. If you count, if possible, they may sum upto one thousand. That is why it is named as Hazara Rama (a thousand Rama) Temple. There is a big courtyard, termed as “Hazara” (Big hall) and it may also be a reason to call Hazara Rama. Whatever may be the cause but it is a great contribution of Vijayanagara kings for encouraging and patronaging of art and culture of our country.
I know by studying the inscriptions on inside walls that Devaraya I erected this shrine to Lord Ramachandra during 15th century. It is in the heart of Royal Centre. It was used as a private temple confined to royal family members. Inner walls portray processions of elephants, horses with attendants, military contingents and dancing damsels. Gateways look like pavilion on the east and north that give access to temple.
The ruins also reveal processions of horses, elephants, attendants, soldiers and dancing women taking part in the Dasara festival in those days. Any circuit you chalk out here would take you across this temple in one way or other. For your guidance there is a signboard in front of the temple, across the path that directs you to ‘Pan Supari’ (Beatle nut) Bazaar. This sloping track from temple courtyard would pass through a group of structures, associated shrines, pavilions and lampposts, which decorate the main passage to temple. When we proceed further for a little distance we reach the sunken Pattanada Yellamma Temple and Ranga Temple. Another route from Danaik’s Enclosure and Underground Shiva Temple will link this lane at its northeastern corner.
Sanctum is empty. (Empty vessel makes much sound/noise). I could see three holes in empty pedestal, evidencing removal or destruction of idols of Rama, Lakshmana and Seetha. The basement wall is decked with finely set mouldings and overhung by curving caves. Peculiar, it is to see, a brick plaster tower raised on sanctuary, where its original details are buried by modern restoration.
A small structure similar to main temple with epic wall carvings is seen closely. It is wonderful to see rare depictions of Vishnu as Buddha on the wall of sanctum. There are two sanctuaries, apparently for Narasimha and Vishnu as can be gathered from the story, of this incarnation where Vishnu also appears on outer walls. Idols of Hanuman or Garuda are seen in front side.
The ancient engineering skill is exposed in linking roads in this area. A road from here leads to structures of other gods and proceeds through Royal Centre into Urban Core, which ultimately ends at Talarighat gate leading to Anegondi before crossing the river. Ramayana is carved on stone walls of the temple in a narrative form. The delicate carvings of Vishnu are displayed on pillars.
Hazara Rama Temple is in Royal Enclosure of Hampi. It is a spot which every tourist would visit. It may not be easy to reach Hampi by air though nearest airport is at Bellary. There are other modes of transport to reach Hampi. The railway station is Hospet from where we can easily reach by frequent buses. There are other local means of transport to reach Hampi from Hospet.
Hampi is connected to several cities by road network. There are KSRTC, private and tourist operators to take us from Bangalore or Mysore and other cities. There are number of hotels and lodges to stay and for food.

Relatively well preserved temple dedicated to Lord Ram. Named after the appearance of Ram on all panels on the walls, each of which depicts a scene from the Ramayan. One can only imagine the detailed efforts that must have gone into the creation.

The Hazara Rama Temple or Ramachandra Temple had a close relationship between the God housed in the Temple and the Vijayanagar King. This temple is in the close proximity of the Royal Center at Hampi and was probably the private worship of the King.
The temple enclosure walls on the outer face have details of royal processions. The first row (bottom) depicts a long procession of elephants. Second row a procession of horses led by grooms. The third row represents a large variety of military and martial arts display. Fourth row shows royal feminine entourage dancing, singing and playing musical instruments. Fifth row (top) scenes of music and dancing, garden scenes and festivities including the spring festival of Holi. Note the use of water squirts to hold the colored water.
The walls of the principal shrine has the panels of Ramayana. The walls and columns of the shrines are profusely decorated with gods and goddess and beautiful rock cut designs.
In the middle of the courtyard is the principal shrine of the temple. The porches of the mandapas are aligned with the northern and eastern gateways. There is minor shrine to the north and slightly to the west of the principal shrine. This appears to be a later addition.
This temple of Ramachandra is beautiful and magnificent and shows the glorious knowledge of the times !!
