This attraction is a facsimile of the real caves a few yards away but have been created to save the original one. It feels like a cave and depicts everything found in the real one.

The cave became known prehistoric paintings on the walls and discovered by a hunter's daughter in 1868. It can be reached on foot in Santillana del Mar, it is a pleasant walk 2 kilometers during which you can admire nature. The cave is a delight by figures painted prehistoric cave. But ... you must kow: you will see a "reproduction"... More

My first visit to the Caves was in 1972. The Museum is OK but lacks a lot in resembling the actual Caves. The hike up from the town was bucolic and pretty. I wished the Museum had been better. The thrill for me was going to the old cave opening (that is now prohibited entry) and having good memories of... More

Being able to see the exact paintings and cave replications is awesome. Terrible staff would not let licensed guide talk with us about what we were seeing. Additionally the man stalked us through the gift shop and all the while we were in the museum. Go early in day to avoid crowds.

I almost didn't come when I realised you can't visit the real cave which is closed off the protect the real paintings. However the purpose built cave is excellent, the ceiling really does demonstrate what the paintings are like and I learned a lot - the paintings are bigger than I thought and they use the shape of the cave... Altamira was considered a hoax when it was first discovered in 1880. It is now known to contain some of the finest examples of Paleolithic Art. I highly recommend this cave reproduction. I was traveling with one person who needed a cane to get around and he had no trouble navigating. This is one of the advantages of a reproduction.

The Altamira Museum is a short drive from the town of Santillana Del Mar. The museum contains a replica of cave drawing and an extensive prehistory museum. The cave drawings are interesting in that they show how the artists from 16,000 years ago used natural pigments and the shapes of rock outcroppings and cracks in the caves as part of... More

Although the real cave is closed, the facsimile is fascinating. Best to take a tour so you see all the magnificent paintings. The museum itself is very informative. One can walk from the town..about 40 minutes.

We understand the reasons for not allowing crowds of people in the real cave but found this mock-up totally lacking in atmosphere and very very fake looking - could have looked at the paintings on line!

great walk-through about the history, discovery and the lives of the people and lots of anticipation for your time slot to see the replica cave. somehow it didn't feel as mysterious or legendary after knowing this is a replica. you wouldn't stay there long either, basically spam all the photos you want and then leave. (maybe in there about 15mins?)... More
