Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It would be, it should be said, an interesting historical site. The walls are meant. The interior is covered with vegetation, also interesting, but little valued. There is nothing to remember the historical use of this site, now occupied by a hotel. The photos show the view from the sea of the wall, but avoid highlighting the horrible background with the seaside tourist buildings that literally suffocated both the Fortaleza and distorted the old village of Baiona.
Getting there from Vigo, required crossing the so-called crowded center of seaside tourists.

What a fantastic place, we have been there twice in a short time, we were so enthusiastic after the first time that we wanted to show it to our son and daughter-in-law a week later, they were also impressed. We started with the sea level walk around the fort, the views are absolutely fantastic and the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks...Awesome. Beautiful photo moments. Take the time to sit on a bench/wall every now and then and quietly absorb all the impressions, it will make you wonderfully relaxed. Just got an ice cream and then up the wall, the first part is a tough climb but otherwise it's not too bad. Here again the beautiful view, now on a different level, is also a different experience. When we are in Galicia again we will definitely visit this place again. PS I read in some reviews that you have to pay to visit the fort, but this will no longer be the case in 2024.

When i seen this from a distance, standing in all its majesty, i could not believe i was staying here. I was blown away with the grandness of the entrance, never mine I hadn't even got up to the hotel. Our room was amazing, with a sea view, gorgeous writing bureau in the room and armchairs. Lushious bathroom, 2 sinks, bidet, toilets, large shower. Thought I had died and gone to heaven. All staff were very pleasant. Food was excellent. We walked around the battlements before dinner, and the views were breath taking. This is a must in your lifetime. There is a gorgeous balcony to sit on to have drinks for dinner. We were able to have breakfast out on the lovely sunny balcony in the morning. Best I have ever been to. Totally amazing, and unforgettable.

When arriving in Baiona, drive to the “Tourist Office”, park the car in the car-park below it and you can start your sightseeing tour of Baiona. The “Fortaleza de Monterreal” is located on the peninsula of “Monte Boi”, also known as “Monterreal”. This location has been known for more than 2,000 years and this as a walled enclosure. Centuries before the birth of Christ, different peoples inhabited it, among them, Celts, Phoenicians and Romans. The peninsula occupies an area of about 18 hectares surrounded by 3 km. of crenellated walls dating from between the 11th and 17th century. The wall maintains the three towers from which the fortress was guarded. At the entrance is the Clock Tower (which hid a bell that served to give the alarm in case of enemy attack); To the east stands the Torre de la Tenaza, whose mission was to defend the port by shooting batteries and, in the easternmost part of the fortress, over the bay, is the Prince's Tower, perhaps the oldest, which acted as lighthouse for ships.
The fortress can be visited any day of the year. You can walk also arround the fortress by the “Passeo de Ribeira” a walk from about 3 km, but worth every meter.
Visit Hours: 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Price: € 1 on foot / € 5 with vehicle
We only have done the walk around the fortress.

First off I didn’t go in side the fort I just walked around the exterior of the fourth which was at no charge. To get in the Fort apparently cost one euro. Unfortunately there’s no ticket booth or anything like that it just looks like some panhandler looking for money from people which I felt was a little dicey at the time come to find out the guy was legit. The view from the outside along the base of walls is quite spectacular you get to see the surrounding islands.

The walk along the top of the wall is excellent, now on the grounds of the Parador Hotel. They charge €1 in the summer. We didn't see anyone collecting a fee in the fall. The walk along the bottom is just as good but with slightly less visual impact. Take a camera, you'll want to take pictures over Baiona.

Some of the reviews here are confusing. That is because what was once an ancient fort is now a luxury hotel called the Parador. We are staying there and it is wonderful. But imagine that all the walls, towers, turrets and amazing walks and settings around where the fort was, are open to the public and free. It is still beautiful and absolutely worth the trip and walk. It’s a 10-12 minute walk from the village of Baiona where you will find shops and very nice taverns. You could explore the grounds here for an hour or two. I believe there is also a paid tour, but we did not do it. Must visit!

The walls of this fort now surround the Parador Hotel but the grounds and wall are accessible to tourists. The walls date from the 11th to 17th centuries being added to and renewed over that period. It's a pleasant walk around the well maintained walls with views of the harbour, seashore and the town of Baiona. The walk can take ten minutes or up to a couple of hours depending on how far one wishes to walk and how much time one spends admiring or contemplating the scenery. On the 1st March 1493 Columbus arrived first at this port on his return from discovering America. A replica of the Pinta, one of the three ships that accompanied Columbus on his voyage to the New World is on display in the docks near the fort. With this historic link, a walk around the walls causes one to ponder on the deeds of explorers like Columbus who sailed into this quiet Spanish town after his epic voyage.
