The place reflects the memories of Rabindranath Tagore. It is a large area and the exterior is well planned and constructed. The interior has lots of pictures of the poet. It is a good place for a day long visit.

A well maintained heritage site. Despite the small numbers of items available for display, the place gives an uncanny but wonderful feeling of the master's presence. There is a nice guest house next door for a night stay. This, I understand can be booked through the Zila Parishad office at Kushtia. I will request the Govts of Bangladesh and India to make a joint initiative of Tagore trail covering Shilaidaha, Jorasanko and Santiniketan where the "payer chinha" of the great Nobel laureate fell.

The place is more historical rather than its structural elegance. Tagore stayed here and composed many of his poems, songs, novels. He loved to have boating on river Padma, from where he got refreshed to write many of the best creations of world's literature.
The riverside view is awesome on afternoon.
Don't miss the taste of local hand made ice-cream from milk and cream, locally known as "Kulfi" at just 50 cents (USD). I'm pretty sure you will taste it again.

We visited the Kuthibari last Sunday. But Sunday is the official holiday of that establishment. So we could see the place from outside only. The kuthibari is kept immaculate and well maintained, the garden is Mau
Intatained properly. A replica of the boat used by Gurudev is kept. The complex is having paid toilets, they are clean. You can buy mementos from shops nearby of it. You will get tea and light snacks there.

To me it was a pilgrimage. I had left India almost 35 years ago. My husband is White American and does not speak any Bengali. Although he read Geetanjali and saw a few Ray's movies, it was not his pilgrimage. It was all mine and he was patient like he has always been in our life. From Kusthia town we took an auto rickshaw to go to the river Padma, walked across it because there was no water. There is a bridge made by bamboo and boats. We paid Rs 6 per person each way. On the other side we took another shared auto rickshaw and landed in front of the house after passing through quite a few villages. It was obviously an affluent house and is relatively well kept. Inside, none of the paintings or written materials are original but the furniture are. Of course the house itself tells a lot of stories to all of us who grew up with Tagore's works in their every day life. Outside, the garden is peaceful as long as some kids do not play games but they will. We sat on a bench near the pond where there is a replica of his boat. I was listening to his songs in my ipod and thinking this is where Tagore and Kadambari Devi walked around planning their garden. It was an amazing experience. I wish they actually enforce the rule of no photography and install real toilets.

I understand now why Shonar Bangla, Kushtia still has this charm which attracted Kobiguru to play with words and come out with Gem of poems. Though the place needs lot of attention but the surroundings will make you appreciate nature and it will have a profound effect in your mind wouldn't mind staying here forever as it so peaceful and stimulator of positive feelings.

Let the auspicious moment of birth reveal itself once again
In the novelty of a new dawn.
Promulgate your presence
Displacing the hazy mist of the morning
Like the glowing sun.
Shattering this infirmity, this paucity
Manifest yourself in all you magnificence
Rejuvenate us with the elixir of life.
Let the eternal wonderous spell of yours be upon us.
Sound of your cornet from the horizon calls upon the undying spirit from the core of my heart.
In the novelty of a new dawn…
Let the auspicious moment of birth reveal itself once again.
A few days before the auspicious occasion of Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary, presenting a glimpse of his country house at Shelaidaha, on the banks of the Padma, now in Kushtia, Bangladesh. It was in this house or Kuthibari, while engaged in the management of his family estate, Rabindranath composed many of his unforgettable literary masterpieces. He used to spend days on his barge at the Padma, churning out short stories, novels, essays, poems , musical compositions and translations with unequivocal zeal. It was here, in Shelaidaha in 1912, that he started translating his Gitanjali into English, which earned him the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913. The edifice has been maintained well, but the museum inside needs better maintenance and a revamp.

Shilaidaha Kuthi Bari is a place in Kumarkhali Upazila of Kushtia District in Bangladesh. The place is famous for Kuthi Bari; a country house. Rabindranath Tagore lived a part of life here and created some of his memorable poems while living here. It is a three storied building constructed with brick, timber, corrugated tin sheets etc. The building is pyramid shaped with a terrace. The total area of the compound is 11 acres. The building is situated on right in the middle of the compound.
In 1890 Tagore started managing their family estates in Shelaidaha. He stayed there for over a decade at irregular intervals between 1891 to 1901. It is a country house build by the grand-father of Rabindranath, Prince Dwarkanath Tagore. During his stay he wrote many of his famous poems, essays and short stories there. Among those some of the masterpieces are Sonar Tari, Katha o Kahini, Chitra, Chaitali, etc. He also translated many of his creations in English there. He also wrote most of the poems from Naibedya, Kheya and many of the songs from Gitanjali and Geetimalya. It was here, in Shelaidaha in 1912, that he started translating his Gitanjali into English, which earned him the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913.
Rabindranath Tagore is the first bengali poet who got Noble Prize for literature in 1913. Rabindranath is all time fav of all bengalies. You will enjoy the surroundings as well as delight to see the belongings of the poet though many of the memories are lost and it need more careful preservations.
