Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The view over the loch is spectacular as you drive towards Plockton.

It's very busy with limited car parking but if you do get a space, grab an ice cream and sit on the harbour watching the local deer graze by the water's edge. On a warm sunny September afternoon, it's magic!

Plockton is a most beautiful village situated on a sea loch. As it faces east, it is sheltered from the prevailing winds. The view of mountains, sky, islands, water and shore evolves with the tide, the weather and the season. The walk from the railway station is about twenty minutes, slightly undulating, slightly downhill.

Plockton is very pretty, but the real place I was hoping to leave a review for is Rudha Mor Lilias's Garden, which are FREE to visit and situated down the far end of the village.

These gardens take around 45 minutes to wander around depending at the pace you'd like enjoy them, and they really do have everything - a private beach, woodland, moss covered terrain a wild flower meadow, stunning views along the loch, a view of the lighthouse. The walk is a little up and down, following a simple path in a circle, all of which only adds to the charm and mystery.

My parents and I couldn't believe that the gardens were free, we've paid far more for less loved gardens over the years! There is a donation box at the end of the walk which we were thankful for.

What an amazing 'best kept secret' Plockton has...

What a gorgeous little place this is. There is a car park, it takes either money or cards. It doesn’t cost a lot, just a few pounds and we’ll worth it, but my advice is, go before lunch as it does get very busy.
We walked through the village and sat watching the beautiful scenery, then had fish and chips at the Harbour fish bar just behind the car park. It’s mainly a takeaway, but does have a few seats inside and a couple of benches outside.

It takes an age to reach this tiny village on the single track approach road but it’s a picture-postcard vista when you do. There’s an expensive deli-style shop selling drinks and snacks, which we used as there was no café open. There is a pub in the village if you want a full meal.

Plockton is a nice very little harbour village.
Nothing too fancy.
A restaurant, an ice-cream shop, a chippy and two or three other shops.
Nice and quiet if off season.
If you are in the area and have spare time it is worth a visit.

Once been there we would probably not go again.

This is the most charming “shortbread -box” pretty village in the highlands, IMAO, as well as being a National Trust for Scotland conservation village. Which ever way you look you are rewarded with a pleasing view, as it lies on the shores of lovely Loch Carron , and is enclosed within a sheltering bay.
The many palm-trees 🌴 that grow here ( thanks to the Gulf Stream) give it a relaxed Mediterranean ambiance, whilst the village cottages are individually characterful, unique & well-cared for with delightful gardens.
There’s a choice of restaurants, cafes & shops to peruse, free parking at the harbour & public toilets. The road over to here from Kyle Of Lochalsh is slow & snaking, but a scenic experience not to be missed.

This is a beautiful fishing village towards the end of the Kyle of Lochalsh railway line (such beautiful scenery along this line!). Both of these are highly recommended in guide books. It is really lovely here and we really enjoyed our visit. There is seemingly only one train that goes up and down the line (between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh) all day and it’s just over 2 hours to Plockton, so unless you only want to spend around 20 minutes at the station and get on the train after it’s come back from Kyle, you’re there for around 4 hours. We were dropped off at 1.30pm.

This is where it starts to be a problem. We had a lovely walk around the village, taking in the beautiful views from various points, took lots of pictures and had a look in the 3 shops there. That took us till about an hour and a half before the train returned. Great, we’ll grab something local to eat: it’s a fishing village after all and by the looks of the menus on the 3/4 restaurant/inns in the village, they pride themselves on it. I’ve always wanted to try Langoustine prawns and where better. I was VERY disappointed when we realised that nowhere serves food in the times that most day-visitors show up. They serve between 12-2pm and 5.30-7.30pm – bearing in mind there is only one train up and down the line and we were dropped off at 1.30. It’s about a 10-15 minute walk if you head straight down to the village but there are also some little side walks signposted on the way down the hill that looked interesting, so everywhere was shut by the time we got into the village. They then don’t serve food again until your train is due at the station 15 minutes away.

It was quite a big disappointment not to try out the local fare and I really think they are missing a trick there! Also thank GOD for the little corner shop that WAS still open because we had only bought lunch for the train in and a few snacks for a walk (which were used) and really stuck until around 8.30 when we’d make it back to our hotel otherwise – not good for a diabetic!

I still recommend a visit but you need to be prepared foodwise until they realise that they could get a lot of happy visitors munching on their hard earned catches!

There's something about Plockton that just takes you out of your present reality and leaves you somewhere else. It's not really like becoming unstuck in time so much as place and it's not that the village is ethereal but rather that it's so solid. It's like the buildings just grew up organically from the sea shore and have always been there. Hard to explain. You'll have to experience it for yourself. I suspect it has something to do with the light which seems to emanate from far, far away and lightly illuminate the smallest details of the harbour.
Plocton Harbour bobs with small sailing boats and, out on the other side, Duncraig Castle looms over the tops of trees. One watches this scene from in front of the shops which line the main street and each of these is just as charming as the last. I did not meet a single unhappy person in Plockton and, although I'm sure there are some - perhaps even many - I can't imagine it because the place is just so serene with some of the best and brightest earth energy anywhere.
If you like shopping, there are plenty of places to indulge. If you like drinking, there are two excellent pubs right on the main street. If you want to go see seals there's the Plockton Seal Trips which take you out to the sea. I'm sure there are many other things one can do also but, for me, the best part of the harbour was just sitting quietly with a coffee watching the sun on the water and the far off ships and hearing the cry of the gulls overhead. If you're in the area, you owe it to yourself to spend some time in Plocton Harbour. It's no wonder it was chosen as the site for the the TV show Hamish Macbeth. It's so incredibly lovely. I imagine people who live there waking up every morning and just falling in love with life all over again at the sight of the sun on the water, the fresh sea breeze, and the call of the gulls.

We were excited to visit Plockton after reading several articles and reviews.

However, as we arrived in a motor home we were treated with much hostility from the locals and told we weren’t welcome in their village.

Our friends in their motor home were subjected to a similar experience from an entirely different person.

We were informed there was a sign saying no motor homes so did double back to check this, but we didn’t find it even after seeking it out.

From what we saw of Plockton I’d drive on by and visit Dornie and the magnificent Eilean Donan castle, much nicer welcome!
