Every year we spend 3 days weekend in Tyre. This year, we were a big group and Tyre was very disappointing. Owner of businesses have become very very greedy when it comes to money. Prices are so high and Everywhere you go they ask for a “relatively high” minimum charge that sometimes you don’t reach and obliged to spend anyways (restaurants, beach, drinks). Beach was very dirty and hotel asked for a regular market price but didn’t provide even proper services (like ac and internet). I bad experience all in all.

On a tour organized by the Greek Community of Beirut we were able to visit both Tyre sites with an excellent guide. I highly recommend the visits. As it is very hot either early morning or late afternoon. On the way back you should also visit les ateliers de Tyr where craftsmen and artisans produce wonderful products. Not to be missed!

Tyre is the most beautiful city in Lebanon. Despite the numerous ravages it has witnessed and still is witnessing, you will all feel the deep history of Tyre & its neighboring villages the moment you set foot there.
Its beaches look the same as the south of Spain beaches and its old town is such a jewel.
i never have enough of walking in Tyre, smelling Tyre & living Tyre.

We stayed 2 days in Tyre and visited the archeological site. Al Bass is a huge Archeological Site which took us more than 2 hours to discover. There is a old Roman road, an archway and old ornate stones with sacrophagis. The best thing we found was the hippodrome where you can very well imagine how the chariot races took place. We have seen a lot of ancient Romanian sites, but Al Bass was by far one of the most impressive for us.
Further, the city has a little souck and two sides of the sea as it is on a land tongue. The city is really worth to be visited.

Well you could say that Tyre is in itself one large archaeological site, that dates well back into prehistory. The place is covered (literally) in ruins that cover the Phoenician period, the Greek and Roman periods, the arrival and subsequent departure of the Crusaders...the list is endless. Most people would come to view the Hippodrome which is the second largest Roman chariot racing arena apparently ever discovered and where incidentally the film Ben Hur was shot and it is impressive and very cheap to enter. You should purchase the small handbook at the ticket office as this also covers the other two archaeological attractions, one is the Phoenician and Roman ruins on the 'city' site which were part of the original island city of Tyre before Alexander the Great built a causeway out to it from the mainland enabling him to put the inhabitants to the sword, and the other interesting site is the Crusader Cathederal, where the Kings of Jerusalem were crowned. For the more energetic there is spectacular snorkelling around the now submerged parts of the old city, where you can swim (often in the company of turtles) around large granite columns and along sunken streets. Tyre is a destination not to be missed when in Lebanon

Tyre (sour) is a lebanese city south of Lebanon, 80 km from Beirut (1h 30min drive).
It is one of the best places to visit in Lebanon. It has impressive ruins, located in 2 sites in the city.
El Bass is the site where the Roman hippodrome is located, it is really impressive ! The other site is just on the sea, where you can enjoy tens of roman columns and the mediterranean in the background. you could spend hours exploring the ruins if you love history and archeology.
The other attraction in Tyre is the Beach, clean beach stretching 4 km with crystal water. There are plenty of kiosques nearby where you can by drinks and food. The best one is cloud 59 located at the end.
You can also enjoy a visit to the old city of Tyre where you can wander in the streets, interact with locals...

If you like history, this place is the place to go in Lebanon with its amazing historical sites. and if you like beach, Tyre has the best beach in Lebanon, it has the rocky and it has the sandy beach and both are amazing and have lots of cafes there where you can sit and eat, drink and do activities like kayaking, run, volleyball, etc. and it is beautiful ambiance, cheap and not sophisticated.

Tyre is an ancient Phoenician city. Today it is the fourth largest city in Lebanon after Beirut, Tripoli and Sidon. The city has a number of ancient sites, including its Roman Hippodrome which was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1979.
Tyre was founded around 2750 BC according to Herodotus and was originally built as a walled city upon the mainland.
The city of Tyre was particularly known for the production of a rare and extraordinarily expensive sort of purple dye, produced from the murex shellfish, known as Tyrian purple.
There is the famous "Arch of Hadrian" and one of the best hippodromes in the region were constructed during the Roman empire.
The background of the ancient city and the Roman Hippodrome shows how badly the site is managed where modern buildings and poor houses surrounds the site.
There is an entrance of 2.3$ per person. It takes 20 mn to visit quickly the whole site including the Arche and the Hippodrome.

while you are Tyr or Sour (I cant remember exactly which one is the old name and the new name of the town) this Ancient Roman Site is a must see site. while I was there I couldn't stop thinking about how was the life there at the time of Roman. I think that this place need to get more attention from the Authorities Lebanon.

Hi,
Does anybody know if there's an entry fee to see the Tyre Roman Ruins? And also the hours of operation?
Thank you

Hi Sorry for my delay but I was not aware of your question till now
When I was based in Sour (Tyre) there was many places, in town, where i could access freely to, either the hypodrom ruins or the Roman forum (there was a gate at the beach) Locals used to cross all over the hypodrom ruins by the shop "Al Ram Pastry", try to find where they get inside

could anybody help me to know how much time would be reasonable to allocate visiting Tyre? would it be possible to see all tourist attractions of tyre and saida in a day?
Written 10 September 2018
You can hire a nice air conditioned car for $20 a day.
I would start early and if possible when in Tyre drive on to the Naoura area which has some amazing beaches and cafes with views to die for.

Hello! Can anyone recommend a quaint, yet economical accommodation in Tyre? We will be traveling at the end of October. Unfortunately, everything appears so very over-priced. Thanks! M.

Hi everyone
2 questions:
1.can someone tell me how i can get to Haifa from Tyre?
2. Also, can someone give me an itinerary for 3-4 days of what to see in Tyre and surrounds.
Written 18 August 2016
Hello :)
I wish that you can get from Haifa to Tyre, but it seems you don't know that the borders are closed between Lebanon and Occupied Palestine!
Even by plane you cannot come to Lebanon, if you have a visa stamped on your passport by Israel.
If you still want to come, I can answer your question number 2 then :D

Vorrei sapere se al sito archeologico ci sono guide autorizzate? Are there by the archeological site authorized guides?
Qual è la tariffa ( più o meno)? What is the fee for a guided tour?
Grazie!

Travelled and stayed in Beirut last year inspite of some travel advise from foreign offices against it but felt perfectly safe and secure as i would in any other country I have visited in Europe. My friends have asked me to stay nearer to them in Tyre/Sur but again FCO's are advising against it. Has anyone travelled recently who can give me an update (im not looking for a safety guarantee) who has visited recently

I spent some days there in 2015 September/October and the situation was very safe...but it's a Hezbollah region, near to Israeli border, so everything may suddenly change
