Very cool area, pretty countryside, and a chance to see a tortoise in the wild. Or burrows in the cooler weather.

The reserve is bit off the paved road and once you arrive there is a small trailer that contains a small museum, interpretative center of sorts. We didn’t walk any trails as we arrived late before closing so didn’t have the opportunity to see any...More

The Visitor center sits well out of town, along an unusually well-kept dirt road. Direction signs are well placed and hard-to-miss. Any passenger car can make the trip; RVs: maybe. I drove to the VC, arriving as early in the morning as possible (5 minutes...More

We didn't see any Tortoises but was a nice walk. I've heard you have to get out there pretty early to see them. But you never know so it was worth a shot.

Yay to these folks for working hard to save and rehab habitat for desert tortoises. Please stop here and even if you don't see a tortoise look out for nature all around you. Leopard, horned and side-blotch lizards were out amongst the wild flowers and...More

Cannot say enough good about this place, the people, and the experience. It's a small adventure finding the place, in part because California City covers so much land. But the drive out is in fact easy and you get so see a bit of the...More

Woohoo found a tortoise! Fell in love with him/her straight away. It's not like it is loaded with tortoises here, so you'll have to work for it a bit. Have a nice walk and keep your eyes wide open, they are definitely there! Be quiet....More
