Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed a night here in the middle of March and we loved it.

There are great accommodation options, mainly minshuku, bed and breakfast style. There are stunning old places which will excite you before you even enter.

For a westerner, this is what Japan's all about, old history of edo period , samurai travelling between Kyoto and Tokyo and needing somewhere to rest on the way, that sort of thing.

Wen you are there, the whole place looks like it did all that time ago and you can enjoy the food, accommodation, do the trail and just rest in a mountain area, full of rice fields, old wooden houses and bamboo forests.

Its easy to get to as well, most people do the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto and you just catch a train and bus from Nagoya, one of the stops on the Shinkansen. It's only an hour and a half from Nagoya and you will be sitting. A little mountain town.

We stayed one night, did the walk that afternoon and left in the morning, I would do two nights if I did it Gain so it was a rush but it wasn't too bad if one night is all you have.

There is a bus at 2.17pm to Magome for the walk so try and check in to your hotel if you are staying overnight before 1.30pm to get that bus and walk back to Tsumago.

This amazing village has been restored to retain the look & feel from Edo times. Dark, wood clad houses, cobbled street & watermills make for ideal photo opportunities. Great start/end to walking the Nakasendo trail

Very basic, even by ryokan standards. Tiny room for solo traveller and not serviced at all - breakfast tray left at the end of the day. Excellent location makes up.

A small cluster of houses/guesthouses. Part of the Magome-Tsumago hiking route. Nothing much by way of shops.

This is a post station that appears just after you head from Tsumago to Magome. From here, you enter the Nakasendo road in the mountains. It is not a big post station, but the crape myrtle flowers were beautifully blooming. The river that flows through here seems to be the river that flows from Otaki and Metaki waterfalls, and the water is so clear that it is a firefly village.
