    History at your doorstep
A must see during your stay in Carmel. PROS: a step back in time in a self-guided tour through this piece of California history is not to be missed. Inexpensive admission and very informative set up. The grounds are lovely and the workmanship in restoring the mission is ongoing. Parking is free. CONS: none

    Beautiful Carmel Mission Basilica Museum
We enjoy stopping at these old missions in California, tons of history. The museum cost little to get in and is well worth it. This is a pretty good size mission and we took about an hour to see each room, display, garden areas and Church. They also have a Gift shop.

Unmissable if you are in the Monterey / Carmel region
Do not miss the beautifully restored historical gem in Carmel. The buildings and grounds are a treat in themselves with some gorgeous landscaped gardens and the typical central courtyard. The church itself is a must-see and there is a very good collection of artifacts from the Spanish era of California.

Make this one of your top spots to visit in Carmel
Fantastic historical site - a must see. Having been born and raised in California I am well familiar with the chain of missions from San Diego in the south north, each about a day's foot walk apart (by intent). Though I have lived near Carmel for most of my life, this was my first visit. I was wowed by the care and presentation, and of course the burial location of Junipero Serra, the missionary who led creation of the mission chain. Plan a few hours to absorb the sense of place and history. Seniors 62 and over only $10 admission, otherwise $13 (as of April 2024).

I was so looking forward to seeing and experiencing the Carmel Mission Basilica that I had specifically come to Carmel to see it. I was accompanied by my PTSD service dog and was turned away at the admission station. I was told “the only service dogs allowed are seeing eye dogs”. I didn’t know they could discriminate in that manner. In the years I’ve had a service dog, I have never had this experience. It was a disappointment. We went to the beach instead and had a wonderful day in spite of the treatment we received at the basilica.

I really enjoyed the beauty of the place. For me, the religious stuff fell flat. The beautiful courtyard and all the gorgeous flowers and landscaping were worth the visit.

The mission was started over 250 years ago, It has been revitalized and is going through more renovations.
The staff were friendly and as you walk through the various parts of the mission you can get a sense of the dedication of the missionaries who made it all possible.
It also housed the first library in California.
It takes about 1 hour and a bit to see the various buildings, graveyard and the basilica.
Well worth seeing.

The Mission is very well kept and full of art and history. It was easy to spend a couple of hours meandering around the grounds and the Mission Church. We even got to see a wedding in progress. The most interesting feature was the Pope’s Bathroom which was constructed for one use and has not been used since Pope John Paul II’s visit.
