We took this tour while on our Paul Gauguin cruise. Paul was a terrific tour guide. He provided great information about the island of Huahine along with much more about the development of French Polynesia. We highly recommend this tour.

We did this tour via a Windstar cruise and it was very enjoyable and educational. Like Hawaii, in French Polynesia it is easy to complete an entire vacation without any insight into the history or culture. Most of us are hungry for such an education but tours in general do not focus on that in my experience. Island Eco Tour on the other hand was very focused on learning and we appreciated that. Paul has a lot of energy and is very entertaining so the tour is a lot of fun as well. Highly recommended.

I have read many reviews about this tour and was looking forward to it. Our guide was not Paul but an older gentleman Pierre, Phellipe? He was a very nice man but has been smoking many years he was always hacking and didn't have enough air to project his voice, I have good hearing but had a lot of trouble hearing him, he has been on the island for years so is very knowledgeable but just no energy. Beautiful island and good itinerary but lackluster presentation.

We really enjoyed this tour, far and away the most culturally informative of any we tour on any island we visited. . Paul is a great guide and has so much passion for the culture. So much more in depth, thoughtful and entertaining with Paul leading the way.
Make sure you book this tour when you visit this beautiful island!
Thanks Paul, maybe we will cross paths in the South Bay!! Gene and Tracy

Eco Island Tours and its leader Paul Atallah, anthropologist/archaeologist, are THE unsurpassed experts for exploring Polynesian culture and the puzzle of the Pacific Islands. They bring the land, it's history and people alive while weaving a detailed picture of Polynesia's rich past with its current events and evolving changes. I guarantee you'll enjoy the tour, the talk the wonderful exchange of questions and answers. I can't think of a better way to spend a few hours.

Paul is deeply passionate about Polynesian history and has a great way of sharing his knowledge. We came away with a deeper understanding of Huahine, the Polynesian migration and the culture of the area far more deeply than if we were to see the sites independently.

The concierge said take this tour if you are the kind of person who wants to learn a great deal about the culture of the island. Paul is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and easy to listen to. He has oodles of information to share. I just wish I got to hear more of it. Our tour had two French speaking couples and my husband and myself. Paul got so carried away in telling information in French that he would forget to speak to us. At times, he would ramble on in French for minutes, then turn to us and say 3 sentences. Once he acknowledged that he can forget what he already said in French. When I could pick out a word or two, I'd ask him what he said and he'd explain more in English. At the marae, he talked at length in French, sometimes with his back to us like he had forgotten us. I wanted to interrupt and ask him to speak to us, but I didn't want to be rude. Finally, he sent the others to explore the museum and talked to us. At a minimum, he should've told us before he started speaking that he giving his entire speech in French first and then English. I told him we specifically took his tour because we liked learning all the details. But he didn't get the hint and even out the time spent in both languages. I think Paul is an engaging speaker and presents his material in a lively way. But he did a poor job of presenting info equally. He is a native English speaker, so he doesn't have that excuse. I just came away frustrated that I wasn't able to learn all Paul had to share.

Hi
I've been doing tours in both English and French for almost 20 years.....I apologize if you felt like you didn't get the maximum from the tour, or that you didn't feel like you were getting equal time in English as those in French..I have never received this comment before..it's really a shame that you didn't let me know during the tour that you felt this way......I would have done all I can to rectify the situation then...............

Paul Atallah - guide
Paul Attallah is an excellent guide for learning about the history and archaeology of Huahine, French Polynesia. He has a degree in Polynesian Anthropology and a degree in Pacific Islands Archaeology, has worked on some of the archaeological sites on Huahine, and has lived on the island for 25 years. All this gives him a great understanding of Huahine, both past and present.
He has the ability to explain the what pre-European Polynesia was like, what happened with the arrival of the Europeans, and more importantly why these changes happened. He made this complex history very interesting and understandable. He was careful not to take sides or judge what happened and
used some present day analogies of things that are changing to make his explanations clearer. It was a pleasant learning experience. Paul is the type of person I would like to invite for a beer or two to just listen to what he has to say. Unfortunately, time did not allow for this.
Oh, and the blue eyed eels are interesting, too.
I highly recommend this guide if you are visiting Huahine. Because his business card is in both French and English (he is from California originally), I assume that he gives tours in both languages.

Great tour - very informative and personable guide! Paul did a great job of explaining the history as well as the flora and fauna of Tahiti. We would definitely take this tour on our next visit.

My husband and I live in Hawaii and are eager to see the archaeological sites on Huahine. (In the summer of 1978, my mother and I recognized Dr. Sinoto on Moorea.) We will be at Huahine on Sunday, Dec. 8th. My friend Sigrid enjoyed touring with Paul.

I just tried to email to the address on your website for eco tours. I asked how much a tour was for two people from the Paul Gauguin by Paul Atallah and if we could stop at the pottery ad pearl place that seems near to the Marae. We arrive on March 8th at 8AM and leave at 5 PM. Anne Irons-Palma
