Oljeon
About
Imagine a time without electricity. On the Island Oljeön in Ängelsberg you will find the world's oldest preserved oil refinery, from 1875. In this factory, light oils and kerosene were produced which gave light to the Swedish industries and households of that time. Today the factory is a museum which offer guided tours in the summer. Join the ferry ride over and see the intact factory interior, visit the workers' home and learn about the everyday and working life of that time out on the island. From Oljeön you also have a striking view of Lake Åmänningen and Ängelsberg's community with beautiful villas.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Four of us--one Swedish American and three Swedes---took the guided tour of Oljeön (in Swedish) in August 2023. Our guide was Thomas Muhr. Thomas did a fantastic job of making the story of the island and Ängelsberg come alive. Although we four are all well read in Swedish history, we learned many news things during the tour. High recommended!

It is on an island, and you can access it with a tour, but only during the Summer. On the pier, there is some information about the site.
Take a walk through the village; quite nice old buildings and train station!

We used an English speaking audio tour available with the cost of our ticket. It was brief but interesting and we really enjoyed soaking up the atmosphere of the island and the buildings on it. He Swedish speaking guide was very enthused and spoke at length.

The oldest remaining refinery in Sweden tells an interesting story of industrial pioneers. A guided tour is just over an hour, with the refinery on a beautiful island that would be worth a visit in itself. Knowledgable and friendly guides make the visit something to remember.
