Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Dating from the earliest years of Christianity, the rock-carved church is located in the Gulsehir district of Cappadocia, at about 19 km from Nevsehir. The church has some of the most beautiful and best preserved frescoes anywhere in Cappadocia and, at the time of our visit, there were no other tourists.
On the ground floor there are rooms for the monks, a dorm, some graves and some not so attractive animal and geometric figures on the wall. The upper level is fully covered by amazing frescoes depicting Baptism of Christ, Last supper, Kiss of Judas , Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, Emperor Constantine, Saint George, Satan and many others.
It's an amazing, beautiful little church

The tiny two storey church of John the Baptist is carved into the rock face . Outwardly dull but inside it's beautiful. The many restored paintings are stunning. Perhaps only bettered in quality by the famous "Dark" church in Goreme. An added bonus is that non flash photography is permitted.
Off the main tourist track & a bit isolated from other attractions but we're so pleased we went.

This little church carved out of the rocks is in excellent condition and worth a visit. The frescoes depicting biblical scenes are in a wonderful condition and really beautiful. From Nevsehir minibuses leaves every 30 minutes for Gulsehir village about 20km away. Just before Gulsehir you will come to the Open Air museum and about 2 km later is the church. Just asked the driver to stop for you. The church is just up the road and entrance is 5 Turkish Lire and open from 8 am - 5 pm.. You can take photographs and the outside is also interesting. I would suggest you visit the open air museum first and then the little church of St Jean ( Karsi Kilise) . I highly recommend a vissit to both places.

... and I've seen many. In Goreme, Ihlara... etc. yet these stand out, both as being off the beaten track a bit, and they are very well preserved. Moreover photography is allowed (no flash). Found it in my great Lonely Planet book. Combine it with the Open Air Palace ruins not far away.

This is a great church with some really great preserved frescos. It is off the main tourist route and when we visited we were the only ones there which gave us time to have a really good look. The entrance fee is 5 TL and well worth it. If you are in the area you should go.

First, here is the address: Açıksaray Mahallesi, Necip Fazıl Cad no 38, 50900 Gülşehir/Nevşehir, Türkiye. I think this is degrees on a map: (38.7411010, 34.6346455). I just left there and saw a brown sign pointing the wrong way.
It was difficult to find. Do NOT give up looking! It was worth the search!
Second, cost is 40 TL as of 6/31/23. It’s covered by the Capadocia pass.
Third, WOW! The only place that rivals the beauty and completeness (in this area) is the first chapel/room at the Goreme Open Air Museum; it is being restored. (I haven’t seen the Dark Church there. Maybe it’s more complete?) St Jean’s appears to be original! The first floor is barren of frescos. The second floor is where this little known gem shines!! It clearly shows images of biblical stories. See other posts for specifics. The colors and detail in workmanship is amazing.
Fourth. spread the word about this place. It’s not to be missed!!

This double storey little church carved into rock with best preserved frescos from the early Christian era. Definitely worth to visit.

This little church is probably not on the main tourist routes in Cappadocia and thus does not see an influx of visitors. Nevertheless it is definitely worth taking the detour as it has magnificent frescos, if not the best, at least one of the best in Cappadocia. They are best seen from the first floor reached by a wooden stair case.
When in the region also make sure to plan time to visit Aciksaray (Open Palace) which is also found along the main road. Unfortunately we did not have the time to visit Aciksaray during our holiday in Cappadocia, one of the reasons to return.

The Church of St John in Gulsehir is another intriguing church carved out of solid rock. It has beautifully restored colourful frescoes, with a wide range of biblical scenes. We found these frescoes even more beautiful than some in the Goreme Open Air museum, with the double bonus that we were the only people there after a small group of Turkish school kids left, so we could spend as much time as we liked, and there was no restriction on non-flash photography. Again, we had a hire car, so had no problem getting to the site. A beautiful church, spectacular in its own unique way, and thoroughly recommended to independent travellers who want to get away from the mass tourist sites in Cappadocia.

Beautiful frescos adorn this church. We were there only ones there and it was lovely. You have to climb up a spiral staircase and stand on a platform to see them which made me a little giddy. 40T per person.
