Quiet road, winding and astonishing views when you reach the ocean. Cows in the meadows reaching the oceans, good hiking, but very few towns and no fuel untill you reach the 101.

Wow this HWY 1 adventure on the lost coast was amazing. We were in an RV class A and had amazing views from our drivers seat. We made some stops for pictures and it was amazing we were happy to be at an amazingly quiet part of the world. Stars at night were also amazing I recommend you go to... More

The worst road ever, but the coast is unspoiled and majestic. Awesome! Plan on 4 hour trip. The road is so bad! So going 15 to 20 mph is normal. Any faster and you will lose half tour car!

The road is twisty in places and sometimes undulating but the surface is generally good so a 4 wheel is not essential. Where else can you get a sandy beach totally to yourself and enjoy distant misty views of the coastline and trees while the sun slants beams through onto the sea. If you like solitude this drive is well... More

An awesome spot on the way to Humboldt Redwood National Park. It is rare to find a place where the ancient redwoods come all the way down to the ocean.

The Lost Coast Scenic Drive is not to be missed but requires some preparation. We started at the Ferndale end and traveled to Shelter Cove. The drive is simply stunning especially the stretch that immediately follows the coast line just south of Capetown. The coastline is so beautiful it reminded me a great deal of the Nā Pali Coast on... More

From Ferndale, staying on Mattole through Honeydew and out through the redwood forest near Weott, this is about a 67 mile ride. Some rough road with potholes and such and some gravel sections. I'm sure they aren't the same sections every few months. Spectacular views as you drop down to the coast, from both directions. I turned around a few... More

If you take 211/Mattole to reach the Lost Coast, make sure you are ready for the drive. Have a full tank of gas. The road is in bad shape, it's very curvy, and the grade and potholes are terrible. The views and beach by Petrolia are beautiful. I also suggest having water and snacks. This drive isn't for someone who... More

The drive is very scenic and starts just outside of Ferndale, winding its way along the northern coast of California in Humboldt county. Most of it is paved (though it is riddled with potholes), and some of it appears to be mainly gravel. You pass though several little enclaves with lots of beautiful farms - occasionally you get stopped by... More
