Overview
More
Altja was first mentioned in written records in 1465 and is a typical seaside village, with all of its houses stretching along one street. The Uustalu and Toomarahva farms at Altja are typical coastal farms and have been restored by Lahemaa National Park. On the point at Altja you can see the fishing net sheds which were reconstructed on the basis of old photographs and the memories of the villagers. The village also has its own swing and tavern, where you can try local dishes.

Hiking trail is well marked and easy to follow. Village is very picturesque and photo worthy. One of the houses was having it's roof relaid when we visited and it was very interesting to watch the traditional craftsman at work.

It is a small, pretty village. The cluster of fisherman's huts I see in photos is about 1/2 mile's walk off the road. The path then loops around to make a rather longer circle. Where the huts are there is a crafts shop (carefully not...More

Small Place, beautiful historical area. The restaurant is unique - a old log house and the food is excellent! Traditional Estonian food - it was really good! The midsummer party is a big thing there!

Walked through the village and followed the mini hike route reversely (so first the beach and then the forest). Really beautiful and impressively silent. Nothing sensational it was a very pleasant and peaceful hour. There's a mini restaurant at the start/end of the trail.

This is rural Estonian life opened to tourists. It's a great stop off on lahemaa walking trips. The views from the beach are beautiful as is the architecture. The village swing is still in situ and in use. You must sing a folk song of...More

Altja as a few abandoned traditional fishing cottages along a pretty seashore. There's also a large wooden swing that children will enjoy. Nice place to stop for a short while in Lahemaa National Park.
