Host is local Chinese who lived in this ancient city for long. She is friendly, nice and helpful. I arrived very early 5:30am ans weather is very cold. She welcomed me with hotsoup and pingyao tea that she explained this is good for health and also biscuit in local taste. Pingyao ancient city has many interesting places and it is... More

This is one of the only cities that shows the real China how it was before. Get yourselves lost in the streets, even at night. It's very safe, although it doesn't look like at night in the dark. There are lots of shops and restaurants. There is one kind of ticket that is valid for 3 days that you can... More

You can see Pingyao in one full day, but it's really worthwhile taking the time to stopover. It was one of the highlights of our trip - you have moments when you feel like you've stepped back in time (or into 'real' China) more than anywhere else on the main tourist itinerary. If you're travelling between Xi'an & Beijing then... More

On your way from Beijing to Xi'an please consider to stay at Pingyao for two days. It is worth your while. All buildings are in traditional style.

Our tour company, China Educational Tours, sent us to Pingyao because we like to see more than the big cities. The entire town is surrounded by a well-kept and very high wall. They put us up in a traditional Chinese hotel, which was a different and fun experience. Our guide, Johanna, was delightful. She looked like a funky college student... More

If you expect a quaint old town you will be disappointed. Even though most if China is like this; neon lights, souvenir shops and mediocre food, prepare for the next level here. The architecture is very impressive but if you've seen one of the sights you've seen them all so the 3-day ticket is not really value for money. Though... More

Pingyao's Ancient City is an absolute insider's tip: A completely preserved downtown like hundreds of years ago (ok, but with the comfort of the modern world, like electricity and fluent water;)) So if you want a time travel, go there! Strangely, there are almost no western travel groups since Pingyao is largely unknown in the west.

I loved the low houses and the ancient atmosphere inside the city walls. Every house is (restored) as it was so many centuries ago and there are no modern lightpoles in the town, only smaller lamps at the houses. Even now (off season) the main streets are crouwded and lined up with many shops and eateries. You can buy a... More

Such a beautiful old town with such a rich history and culture! Its narrow streets are jam-packed with stores, restaurants, street food carts, and local craftsmen selling stuff they just made. All the building are really old but are kept in great condition. Of course it is packed with tourists.

Its a nice old city centre, with the traditional chinese culture in it. But as with chinese culture, its not being kept and cared for much. Everything was just getting in a worse state every passing moment. They should try to clean and do some repair once in a while! + again way to many tourist. Especially the tourist cars,... More
