This place has amazing potential but suffers from pretty poor curation and lack of signage in more than just Chinese and at times English. The dioramas were all pretty much without good explanation or very broken English. The curators could do with going to museums...More

It’s an eye opening experience.. huge mansion of the old time Super rich that’s well preserved and worth a visit. A movie was filmed here before. A visit there gives me a better understanding and feel of how the filthy rich led their lives.

Lots of fascinating history associated with this family. On a much smaller scale than Beijings Forbidden City but here you can actually go inside all the rooms and see all the artefacts. Much more interesting. But as with some of the other sights, you really...More

I quite enjoyed Zhang Yimou's film, "Raise the Red Lantern," so I was really tickled to be able to come here. It was a bit overcrowded with domestic tourists on group tours, which is often a problem in China since they tend to be noisy...More

There are more than a few big family compounds sprawled over the region. We visited Qiao's Family Compound and Wang's Family Compound. Qiao's smaller, more intricate and better maintained than Wang's but it is very much more crowded. Recommend that you visit at least one...More

The main attraction of this place was that it was used as a set for the Red Lantern movie. In real life, there weren't any red lanterns unless on auspicious occasions. But now to satisfy the tourists, red lanterns are strung up everywhere. There is...More

Because of a movie it has become a very crowded place. It is also pretty expensive when you compare to what you can see and visit in Pingyao. It does not add anything to it and is a bit repetitive. Not worth spending that money...More

I thought this place looked familiar as we walked through an d were told about many of the numerous rooms. It looked familiar because it was the set for my favorite Chinese movie, Raise the red Lantern. It is impressive to see how a wealthy...More

We visited this compound as part of our visit to Pingyao. On the drive out you can observe cave dwellings. The compound itself is large and interesting. Our guide was not that great, too much time on his cell phone, but the site itself is...More

I also advise to use a private car and guide even if it is not that far away from Pingyao. I also recommend to use Jonathan as a guide. His phone +86 158 3503 3752. His English is impeccable, he is very honest and flexible... More

You cant miss the guides for hire because they are directly across from the ticket counters. We also booked a driver that took us to Pingyao for a couple days and then to the Qiao compound.
