To begin with, I watched the movie "Raise the Red Lantern" which was filmed in this compound and then I kind of got a whole different understanding of why this place is so interesting. The movie summary is this: "China in the 1920's. After her father's death, nineteen year old Songlian is forced to marry Chen Zuoqian, the lord of... More

I am impress with the house of qiao. This house used to belong to a very successful shanXI merchant . We paid 80 rmb for a guide. It was worth it. She told us the history of this family and the reasons for the furniture in the rooms and their way of life. We saw the 2 beautiful lantarns given... More

Our fantastic tour guide Jonathan Zhang took us to see this and we found the family compound really interesting and quite magnificent. My wife and I really enjoyed this and having Jonathan there to tell us the what and the why, really made our visit here so much better. We purchased two items from here and we will have great... Being a fan of the film Raise the Red Lantern, I was particularly interested to visit this compound. Our guide advised that a new part was built for the film. We visited the original compound and saw rooms and courtyards inhabited by generations of the Qiao family complete with red lanterns. On the way out, there are many small stalls... More

Got a sense on how the rich lived in those days - kitchen, guest room, bedroom, office...etc. Once inside the compound, the buildings all looked similar. A small courtyard with rooms along all three sides. After awhile, every section of the compound looked the same.

The Qiao Family Compound was a great prologue for a trip to Pingyao - linking the mercantile activity in the city with the lifestyles of the tycoons. The large and sprawling complex of interlinked homes filled with period furniture and decor was worth the two hours we spent there. English explanations were a bit hit-and-miss but adequate. We did not... More

If you want good example of the rich merchants lived then this is a must see. I would recommend hiring a guide and they have some that are at the gate. You can go in many of the building and there are English descriptions too. There are many vendors within the grounds but that is the only negative.

This fabulous compound, a few miles away from Pingyao is much more than a film set. Much care has been applied to furnishing the rooms with original pieces and the overall feeling during the visit is like stepping back in time. Must be seen.
