Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

"You've never been to Shiraito Falls, have you?" This is what we came to talk about. Karuizawa by Shinkansen It is a school, but it was a trip by car because it is a waterfall in a dedicated car road. The toll is 500 yen.
Just a short walk from the free parking lot lined along the road. After climbing up the slope a little, you will see a waterfall 70m wide and 3m high in front of you. The striations that seep out from between the rocks and go exactly like white threads are also falling to the full width. It's three meters tall, so it's smaller than I thought. It might be. Some say "waterfall" is "less water" or "less powerful" because the word "waterfall" is an image of a waterfall that falls steadily from a high place, but it is a white thread waterfall. And the water is clean anyway. It is clear as ever. Hayase descends from the quiet waterfall upstream of Yukawa (Harnile Terrace ).
A place that would be cool even in summer. It was between the summer season and the autumn colors season, but there were a lot of people.

I wouldn't say this is a "must see." We went on a rainy day where there were barely any other visitors, which made it easy to take photos of the falls. The walk from the entrance to the falls is no more than a 10-15 minute walk. Taking photos at the falls itself will take no more than 10 minutes, so basically this is a 30-40 minute itinerary at the maximum. It's a good stop-off, but I wouldn't make it your reason to come to Karuizawa!

"Shiraito Falls" in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture is located in a lush green forest. It is an amazing natural wonder; waterfall features: about 200 meters long and 20 meters high. The water flow is delicate, like white silk satin, and the water quality is transparent and crystal clear.
For transportation, you can take the Sogaru Kotsu Bus in the direction of "Kita-Karuizawa" from Karuizawa Station (about 23 minutes), get off at "Shiraito Falls" and walk for about 5 minutes to get there.

Came here as a stopover from our way down from Kusatsu to Karuizawa. The drive into this place is nice and beautifully lined with autumn leaves. Very nice view when you are visiting during the autumn periods. The walk into the falls is also light and easy for older people. Parking along the road beside the falls is easy but be careful not to run over the bus load of tourists.

It's small, but it's a beautiful place.
The water is so clear you'll want to swim in it.
They sell grilled fish at the entrance, so I can understand why you'd want to eat it.
Parking is free, but it's a toll road, so be careful - it costs 500 yen for a regular car.

Take the bus from Karuizawa station which accepts coins (I think you can change 1000 yen into coins at the machine near the driver). The trip takes about half an hour or thereabouts. You won't need more than 10-15 minutes at the falls.

Leaving Old Karuizawa Ginza behind, we headed for Shiraito Falls, located in the mountains about 10km north. We walked along a mountain path through the forest to a parking lot along the road, from which we walked along the promenade.
Shiraito Falls, located at the source of the Yukawa River, is about 3m high but spreads over a width of 70m, with hundreds of streams of groundwater cascading down from the rocks. As its name suggests, it flows down like white threads. Since it is not tall, it does not feel very impressive, but it is a truly beautiful waterfall. We visited in May, when the area was in the season of new green leaves, so the hundreds of streams stood out even more beautifully against the refreshing greenery.

Shiraito Falls is one of the most famous and beautiful waterfalls in Japan. Access to these waterfalls, which are about 150 meters wide and more than 30 meters high, is possible by walking for about 15 minutes. This waterfall is located on the path of the Shiba River and in a green valley. Due to the touristic nature of this place, a number of restaurants and souvenir shops have been built on the way to the waterfall. Otodome waterfall is located in another branch of this river, and although it is much fuller and higher, but because it is more difficult to access, it has received less attention. These two waterfalls are located in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013. Allow at least two hours to visit these two waterfalls.

The amount of water seemed less than it looked in the photos.
After parking the car in the parking lot along the road, cross the road to the waterfall.
It's a 2-3 minute walk to get there, so you should only stay for about 30 minutes.
There is a souvenir shop and public toilets near the parking lot.
Even though they are public, the toilets are well maintained and clean.
It was a bit disappointing, as the reviews were very positive.

If you visit only one waterfall in Japan, make it this one. We're glad to have headed to Shiraito Falls after our skiing activities.
If it's a sunny afternoon, you can count on there being a crowd around the Shiraito Falls. We went on a winter day, and found it quite a spectacle. It is even more beautiful when the crowd is not there, of course. Remember to check the bus schedule: departing one from Shiraito Falls (heading for Karuizawa Station) leaves roughly hourly. Namely, 10:10, 10:43, 11:40, 12:13, 13:10, 14:20, 15:20 and 16:50.

I’m visiting karuizawa in feb 23 2020. We’ll stay at asama prince hotel with my husband and 2 toddlers. Do you have advice? Anything might help:)

30 mins drive up from your hotel is the wonderful Shiraito Falls. There is a small hiking trail there, kids might enjoy walking around there. Further drive up (another 30 mins) from Shiraito Falls you will find ski grounds and the wonderful Manza onsen where we stayed overnight in end Nov. Enjoy what nature provides!

Thinking just to do a stopover at 白糸の滝 when we take the bus to Kusatsu Onsen, please advise if that is possible and if there is any luggage locker there so that we do not have to tag our luggages along. Thank you.
Written 17 September 2017
Don't know about the bus stop over, but when I was there I didn't see any storage lockers for luggage and the way things are set up there, it will be difficult to put the luggage anywhere

I am planning to visit Karuizawa on 22 or 23 Dec for a day trip. Is the bus to this water fall still available? Is there a time table that I can refer to?
Also, is this tourist attraction open during 22 or 23 Dec?
Written 5 December 2016
Hi, you can find the bus timetable using these keywords:

I'm sorry I can't post the actual website as TripAdvisor seem to block HTML information.
Good luck and have fun!

Hi, I am interested to join a day tour which includes a visit to Shiraito Falls on my upcoming trip to Japan.
However, as i am bringing 2 old folks along, with aching knees..
I would appreciate if any nice soul can advice, if the the route is elderly friendly?
Will they require to walk a lot / with steep slopes or long flight of stairs to get a nice view of it?
Is their first trip to japan and i hope to make their trip as pleasing and comfortable as possible.
Hope to get more information on the route before deciding if i should go ahead with the tour.
Thank you!!

It is a very short walk from the parking lot to the falls...no steps. The walk is easy with only a slight incline. Don't go in the Winter though....lots of ice and snow.
