Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It took us some time to find this memorial chapel. It was a small wooden chapel, not grand in outlook yet very worthwhile to pay a visit because this chapel helped us to remember the so-called founder of Karuizawa, Alexander Croft Shaw, a missionary from Canada.

It was a very quiet environment, very enjoyable and comfortable. But coming to here would probably need help from Google map, as it was not easy to find.

Built by Canadian missionary Alexander Croft Shaw in 1895, the Memorial Chapel is the oldest church in Karuizawa.

It’s a humble little timber chapel, nestled in the wood. To pay respect, visitors have to take off shoes when entering and photography is not allowed inside the chapel.

My previous visit was in 2016 and I am blessed to be able to visit it again in 2023.

It’s an ideal place to pray silently and to rest the mind. Let’s all pray for world peace 🙏🏼

The church has a feeling of great serenity an simplicity. It is a beautiful historic wooden building. There is a little bit of historical information on the walls.

It is a small beautiful church tucked in the woods, at Kyu-Karuizawa. The church is rustic and made of wood, just like the other churches in the vicinity.

I enjoyed the tranquility and serenity of the church and its environment. It is peaceful and awesome being there. It's a good place to take a moment to pray and to reflect on the meaning of life.

Quaint, small, sort of cute, but not special. It's on a long road leading away from the village which is worth the walk. Very green. Stroll through the grounds.

The memorial church was an interesting stop along this course we were following in Karuizawa. You need to take your shoes off at the entrance. Not sure the historical significance of this church was other than it being a memorial chapel named after Alexander Croft Shaw.

We headed east along the main street of Old Karuizawa. As the shopping street ended, we came across the Shaw Memorial Chapel on the left. The building is devoid of any unnecessary decoration and its simplicity really highlights it.
This church is the oldest in Karuizawa, where Canadian missionary A.C. Shaw, known as the father of Karuizawa's development, spent his first summer in 1886 and used it as a base for his missionary activities. In the quiet church garden stood a bust and monument of Shaw. The first villa he built in Karuizawa has now been restored behind the church and is open to the public for free as the Shaw House Memorial Museum.
