Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Wowed by the wonders of nature. The hotsprings flow throughout the year and you can get really close to experience the wonders of mother nature. Though most people do not travel far into the valley, if you have time it is worth the while to spend quite some time here. Bring a mask just in case you are prone to the effects of sulphur which comes out of the ground all the time. Note that there is no sale of food and drinks so be prepared. Parking for us was 500 yen and we had all the food and drinks we needed in the car. After that, it was either a short drive or a leisurely walk to the only shopping street in Noboribetsu, where there are many restaurants worht visiting and shops to get souvenirs. Make sure that you pay duty free for the things you purchase.

Although I've been to Hokkaido many times, I never had the chance, so it's a place I've always wanted to go to.
I paid 500 yen at the parking lot just before the entrance and walked there.
There's no admission fee, so people staying at nearby inns can enter for free.
The steam rising from various places is surely the entrance to hell? It reminds me of extraterrestrial life.
I thought it would be much hotter, but I was able to get around without any problems.

Oyunuma Lake/Pond in Jigokudani is a beautiful steaming pond (over 200° bottom and 120° at the surface overflowing into the Onoyuma River which is a hot steam river meandering thru a mystical forest where you can sooth your tired feet in the most natural river hot spring and further sooth your toes and soles in the even hotter river bed filled with volcanic black sand...an out-of-world experience. Stay at the Noboribetsu Dai-ichi Takimotokan Hotel which has the largest onsen hot springs in Hokkaido with over 30 treatment pools and over 50,000sf. Be sure to stay in their Japanese style tatami rooms, and eat their incredible breakfast and dinner buffets...5 stars all around!

2024.07 Monday / Noboribetsu Jigokudani (Aomori-Akita trip, Hokkaido)
[Time required] 40 minutes [Cost] Free [Parking] 500 yen / Common to Jigokudani and Oyunuma
【Comments】When I entered the hot spring town, Enma-sama welcomed me with the smell of sulfur.
This is my first climb in over 20 years. The parking lot directed me to P3 near the observation deck.
Down the slope to Noboribetsu Park Service Center. Take a quick look before heading to the next ogre toilet.
And the filming point, Jigokudani Observatory, is just around the corner.
There are a lot of volunteers here who will release the shutters to mark the occasion.
Also, when I asked, he gave me a quick tour here. If you ask a lively volunteer, they will show you to Tetsusen Pond.
As you walk along the wooden promenade, there is an iron spring pond at the end. He just seems quiet.
A short distance away, there was smoke here and there, and I was able to experience an active volcano.
【Previous Visit】Ramen Tea Lake: Impressive View of the Sea Station Puratto Market
【Next stop】Oyunuma

The whole area has interesting thermal features with colour coded trails to choose from. Most trails take less than 15 minutes. Free of charge for entrance while parking charges 500 yen each time. Not sure if one payment covers all carpark in the area. Look like so. Parking during evening is free. Overall the area is not too big and most people should manage to cover the majority on foot. The Green Trail offers night walking which is a higlight. You better check with hotel staff if it's available during the season of your visit.

Getting there - Bought a Noboribetsu Area Pass and took a JR train to Noboribetsu Station. There’s a direct bus from the station to Jigokudani.
Quite a breathtaking sight and we feel that it’s a must to visit when you’re in Hokkaido. Please take note that’s it’s quite dangerous to visit during winter as the slopes are slippery. Do not recommend to being along elderly during winter. There’s also some restaurants and a bear park nearby for you to visit after visiting the hell valley.

went to visit this place during winter and a bit later in the afternoon, we got to see the rock formations with and without the lights along the pathways. it was beautiful and a nice place to have a bit of a walk. however, if you can't stand the smell of sulfur, please avoid this place. this place is nicely located near onsen hotels/accommodations too.

I walked around the hot spring area by myself. I was impressed by the scenery of the hot springs bubbling up.
Each hot spring is different, but walking here requires physical strength. It's free to walk through the valley, but each parking lot costs 500 yen. This is the best place to take pictures of the spectacular views.

A short visit for us to the Hell Valley before going to our Ryokan. We came by coach, so not much of walking. However, it was quite cold and walking around was bit of challenge (slippery) during winter season.
The sulfur smell didn't bother me much and this place is good for panoramic photos.

We were there last December, basically the place is fully cover with snow. It is quite slippery, need to walk carefully on the walk path. My children like the place a lot, for Asian kids are usually very excited when they see snow.
It is also known as the "Hell Valley" because of its volcanic activity and sulfuric smell. The valley was filled with steam vents, boiling ponds, and bubbling mud pools that emitted a strong smell of sulfur.

Hey,
Is it very crowded now? Are there problems to park a car?
Thnx
Written 14 June 2019
It is not crowded in early morning and night. At night time, the tourists path is lit up beautifully and so peaceful to take night walk if you stayed nearby at night. It depends. There are big buses loaded with tourists and they occupy a lot of parking space. Also the nearby hotel is under renovation so their big buses use the parking lot space to turn around because their normal spaces were blocked off for renovation.

Daylight is short in winter. Go in between 10 am and 2 pm may be better. Not so cold.

May i know how many day for noboribetsu in winter time?
Written 10 October 2017
I stayed at Muroran and drove there. I think it is a better option. Your length of stay at Noboribetsu, Lake Toya and Muroran become very flexible.

HI, I plan to drive a rental car from Sapporo to Jigokudani and hike in 1wk of January
1. Is the park and trail open for public in 1st wk of January?
2. Will there be to much snow to drive safe and hike?
3. Is there a public parking lot I can park then hike?
Thanks for any comment.
Cheers
Thanks

Hi,
I will be staying at Noburibetsu Manseikaku hotel in winter. We are planning to see the hell valley, it is quite a distance from my hotel. Are there any bus shuttling/servicing around Noburibetsu that we can hop on and off?
Thanks
Written 9 October 2016
Yes there are also bus services that service Noboribetsu station to Jidai mura and also a terminal opposite the Grand Hotel which is also a 5 minute walk from the hell valley area.
Written 9 October 2016
how can i get there using public transportation from noboribetsu rail station,
Written 2 September 2016
There is a return bus service to Noboribetsu Station. After you visit Jikogudani you must walk to the bus terminal opposite the Grand Hotel. It is a fairly straight forward direction and roughly a 15 minute walk.
The bus from the station will also take you to that place on arrival.

What time does Jigokudani close in winter season (March 2016) and how long should we spend at this place?
Written 11 December 2015
Place gets dark after 5pm during winter. Probably should backtrack and plan your time from there. 40mins one-way track thru the forest trail + snap photos + refresh + walk out again (40mins) from the forest.
Written 15 December 2015
It is open air --haha, but don't go there when it is dark. There is no lighting!
