Neighbourhood: Downtown
Downtown Los Angeles is a busy metropolis of towering buildings, bustling streets, and industrial warehouses. There is a distinct multiplicity of cultures here with a growing influx of business professionals and hipsters. Many call the evolution of Downtown over recent years gentrification. New lofts, bars, hotels and restaurants are popping up regularly. Downtown is home to some of the very best restaurants in the city leading the LA foodie scene, plus it is the location of cultural and sports venues including the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Staples Center, and the Coliseum at the University of Southern California.

The first Los Angeles cathedral was destroyed in a 1994 earthquake: it was replaced by Our Lady of the Angeles in 2002. The new Cathedral is a masterwork of modern architecture. Our Lady of the Angeles is the center for over five million Catholic believers. The Cathedral is modernist construction that is widely admired.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels was completed in 2002, and even though it is cavernous with a striking, postmodern design, it still feels warm and inviting. The distinctive architecture features few right angles and includes the largest use of alabaster windows in the country.

There is plenty of traditional and contemporary sacred art throughout, and if you are able to attend mass, the choir and organ are wonderful. The campus also includes a lovely plaza as well as a cafe and gift shop. There is paid parking (free during masses), but it's also nearby the Civic Center subway station.

Even though it's very different from a traditional cathedral, Our Lady of the Angels is a grand and beautiful church worth a stop for its unique art and architecture.

We visited on Sunday morning when the street parking was free on an adjacent street. Its huge interior has an organ haning to the side of the altar. Restrooms downstairs at the entrance to the mausoleum which is extensive.
Great view for photo across the freeway to the towering high school; Ramon C Cortines School of Visual Arts

This was one of the items to see in my 100 Places to Pray book. It is a departure from traditional cathedrals and so very interesting. We loved the chapels along the side of the main church area.

I love visiting the Blessed Sacrament whenever I can. I enjoy browsing their Gift Shop. One time, I bought a luminous Rosary for 50 cents! I still have it to this day.

The grandeur walls are painted with images of saints, some of which I'm not familiar of.

The symbiosis of the church organ and the acoustics is heavenly.

Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels exudes the ambience of a solemn House of Prayer. It gentle ushers you into that aroma of holiness, and to that yearning to be a step closer to God every visit.
Downside: PARKING is EXPENSIVE (for me).

I am happy to have visited this modern Cathedral, a testimony to the mix of Christian heritage and contemporary architecture. The combination is appealing, yet calls for reflection. Much needed complement for the fast paced life of LA.

I used to have the view that all cathedrals were basically the same. Of course, that's not true. If you feel like I did, this magnificent modern building will change your mind. It's a mix of traditional and contemporary, with an emphasis on the latter.

I wish I'd read the reviews below before I went. I can see that missed a lot.

A pleasant surprise, I found the exterior unattractive but the interior is overpowering. Great expressions of religious art in a magnificent environment.
