The area
Neighbourhood: Downtown
Downtown Los Angeles is a busy metropolis of towering buildings, bustling streets, and industrial warehouses. There is a distinct multiplicity of cultures here with a growing influx of business professionals and hipsters. Many call the evolution of Downtown over recent years gentrification. New lofts, bars, hotels and restaurants are popping up regularly. Downtown is home to some of the very best restaurants in the city leading the LA foodie scene, plus it is the location of cultural and sports venues including the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Staples Center, and the Coliseum at the University of Southern California.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

If you're just on vacation and want to make DTLA your home base, you can't do a lot better. Great location, everyone knows where it is, great rooftop bar, great downstairs bar, close to transit, etc.
Rooms are super stylish, but not 100% ideal for business travel. For example: rooms have an iron and a small ironing board, but if you have anything serious to press, it's a challenge. Not a ton of storage, though the closet is great. Workspace is fine, but the gym really is not (there is a full 24 Hour Fitness across the street, though...)
Bottom line, it's a great spot and a fun place, but simply might be more suited for nights out on the town and days of lounging.

I stayed here on a business trip and was quite surprised by the room I was given. Quite unique, the bathroom shower was all glass and faced out into the rest of the room, so definitely don't stay here if you're at all modest. I got a great rate, so it was definitely worth the experience. One time I stayed there and was upgraded to the "wow" room, which included a huge room with a bathroom sized tub, a large foam foot, and other unique surprises. Definitely stay here if you're in for something different. The bar on the top is also quite popular and a cool experience.

My own impression before staying here was that it was a cool trendy place to stay. Whilst it may be cool to be seen here, it isn't to stay.
Rooms felt dated and tired, The beds are literally just a mattress (this is not an overreaction) on the floor, albeit on a slightly raised section of flooring. The TV was old and for a twin room with my teenage son, the whole wall length see through glass into the bathroom was highly inappropriate and impractical. I want to know when that would ever be a good idea in a shared room, there was a curtain, but it didn't really help with a light on behind!
Nothing felt high end at the hotel, may well be what they are going for, but don't expect anything luxurious. My school has softer toilet paper!!!
rooftop pool is more like a plunge pool (they are creative with the camera angle), its in the shade for half of the day, and kids aren't allowed after midday as its for 21+ a bit rubbish when you're a guest. Rooftop itself was nice, and the bar, just a shame I couldn't enjoy it with my son!
lifts are cool and in keeping with the art-deco style of the building, but not much else to add.
Valet is pointless, you can self park literally right in front of the hotel and also below for circa $20 overnight.

PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE! These people are racist and very selective on who they let in. I was discriminated based on the way I looked along with my 5 other friends. They claimed our "Illinois" ID's were "fake" but they didn't even have an ID scanner! Fernando Quinones (aka the manager, which I honestly think was not true) was extremely disrespectful and argued that our ID had discrepancies in their shapes, color and overall quality of ID. Fernando raised his voice at me and claimed he was also from Humboldt Park Chicago hence he can guaranteed our ID's were fake. To think that all six of us went out of our way to get "fake" ID's to come visit Los Angeles, CA and party at their rooftop is absolute narcissist, irrational and plain ignorant. Overall, please do not let anybody impede you from getting in unless they have a legit reason! CALL THE COPS next time!

The Standard Downtown is a great hotel option in Downtown LA. There's a lot to do at the hotel itself (eat/drink at the biergarten, lounge by the pool, eat at the 24 hour diner, get a haircut, play ping pong). If you want to explore the neighborhood there are also a lot of restaurant options within walking distance.
The rooms aren't fancy, but they're clean. If you want to avoid the party scene I suggest staying at the hotel early in the week, on a Monday or Tuesday night.

If you are 20 and want to party all night, this is the place for you. If you are looking for a place to sleep, forget it. Dance music from the clubs can be heard and felt in the room. Noisy guests arriving in the late hours.

We love to take people from out of town for one drink to this hip place before 7pm. After 7pm it's a hip 21 and over and 30 and under crowd. But before, it's not crowded and a cool place to see something unique about LA. Just weaving around the hotel to find the elevator to the roof top pool and bar is an experience. They have several large orange waterbeds, an endless pool and people full of LA "attitude". If you hang past dark, it's amazing with the glowing pool, lights and showing of old B movies on the building across the street. Everyone leaves saying...wow, I'll remember this place.

Rooms are beautiful decorated.
Front desk staff is beautiful, bar staff? Not so much, they need to switch em up imo.
Very cool hotel, not for the business people id say.. but for everyone else :)
Jessica at the front desk was fantastic, and helpful

Stayed 3 nights in The Standard Downtown LA because it was close to a meeting that I was attending. Don't be fooled by the "Ultra Modern/Hip Vibe" that you hear about in the other reviews. This place is old and dingy and needs updating. Just because they bought some cheap, modern looking, totally unusable furniture and through some funky paint on the walls, doesn't really classify it in my book as an upscale modern hotel. The service is horrible- they didn't clean our room for 2 of the 3 days (although did attempt to come on the 2nd day at 430pm). The location is not ideal for LA unless you are renting a car and plan on driving to some nicer areas. The hotel makes most of it's money off of the club scene at night (that you have to walk through to check in) and it's Rooftop Bar which was pretty cool at night, although a really weird crowd. You should also know that the party starts at 2pm on Sat & Sunday so if you are thinking about bringing your book to lay out at the tiny pool all day (with 10 chairs and no towels!) forget about it. The music starts pumping and the place fills with local freaks. The pro's- I thing the restaurant is really great there- food and service were top notch and not too pricey.

I thought I wasn't cool enough considering the whole scene and decore of the joint, but after a weekend's stay I felt very welcome and comfortable. Sure, there were some hassels with a velvet rope on Sat. night, but the spectacular rooftop bar and the fun to be had were worth the wait. I'm staying there again because downtown LA gets hotter every time I visit, and this hotel is by far the best I've seen during all my stays. Even the food on site is great...
