We went to this vineyard because it is owned by some distant cousins of a friend of ours. Even though it was not open for tasting on the day we went they still allowed us to taste. The brochure of Lake County said it was open for tasting daily. The brochure is out of date and they are only open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We went on a Wednesday and the tasting room manager was there and very graciously allowed us to come in and taste. Their wines are very good! We couldn't have been treated better.

The insanity of paying $15 to taste four or five overpriced wines in a corporate setting made this charming place seem a bargain @ $10. Lovely grounds, pleasant wines, relaxed tasting. Like the places south of here, there were very attractive picnic places outside. These had considerably better views than elsewhere but being at the top of the hill, a sharp breeze made enjoying the lovely view less charming than it might have been. Nice wines and not so aggressively overpriced as our general Napa/Sonoma experiences had been.

The winery sits on a hill with a grape arbor overlooking a peaceful lake. You can picnic there while tasting their very nice wines. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly and most helpful. If you are in the area or looking for a special place to taste wine and relaxing visit Langtry.

After nosing around Sonoma, Napa, and Alexander Valleys for a few days, we decided to drive north to Lake County to sample Langtry. We were attracted to the name, much as Judge Roy Bean was, and found that Lily had once owned some of the vineyard property. (Our drive from Calistoga to Langtry was about 40 minutes. Then from Langtry to Davis it was about 90.) And a beautiful property it is, with the tasting room and long, trellised picnic area high up overlooking the valley. Megan hosted us in the tasting room and offered up a nice selection of some usual suspects--Sauv Blanc and Cab-- and a few rarer ones--Petite Sirah, Petite Verdot, and Late Harvest Voignier, and more. She was a delight, informative without pretense, generous with her pours, and helpful in all ways. We liked them all, bought one of most, and picnicked there with Langtry's Guenoc SB. The wines come in two basic ranges, Guenoc and Langtry, with the latter being the premier. Prices are quite reasonable, and joining the wine club reduces them by 20% (with a commitment to takes at least two future club shipments of three bottles). In the summer, make the drive on a reasonably cool day, but even on a hot one, the tasting room will be cool and the picnic area pleasant.

We have been members of the Langtry Wine Club for 9 years now, and know their range very well. It has three groups, starting at the top are the Langtry wines (all grown on their estate), Try the Cab from the Tephra zone of the vineyard, it is one of the best that California can offer. The Guenoc Wines are $16~22 and are Lake County wines with usually a portion of Langtry grape. My fav is the Victorian Claret, followed closely by the Sav Blanc. They also have a lower priced entry level wine. Langtry have several musical events on Friday nights during summer. We been to a couple and they are great fun, these events a full family affairs, with the young kids making their own dances.
