Lotusland is considered to be one of the top 10 botanic gardens in the world. Situated in the foothills of Santa Barbara, California, this 37 acre botanical wonderland is home to more than 3,000 different types of plants from all around the world. The estate gardens were created by Madame Ganna Walska, who owned the property from 1941 until her death in 1984. Lotusland is home to several extraordinary plant collections and around each corner there is the unexpected - a surprise of unique garden design and plant species. The collections include rare cycads that are extinct in the wild, an unparaleled cactus garden, palms and euphorbias like most people have never seen. Additional gardens feature ferns, aloes, lotuses (bloom only in the summer months), water lilies and bromeliads. Lotusland horticulture philosophy is organic, using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Reservations are required to visit. Tours are Wednesday - Saturday at 10 AM and again at 1:30 PM. Open Mid February through Mid November.

Serenity and peace in a lush revolving wonderland. One landscape flows into another makes one feel that you are floating from garden to garden. As I am not a plant person, still marveled at the exotics and local varieties

The guided tour takes all around the grounds of Lotusland where the variety of plants dramatically varied from area to area. It is like nothing I've ever seen before.

It takes a little planning ahead to visit this remarkable garden, but it's definitely worth the effort! Lotusland is a magical place that is difficult to describe because there's not another place like it--such an amazing variety of plants and styles. Around each corner there's another stunning sight...and glancing behind you, the new perspective is as breathtaking! Clearly the garden... More

We almost bypassed this wonderful garden because of the $40 entrance fee. It would have been a big mistake. The beautifully manicured grounds are amazing, arranged into zones such as topiaries, desert plants, ferns, butterfly garden, etc. and some of the plants are very rare and found nowhere else. Although it was the wrong time of year to see the... More

Loved this garden. So much history, so much beauty and interest. Almost didn't go, so glad we opted to make this a stop during our visit to this city. You will not regret doing this. Book your reservation. Walk-ins not available.

Lotusland is the wonderful estate of a well-known opera singer who married very well (a number of times) , and developed the property into a fantasy of all kinds of exotic / mediterranean plants. So many varieties and the plants are huge specimens. The garden has numerous paths, water features, pools, all designed and decorated with a theatrical flair, showcasing... More

We had heard of Lotusland from many friends and finally got around to visiting. It is a very special place. Although the property is not huge, Mme Waska who designed the gardens created a space with totally different areas that you walk through one after the other. From the lawn in front of the main house into the cactus garden,... More

Impressive array of themed gardens spanning a number of micro climates...this docent led tour is not cheap, but was a highlight of our Santa Barbara trip. Tailored nicely to accommodate the pace of a somewhat wobbly octogenarian traveling companion 😌

Really enjoyed our visit and tour of Lotusland. Thought $45 per person was quite a lot of money for the tour but understand that the garden requires money for the upkeep. Access is only possible with a prebooked tour which was invaluable to give background and context. Unfortunately you can't wander around after the tour at your own leisure which... More
