Lotusland is considered to be one of the top 10 botanic gardens in the world. Situated in the foothills of Santa Barbara, California, this 37 acre botanical wonderland is home to more than 3,000 different types of plants from all around the world. The estate gardens were created by Madame Ganna Walska, who owned the property from 1941 until her death in 1984. Lotusland is home to several extraordinary plant collections and around each corner there is the unexpected - a surprise of unique garden design and plant species. The collections include rare cycads that are extinct in the wild, an unparaleled cactus garden, palms and euphorbias like most people have never seen. Additional gardens feature ferns, aloes, lotuses (bloom only in the summer months), water lilies and bromeliads. Lotusland horticulture philosophy is organic, using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Reservations are required to visit. Tours are Wednesday - Saturday at 10 AM and again at 1:30 PM. Open Mid February through Mid November.

If you love gardens, botany or just are intrigued by unusual personal histories, Lotusland should be on your MUST do list. I found out about the garden when Googling 'gardens in Santa Barbara'. The story about the last owner sounded fascinating & I was curious about the garden itself. I must admit, I thought twice about going, given reservations are... More

Lotus Land is more than a spectacular garden. It is an artistic experience utilizing plants, tile, stone, wrought iron, shells, and other creative elements. The various sections of the gardens are laid out beautifully and often fancifully and with a sense of whimsy. We went in the winter, not knowing what to expect. Even tho it wasn't in full bloom... The variety of flora is unbelievable and the grounds are spectacular. Well worth the visit. The only downside is that you must walk with your tour group, you can not explore by yourself or hang out in an area that you find particularly interesting. I think we would go back more often if we could just walk around on our... More

Matthew, We greatly appreciate your kind words and are pleased that you enjoyed your visit. Exploring the garden on your own is one of the many benefits of joining Lotusland as a member. With all of the recent rain, the garden is looking spectacular. Our opening day is Thursday, February 16. Please call 805.969.9990 for a reservation. More

As a former docent, I highly recommend getting early reservations to visit this unique and eclectic garden as it is a treasure trove of unique and rare plants. Lovingly tended and a MUST SEE in my opinion.

Lotusland was once a grand estate in Montecito but has fallen into disrepair over the years due to lack of funding. There is a non-profit that runs the place but they are apparently unable to raise the necessary funds to keep the place up the way it was meant to look when originally designed by Ganna Walska. Indeed, the three... More

Lotus Land is the former estate of a socialite and opera singer who had a thing for gardens and the money and land to make it happen. Her own tastes are reflected here with various themed sections and overall its fairly impressive. Unless you are a member it requires advance reservation for a guided walking tour (be in shape, bring... More

There are few superlatives that can begin to adequately capture the charm and beauty of this gardened estate. To call it merely a garden is not nearly enough a description. Rather than purchase two adult & one child admission tickets for a single visit, we opted for an annual Family Membership for only $15 more. (Next time we will upgrade... More

Serenity and peace in a lush revolving wonderland. One landscape flows into another makes one feel that you are floating from garden to garden. As I am not a plant person, still marveled at the exotics and local varieties

The guided tour takes all around the grounds of Lotusland where the variety of plants dramatically varied from area to area. It is like nothing I've ever seen before.

It takes a little planning ahead to visit this remarkable garden, but it's definitely worth the effort! Lotusland is a magical place that is difficult to describe because there's not another place like it--such an amazing variety of plants and styles. Around each corner there's another stunning sight...and glancing behind you, the new perspective is as breathtaking! Clearly the garden... More
