This place abounds in historical buildings in honor of our ancestors who fished, served and made other efforts to build this town originally. I liked walking through this on my way to Fisherman's Wharf.

Excellent local history, we elected to wait for the guided tour and to listen to the guide, who explained the area and how it was the beginning of the United States in California.

This is not a massive area so it doesn't take too much time to visit. Lots of interesting things to see (including - on the edge - California's First Theatre). The gardens in the park are really nice and well-kept. This is very close to Fisherman's Wharf, so it's a good one to visit at the same time.

The park is adjacent to downtown Monterey and the Fisherman Wharf. Quite a few historic buidings and good history of Monterey and early California. Definitely worth a visit when you are in the area.

The museums in the park are all excellent and tell the story of how Monterey was first settled and became the capitol of California under the Spanish and briefly the Americans. We found the museum staff to be very helpful and well read. If you want to get a feel for the lives of the early settlers then this is... More

This was not a great attraction, but taking the tour made it worthwhile. We took the $5 tour (only available on weekends) in mid-June. It started at the Pacific House Museum where we paid the tour fee and included going inside the Custom House and Casa del Oro plus seeing a few other buildings only from the outside. My favorite... An old building with a small exhibit of the outpost shop of days gone by. Interesting but nothing spectacular.

Behind the state historic museum is the most delightful, Spanish-themed courtyard and garden. it is rarely visited and so very peaceful and beautiful.
