Good collection of Japanese bonsai

The bonsais are very impressive. They are very detailed in terms of replicating the image of larger trees. It will take you some time to go through all of them.

I have been to the lake for years, but only discovered the garden few month ago. It's a nice garden with one area for bonsai exhibition. I believe it's heavily relies on volunteers to maintain it, thus, still has room to improve...

Garden is not well kept but it is like a forgotten hide away. Around the paths there are benches to rest and watch the birds. Not a fancy garden but a nice quiet walk. Forget you are in the city. Bring your friends and relax.

Small oasis from walk around Lake Merritt. Enjoyed the collections of Vireya Rhododendron in blooms. Beautiful paths through sections of succulent, palms, roses, Japanese garden, and a community garden. Wonderful place to sit and relax awhile.

This is an area near Lake Merritt in Oakland. It seems like they try to make it a nice place for locals, but it's a little sketchy around this area. You pay to park here, and then you can walk around Lake Merritt. It's too bad they can't keep the mentally ill from bugging people here, but it can be... More

I take breaks here during the work day, and occasionally on the week-ends. And truth be known, I have stooped and stretched to do a little volunteer work in the gardens. And this is a multitude of gardens - from the Master Gardeners test beds and community veggie beds, to the Bonsai garden; California natives and habitat for pollinators (see... More

Much thought was put into making this Asian influenced garden retreat a beautiful place in which to take a break.

October 2015 was the fourth annual Festival of the Lights, and the turnout had built so that thousands attended. I waited in line for 45 minutes to get in, and I had purchased a ticket in advance. The crowd was mostly very attractive young people in their 20's and 30's attending with friends and dates... many came over from San... More

I visited late summer. Gardens were in full bloom. Seating spaces were conducive to meditation, reading, resting. Very well laid out and even though there were several summer childrens groups visiting, their was not interference for a quiet walking visit.

I love this garden area in the middle of Lake Merritt. They have some beautiful displays and great classes on certain weekends.
