Spices, Salts, Teas and Herbs
Mar 2021
I have been waiting a few years to finally get my hands on a refill of the Jamaican Jerk seasoning. I love to cook and I noticed spices from some of the large manufacturers are stale and go stale very quickly. I had been looking for better quality spices. The variety of herbs, salts, and spices that Oaktown carries is amazing. I ordered some Moroccan and Cajun spices and was very happy that recipe cards were included in my mail-order. I can't wait to make some dishes.

Good selection of unusual and usual spices

Nothing like a good spice shop for us cooks and this is one of the best. Good selection and a very friendly and helpful staff. You'll spend a lot of time here, enjoying every minute.

Fabulous selection of spices
Mar 2019 • Friends
So many different spices! An enormous variety that would thrill any cook, or even novice cook! They also have a lovely selection of ready made items - I picked up a ginger shrub and some sweetened ginger over there. I loved the ambience of the place - feels like stepping into a different age.

Oaktown Spice is like the difference between Tahitian Vanilla and the random stuff in the market.

High Quality, internationally sourced spices, and culinary treasures.
Oaktown Spice staff know their stuff and will help you make that favorite recipe even more delicious by allowing you to buy your spices in smaller amounts more often. Yes, even dried spices need to be stored properly and replenished often. This is a great place to stop with friends and culinarians during the holiday season or anytime. Take a piece of a local Oakland business home with you. Just one of the many reasons the New York Times Travel section calls Oakland one of the top five cities to visit in America.

Fantastic Gifts for Home Cooks
Nov 2017 • Solo
The exceptionally high quality spices and herbs here are great for home use, and make terrific hostess, thank you or special occasion gifts for those who are a little more adventurous in the kitchen. Boxed gifts of blended spices come with recipe suggestions that make the experience even better. The staff here is highly knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

Fresh, fresh spices plus knowledgeable staff
Jun 2017
I love this place. I love going in and smelling whatever fresh spice they roasted or ground that day. I love the containers and that you can choose how much or how little spice you want to buy. I love that they sell soft, fresh flavored marshmallows (!) I love that they sell herbs and spices and flowers such as cut ginger and lavender and rose petals that you can bring home and make into an aromatic tisane. I feel lucky to live near here every time I visit.

The smells will suck you in!

Freshest scents that make you dream of lands and meals afar. Best source of herbs, salts, peppers, etc. So many spices that you've never heard of! They even have some hot chocolate made in Santa Cruz that you make with water! Great customer service!

A festival of fragrances

Firstly the spot is a store not an attraction. The owners have decorated the store as a vintage pharmacy. Very tasteful. Next is the complex array of spicy smells that float in the air. You'll find many choices of spice coming from all over the world. Very nice.

Spice Up Your LIfe
Jan 2015 • Friends
In tone, hue, and redolence, Oaktown is reminiscent, in miniature, of the spice markets in the great, covered souks of Aleppo (sadly destroyed in the war) and Damascus Syria, as well as Istanbul's Spice Bazaar. Located just across the street and a bit down from the Pergola on Lake Merritt, Oaktown offers what, to me, is an amazing selection of spices in a most inviting and aromatic setting. No longer do I have to ferret out exotic spices such as Grains of Paradise on the internet. Nor do I have to make my semiannual pilgrimage to Penzey's, while visiting family in Wisconsin. It's all here in my 'hood.

A great way to spend part of a Saturday would be to pop into Oaktown to snoop around and chat with the wonderful staff. Then have lunch at one of the many sidewalk restaurants on Grand Avenue or Lakeshore Avenue. Follow that with an amble through the lively Saturday farmer's market on the Splash Pad, across from the Grand Lake Theater and top it all of with a movie matinee at the Grand Lake. What could possibly be better than that?
